Happy Thanksgiving SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2015 VOLUME 9 NO. 47 SIERRA MADRE’S COMMUNITY PRAYER BREAKFAST Giving Thanks for Unity and Diversity From left to right: Pastor Shin Sangman, Siera Madre United Methodist Church, Rev. Alan Phillip, Mater Dolorosa Passionist Community, Mr. Joseph Angle, Temple Beth David, Patricia Woodland, Event Chairwoman, Mr. Steven Licata, Baha’i Faith, Deacon Mauel Valencia, St. Rita Catholic Church and Barbara Lampman, President, Sierra Madre Woman’s Club On Wednesday, the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club held its 41st Annual Prayer Breakfast in the historic Essick House. The event, attended by a crowd that filled every room of the house, was a mixture of Clergy, residents, city officials, city staff and guests. It was a wonderful gathering of the diverse population of Sierra Madre. The breakfast also marked the beginning of the holiday season for many. Guests were treated to a free breakfast served by members of the Woman’s Club included their famous special recipe quiche, an annual favorite. The Sierra Madre Woman’s Club, established as a voice for women in Sierra Madre in 1907. It’s purpose “is to promote charitable, civic and educational advancement and social activities.” For more information on SMWC, go to: https://www. facebook.com/SierraMadreWomansClub. The first sight that greets visitors and residents who stop by Sierra Madre City Hall is a graceful rotunda with a beautifully landscaped central garden graced by a lovely metal statue of a fisher boy. What they may overlook is a small plaque among the garden’s plantings announcing that the Sierra Madre Civic Club maintains the garden and indeed all the plantings in the rotunda. For over 25 years, members who join Civic Club’s Beautification Committee have been insuring that the rotunda is lovely and welcoming. Originally the committee decorated for holidays and placed greenery and flowers in the planters several times a year. They still decorate for holidays, but their civic pride has led to the creation of the striking area that we have today. Nearly 20 years ago the committee issued invitations to local artists to submit designs for a statue for the garden. The winner was David Williams of Arcadia whose “Iron Boy” calls to mind the children who take part in the Huck Finn Fishing Derby. When the committee decided they needed professional help with the garden, they approached civic-minded Sierra Madrean Mark Meahl, owner of Garden View Landscape, Nursery, & Pools. Mark designed the dry river bed, suggested plantings, donated the initial plantings, sent his crew to the site with dirt, rocks, and plants, and did the entire installation, including the statue, as a donation. Several months ago Civic Club’s Beautification Committee noticed that the wisteria vine covering the pergola of the rotunda was dead in some places and in desperate need of professional trimming. Committee members contacted another civic-minded Sierra Madrean, arborist Danny Osti. Danny and his crew spent two days cutting away the dead parts of the vine and professionally trimming it so that it again looks healthy and promises to reward us with lovely blossoms next spring. The Sierra Madre Civic Club is proud of the work of their Beautification Committee and grateful to those professionals who love our city as much as we do and are willing to donate materials and so many hours of labor for little recognition and very small fees. As in many of our other citywide endeavors, we’ve learned that it indeed does take a village. The Sierra Madre Civic Club is a civic and philanthropic organization. We meet the second Thursday of every month at 7:30 PM in the Hart Park House. You are welcome to join us to find out the fun ways we support special events in Sierra Madre and how we raise money to give back to the community.
