City to Hold Meeting over 
New Home Depot Site Plan

 Vice Mayor Gene Masuda has 
setup a meeting Wednesday 
night to discuss the future of 
the Avon property on Foothill 
Blvd after a number of people 
have raised concerns over the 
possibility of Home Depot 
opening at the site.

 “David Reyes, Director of 
Planning and Community 
Development and a consultant 
from Home Depot will make 
a presentation and will be 
available to address concerns 
and questions regarding the 
Home Depot possible site 
plan and intended operations,” 
according to an announcement 
sent out by Masuda.

 City Manager Steve Mermell 
confirmed that Home Depot is 
in talks with Avon to buy the 
353,000 square-foot facility at 
2940 E. Foothill Blvd. 

 “Home Depot is in a due 
diligence period, which means 
they may or may not buy the 
Avon site,” Mermell said. “If 
they acquire it, they will want 
to put a store there.”

 Mermell said he has already 
heard some unease about 
traffic. He said the meeting will 
surface some of those concerns 
although he cautioned that this 
is very early in the plan. 

 “There has not been a proposal 
submitted, we don’t know 
what’s being talked about, how 
big? How tall? Is other retail, 
restaurants?” he said.

 Mermell said he would like 
feedback on what residents 
want to see there.

 As for Avon leaving, Mermell 
said over the years, their 
business model changed, 
people’s tastes have changed 
and they have focused overseas 
and consolidated to a point that 
Avon has no choice but to leave 
Pasadena. Mermell said Avon 
has been great for the city. 
“By next summer they will be 
gone,” he said.

 The meeting will be 
Wednesday Nov. 30 from 7:00 
to 8:30 p.m. at Pasadena City 
College Foothill Campus and 
Community Education Center 
Multipurpose Room, 3035 East 
Foothill Blvd. (one block east 
of the Avon building) on the 
corner of Kinneloa and Foothill 
Blvd. Parking will be validated. 
Parking in Lot D. 

 Pasadena Police officers 
responded to an attempted 
murder on Nov. 20, at about 
8:10 a.m. in the 900 block 
of E. Maple Street. During 
the investigation, PPD 
officers learned the suspect, 
Alvarado Miranda, stabbed 
his wife several timed during 
domestic dispute. The victim 
was transported to a local 
area hospital for medical 
treatment. PPD officers are 
actively looking for Miranda 
a Hispanic Male, Pasadena 
Resident.

 Police Respond to ‘Shots 
Fired.’

 Pasadena Police officers 
investigated a call, on Nov. 19, 
at about 12:53 a.m., of shots 
fired in the area of El Molino 
Avenue and Mountain Street. 
PPD officers recovered 
evidence from the incident 
suggesting that shots were 
actually fired. No one was 
injured.

 Light rain did not deter 
parade goers Sunday for this 
year’s Occasional Doo Dah 
Parade —Known as the twisted 
sister of the conventional Rose 
Parade— as over 85 unique 
entries from zany drill teams, 
art cars and floats took over 
Colorado Boulevard, between 
Altadena Drive and San Gabriel 
Boulevard.

 Doo Dah Parade Spokesperson 
Patricia Hurley said it had not 
rained on the parade since 1993.

 “That was the year we [Light 
Bringer Project] started to 
think about taking over the 
operations of the parade,” 
Hurley joked. “That was also 
the year the parade circled city 
hall and Snotty Scotty & the 
Hankies played in the center of 
the circle.”

 This year’s parade was held 
in honor of Scott Finnell aka 
“Snotty Scotty” who passed 
away Oct. 16 from lung cancer. 
Members of Finnell’s family, 
including his mother, led 
Sunday’s parade. Finnell as 
Snotty Scotty & the Hankies 
had led every Doo Dah since 
the beginning. 

 Queen Ruby Chard, aka, Meg 
Cole presided over Doo Dah 
as she played in her band Ruby 
Chard and the Funguys. Cole 
has also been in every Doo Dah 
Parade going back to 1978 and 
was a good friend of Finnell.

"All agreed she was a most 
fitting choice for queen as we 
celebrate the life of John Scott 
Finnell,” organizers said.

 Longtime Altadena residents 
and owners of Hoopla! 
Emporium, an eclectic 
neighborhood boutique were 
Doo Dah Grand Marshals.

 Crowd favorites included, 
Flying Baby SeeSaw Acrobatics, 
Count Smokula, Chicken Boat 
Float-Route 66 Shooting Gallery 
Uncle Fester among others.

 Doo Dah Co-organizer Tom 
Coston honored the entrée 
Blues Brothers Tribute Doo 
Dah’s personal Czar Award.

 The parade ended with "Secret 
Santa," Doo Dah’s take on the 
North Pole icon.

 Police Looking for Man 
who Brandish Firearm

 Pasadena Police officers 
responded to the 300 block of 
North Mentor Avenue Nov. 17, 
at about 10:13 a.m., regarding 
someone brandishing a 
firearm. On arrival, officers 
talked to the victim who said 
his roommate had pointed 
a gun at him following a 
verbal argument. The victim 
described the suspect (male 
black adult) and provided 
other identifying information. 
The investigation is ongoing.

Tuesday.

 Giving Pawsday is the 
Humane Society’s version 
of Giving Tuesday, a 
global day of giving on the 
Tuesday after Black Friday 
and Cyber Monday. 

 Gifts will be used to help 
the animals that come to 
PHS in need of a warm, 
safe shelter, food and 
medical attention this 
holiday season. Animals 
that would have otherwise 
spent their holiday season 
on the streets hungry, cold 
and scared.

 Every year nearly 12,000 
animals come to PHS 
in need of food, shelter, 
medical care and so much 
more.

Mt. Everest Climber to Talk 
at Pasadena Senior Center

 Pasadena Police Special 
Enforcement officers 
completed a compliance 
check, Nov. 18, at a residence 
of a known gang member, 
near Raymond Avenue and 
Washington Boulevard. 

 During the check, officers 
recovered a loaded pistol. The 
offender was arrested.

 A local attorney will, next 
week, discuss his treacherous 
and thrilling experience of 
climbing Mt. Everest.

 Gary Nelson, a Glendale 
attorney, climbed Mt. 
Everest in May 2011. Using 
photos, video and his own 
brand of humor, Nelson 
will discuss his experience 
Thursday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. 
in the Scott Pavilion at the 
Pasadena Senior Center, 85 
E. Holly St. 

 Mt. Everest, the tallest 
mountain in the world, 
was first conquered by 
Sir Edmund Hillary in 
1953. Since then, many 
adventurers have completed 
the climb, others have been 
unsuccessful and nearly 
300 people have died in 
their attempts to reach 
the 29,029-foot summit in 
the Himalayan Mountain 
Range.

 The cost is $20 for members 
and non-members. Proceeds 
will benefit the Pasadena 
Senior Center. Dinner will 
be provided by El Portal 
along with a no-host beer 
and wine bar.

for young people to do. The 
crafts will highlight the holiday 
celebrations of cultures from 
around the globe. A special 
“Santa’s Village” display will 
also be available for viewing 
enjoyment and photos. Light 
refreshments will be served.
