$5 PANCAKE BREAKFAST AND POOCH PARADE TODAY! 7AM TO 11AM MEMORIAL PARK Page B1 SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 2016VOLUME 10 NO. 23SIERRA MADRE POLICE BLOTTER SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2016 VOLUME 10 NO. 38 SMPD PRESENTS INFORMATIVE ACTIVE SHOOTER WORKSHOP LET US NEVER FORGET It could happen in your backyard. That is the message that members of the Sierra Madre Police Department wanted to convey to residents who were in attendance at the Active Shooter Workshop recently held. As quiet as Sierra Madre is, one cannot rule out the possibility that the town may become victim to some unimaginable violent act and SMPD attempted to inform residents what to do should that happen here, at your job or anywhere. (SMPD Reserve Officer BenPalmer, left) The information provided was greatly appreciated, especially the fact that, according to one attendee, "....it didn't scare me to death". Joan and Emmet McGuire submitted the following to MVNews: "We are writing to inform the Sierra Madre Community about an extraordinary opportunity we had on Tuesday, September 6 – and that anyone else can also have. Provided by the Sierra Madre Police Department, it was a presentation on how to respond should you find yourself in an “active shooter” situation, such as we have seen on the news so often in recent times. For over ninety minutes, using video and live speakers, Officer Ben Palmer walked us through the details of a number of these violent scenarios that actually occurred over the last dozen years, and coached us in the safest and most effective possible ways to survive them. Basically, the choices of “Run – Hide – Fight” were examined and discussed in (frequently dramatic) detail. Officer Palmer is an extremely compelling and professional presenter; the audience responded to him enthusiastically with questions and comments, and the evening was thoroughly captivating as a result. Chief Giannone has promised that this presentation can be repeated any time sufficient demand for it arises, so…CALL HIM. For yourself and your family, you really don’t want to miss out on this. Thanks, and many thanks to the Sierra Madre Police Department." On Sunday, September 11, 2016, Sierra Madre’s First Responders - The Sierra Madre Police, Fire Departments, along with several residents honored the memory of those who lost their lives fifteen years ago. Led by SMPD Public Safety Director - Police Chief Larry Giannone and SMFD Chief Steve Heydorff, silence was observed and all officers stood at attention as the Verdugo Emergency System commemorated the precise time when the last World Trade Center collasped. The following Tuesday, the Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club held a luncheon for members of SMPD, SMFD,SM Paramedics, CERT in appreciation for their willingness to put their lives on the line in order to save lives and preserve the quality of life in Sierra Madre. The VFW 3208 was also thanked for their past service at the luncheon.
