Kicking off this fresh new school year brings some fresh faces to the student
counsel of Bethany Christian School. Unlike traditional student counsels
at other school, these captains and co-captains each govern their own
quarter of the middle school population. Based off the Old-English House
system all the middle school students of BCS are divided into 4 houses,
which throughout the year participate in weekly student led meetings,
various school responsibilities, house competitions, and community service
projects.

We are proud to present those that are picking up the lead for the 4 houses:
Faith Peterson and Emily Banuelos for the Aequitas House, Christian Mays
and Cate Crabb in the Fidelitas House, Saundri Luippold and Tianna Smith
in the Integritas House, and Zoe Maros and Ellie Cucullu in the Veritas
House. Providing our middle school students intentional opportunities and
training in developing leadership skills will benefit them for life.

Bethany Christian School was founded in 1976 in Sierra Madre as a ministry
of Bethany Church. Our mission is to partner with parents to educate,
develop, and nurture students from preschool to 8th grade for a life of
Christ-centered excellence in academics Christian character, and servant
leadership. BCS is a dual accredited school with the Association of Christian
Schools International and Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

ALVERNO HEIGHTS ACADEMY’S VOLLEYBALL AND

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS GET A “BLESSED” START

Volleyball and Cross Country teams had their jersey blessed during “Blessing of the Jerseys”

As they prepare for their official league seasons to get underway, the Alverno
Heights Academy Volleyball and Cross Country teams had their jerseys
blessed as a part of the annual “Blessing of the Jerseys” on Tuesday morning.

The prayer service was organized by Alverno Heights Academy’s Campus
Ministry team and Campus Minister, Ms. Katharine Guerrero. At the
beginning of the prayer service, Alverno’s Secretary of Christian Service
Ally Mercado ’18 welcomed the entire school community and explained the
purpose of “Blessing of the Jerseys” and encouraged the Alverno community
to come out and support the Jaguars during the fall season.

Each team then brought up their jerseys to be blessed for a successful
season filled with great competition, sportsmanship, and of course, one free
of injuries. Both teams also received a small reminder of their promise and
commitment to their teams that they could to attach to their athletic bags.

“Blessing of the Jerseys is such a wonderful way for these teams to begin
their Horizon League seasons,” said Julia V. Fanara, Head of School.
“The level of commitment and dedication these young women display is
a testament not only to their athletic interests but also their dedication to
Alverno. We are so proud of them and the way they truly act as empowered
women on and off the field and court. We look forward to another successful
year of Alverno Athletics. Go Jaguars!”

The Jaguar Cross Country team will run in their first race of the season on
Wednesday, September 14 at Elysian Park in Los Angeles at 4:00 p.m. They
will be competing against the Sacred Heart High School Comets.

The Jaguar Volleyball teams will play in their first League games on
Tuesday, September 20 at 4:00 p.m. at Salesian High School in Los Angeles.
They will also be competing against the Sacred Heart High School Comets.

About Alverno Heights Academy

Alverno Heights Academy is an all-girls, independent, progressive
Catholic, college preparatory school dedicated to its mission of
empowering each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to
be. Located on the property of the former Barlow Estate in Sierra Madre,
California, Alverno Heights Academy was founded in 1960 by the Sisters of
St. Francis who sought to create an environment in the San Gabriel Valley
where young women could become informed and knowledgeable persons.
Later renamed Alverno High School and sponsored by the Immaculate
Heart Community, Alverno’s program—academic, spiritual, aesthetic,
social, and physical—has been shaped by the staff, trustees, and students.
As Alverno Heights Academy once again, the school remains committed
to its mission by encouraging each of their young women to be who they
imagine. For more information about Alverno Heights Academy, please

RETIRED TEACHERS TO HEAR ABOUT JPL’S “ROCKET GIRLS”

The California Retired Teachers’
Association #71 (CalRTA-SGV) will
soon have the pleasure of hearing
from a computer. No, this computer
is not an electronic device. Instead,
it is one of Jet Propulsion Lab’s
“human computers!” There was a
time, beginning with World War II,
that JPL hired women scientists to
compute data that was used to chart
the paths for NASA’s early space
missions.

 Arcadia resident Sylvia Miller, one
of JPL’s last “human computers,” will
tell the Retired Teachers about her
experience as one of JPL’s “Rocket
Girls,” so named by the author
Nathalia Holt in her recent book “The
Rise of the Rocket Girls.” Sylvia Miller,
along with other brilliant “human
computers,” used pencil-and-paper
computations (no electronic devices
then) to help further NASA’s space
program. Holt’s book brings JPL’s
Rocket Girls out of obscurity and into
the public eye by revealing the role
women scientists played in advancing
space exploration.

 CalRTA #71 will welcome “Rocket
Girl” Sylvia Miller to its luncheon
meeting on Friday, October 14,
at 11:30 a.m. at the Senior Center
Building in Arcadia Park (county
park), 405 W. Santa Anita Avenue,
Arcadia, next to the Lawn Bowling
Greens. Guests are welcome to
come enjoy the luncheon and to
hear Miller’s lively presentation.
As an alternative to the hot meal, a
tuna salad is also available. The cost
of the luncheon for members and
guests is $12. Season tickets for the
year’s five lunches are available at
the discounted price of $55 instead
of $60, if purchased separately. For
luncheon reservations, please call
John Gera at (626) 286-0714 by the
October 7 deadline.

 Membership in the California
Retired Teachers’ Association is
open to all retired educators, as
well as to any others interested in
joining this active group, which
now numbers over 500 members in
CalRTA #71, the San Gabriel Valley
Division. CalRTA’s motto is “Your
Partner in Pension Protection.”

Arcadia resident Sylvia Miller will
tell CalRTA #71 (Retired Teachers)
about her years as a “computer”
with JPL.

27 ARCADIA HIGH STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL

MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS

ARCADIA-- A remarkable 27
students from Arcadia High School
have been named National Merit
Scholarship Semifinalists. This
prestigious recognition represents
less than one percent of high
school seniors in the United States.
The semifinalists will have an
opportunity to compete for roughly
7,500 National Merit Scholarships
worth about $33 million.

“Going into the test, I wasn’t sure
what to expect, because the class
of 2017 was the first to take the
redesigned PSAT/NMSQT,” said
Arcadia High Senior Simone Chu.
“I’m really glad that the education
I’ve received in AUSD prepared
me for anything and everything
that might come my way--and
I’m ecstatic to have been named a
National Merit Semifinalist! The
long wait for results was nerve-
wracking, but finding out that the
work I put in had paid off made it all
worthwhile.”

 Approximately 1.6 million
juniors in more than 22,000 high
schools entered the 2017 National
Merit Scholarship Program by
taking the 2015 Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT),
which served as an initial
screening of applicants. Of the
16,000 semifinalists named, about
15,000 are expected to advance to
the finalist level. Last year all 15
Arcadia High School semifinalists
were named finalists. In 2014
all 31 Apaches who were named
semifinalists were also named
finalists. The same trend occurred
in 2013 with the 22 Arcadia High
students who were recognized.

“This is always such an exciting
and distinguished honor for our
students,” said Dr. David Vannasdall,
Superintendent of Arcadia Unified
School District. “It also speaks
volumes to the quality of teachers we
are fortunate to have throughout the
entire district.”

 To become a finalist, the
semifinalists and their high schools
must submit a detailed scholarship
application, in which they provide
information about the semifinalist’s
academic record, participation in
school and community activities,
demonstrated leadership abilities,
employment, honors and awards
received, and satisfy other academic
criteria.

More than half of the finalists
will be awarded a National Merit
Scholarship, earning the Merit
Scholar distinction. In February
the finalists will be notified, and
scholarships will be awarded starting
in April and concluding in July.
