SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 2016VOLUME 10 NO. 23SIERRA MADRE POLICE BLOTTER SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 2016 VOLUME 10 NO. 35 SIERRA MADRE'S BELOVED LAURIE COOPER DIES Laurie Cooper, 98, passed away peacefully last week and Sierra Madre lost one of its well known Treasures. Laurie and husband Dick came to Sierra Madre in the late 1940's and built one of the first homes in the new tract at Laurel & Canon. From that moment on Laurie actively participated in her new community and continued until the challenges of aging caught up with her. She was one of Sierra Madre Environmental Action Committee's (SMEAC) earliest members and a leader and active participant throughout the organization's 45-year plus history. She was notably active in the creation and continual stewardship of Bailey Canyon Wilderness Park and a volunteer docent for SMEAC's Nature Awareness program in the schools. She also served as president for 12 years. Laurie spent countless hours speaking with thoughtful consideration to the City Council, City Commissions, and other community groups on behalf of issues she felt impacted the health, beauty, and responsible operation of our community. She was a stalwart proponent of collaboration between citizen groups and city government and was a true role model epitomizing what makes a caring, responsible, and ACTIVE citizen. She was also a lifelong member of the League of Women Voters and through that organization promoted educated citizen participation in the voting process so crucial to democratic governing. On her 97th birthday she was chosen as Sierra Madre's Older American Of The Year. Laurie was preceded in death by her husband Dick and is survived by her daughter Deborah. Services are pending.
