SIERRA MADRE HONORS AWARDS - CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

“The first week of August hangs at the very top
of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the
highest seat of a Ferris-wheel when it pauses in
its turning. The weeks that come before are only
a climb from balmy spring and those that follow,
a drop to the chill of autumn. But the first week
of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously
silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring
noons and sunsets smeared with too much color.”
Natalie Babbitt Tuck Everlasting

I’ve got those summer cold blues!

I’m wheezin’, sneezin’, coughin’ all day long,

And then all night it’s the same dull song.

My walking shoes are sitting on the washer, so
forlorn,

And I’m watching the Olympics, starting early
morn.

Today at 6 a.m. it’s field hockey with the girls,

Then rowing, swimming, fencing, qualifying
heats,

And we’ve got absolutely nothing in the house
that’s good to eat.

I’ve got those summer cold blues!

I’m wheezin’, sneezin’, coughin’ all day long,

And then all night it’s the same dull song.

Michael Phelps is taking gold, and so is swimming
Katie.

Chinese synchronized divers, and darling Simone
Biles,

Beach volleyball and tennis, I slept through most
of those.

The women’s bike road race, where Mara Abbott
should of won,

Was a scary thing to watch, with bikes crashing
all along the run.

I’ve got those summer cold blues!

I’m wheezin’, sneezin’, coughin’ all day long,

And then all night it’s the same dull song.

I’ve taken Day and NyQuil and still my throat is
sore,

And my favorite walking buddy thinks I’m a
crashing bore.

Tonight we get more swimming,

And – Oh good! – Some more gymnastics.

And I’m hoping tomorrow I’ll be up feeling
fantastic.

I’m convinced my summer cold is a direct result
of airplane travel coming home from Texas. There
are two schools of thought on this and I’m in the
camp of the believers. If you’ve got a summer
cold, you have my sympathy. The only thing that
has appealed to me at all is watermelon. I did cook
some salmon, which was delicious and easy. Try
this: Take two salmon filets, rinse and pat them
dry. Set them on a plate and dust them with our
own Sierra Madre Grocery Company’s Sierra
Seasoning Rub. Put enough olive oil in a skillet to
coat it, heat it to a medium hot, add your salmon
face side down (skin side up) so it will get a nice
color, turn the heat down and cover the skillet.
Keep an eye on your salmon as it cooks quickly.
Uncover it after a couple of minutes and turn it
over, skin side down. Then re-cover it for a few
more minutes till a peek at the middle of the filet
shows it’s cooked through. Serve with a salad or a
veggie and you’re all set. Let someone else clean
up.

Discovered last week that the rubber mulch I
bought at Home Depot, which was guaranteed to
last for at least ten years has been overheating my
plants. Sigh... the wood chip mulch is fine, but,
apparently, the rubber mulch heats up the entire
world wherever you put it. My yard maintenance
professional, Gerardo Jimenez, very gently told
me that the rubber mulch was the cause of my
crepe myrtle being the only one in Sierra Madre
or Wylie, Texas, that didn’t look beautiful. It’s
cooler this week, I know my summer cold blues
will go away and maybe my crepe myrtle will
bloom yet this season.

ADVISORY: CALTRANS TO WORK ON

210 FREEWAY THIS WEEKEND IN PASADENA.
EXPECT DELAYS AND DETOURS!

PASADENA, Calif.—All lanes of the eastbound
I-210 between Mountain Street and Lake Avenue
in Pasadena will be closed twice in August, for
34 hours each time, by Caltrans for pavement
rehabilitation work. The eastbound I-210 connector
lanes to the westbound SR-134 freeway also will be
closed, along with the eastbound I-210 on-ramps for
Lincoln Avenue and Mountain Street.

Although the I-210 might be closed, remember
that Pasadena is open for business! Our shops,
restaurants, movie theaters, art museums and
galleries, parks and fun community activities like
the Rose Bowl Flea Market, held this Sunday, Aug.
14, welcomes you!

For more information about the Caltrans district
in charge of the closures, go online to http://www.
dot.ca.gov/d7/index.php. Search for updates on the
closures via social media with the #RoseJam hashtag
or directly from Caltrans at https://twitter.com/
CaltransDist7 @CaltransDist7.

Rose Bowl Flea Market info is online at: http://
www.rosebowlstadium.com/events/flea-market.
The 34-hour weekend closures will occur:
• 7 p.m., Saturday, August 13, 2016
until 5 a.m., Monday, August 15
• 7 p.m., Saturday, August 27, 2016 until 5 a.m.,
Monday, August 29

Caltrans officials emphasized that all lanes of
eastbound I-210 will be closed in the construction
area. Motorists who want to get through on
the eastbound I-210 will have to use detours.
There will be a number of detours posted with
the main one being the eastbound I-210 to the
southbound SR-2 to the eastbound SR-134.
Motorists are urged to use caution and to “Be
Work Zone Alert” should expect delays and are
strongly advised to plan ahead, use alternate routes,
avoid the area or use public transit. Additionally,
motorists can check traffic conditions before
they leave by calling 511 or visiting the Caltrans
Quickmap at http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/.
The I-210 is a major th oroughfare, serving
commuters between Los Angeles and San
Bernardino counties. As a result of heavy use, the
road has experienced extensive wear. The closures
are part of a $148.5 million pavement rehabilitation
project of the I-210 passing through the cities of
Glendale, La Cañada-Flintridge and Pasadena.
