Last night at the Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte
Town Council Meeting, Lucy Nicoloro was sworn
in by Kathryn Barger to fill-in the position vacated
when Lucy’s late husband John passed away.
Kathryn, Supervisor Mike Antonovich’s Chief of
Staff for twenty-five years, has been endorsed to fill
in his seat when he leaves office next year. Kathryn
was an intern, and the health and children’s services
deputy, before becoming Chief of Staff. The big plus is
all her knowledge and experience from those twenty-
five years. She’d enter office with no need of on-job
training. I was a founding member of the Town
Council and was on it ten years. I have two huge
binders of correspondence with the Supervisor and
the county agencies that addressed various issues. All
this knowledge Kathryn already has and she’s dealt
with all the various agencies during her twenty-five
years under Antonovich.
After Lucy was sworn in by Kathryn, it was
“business” as usual. First the two County Deputies
introduced themselves and spoke of the various
problems. There has been a spike in burglaries and
larcenies. People were advised to LOCK THEIR
CARS and report ANYTHING UNUSUAL/
UNFAMILIAR! This is OUTRAGEOUS! These
perpetrators actually RENT high end cars like
Porsches to fool people when they stake out the
neighborhoods. They knock on the doors and
pretend to be selling something. If no one answers,
one goes around back and breaks in through sliding
doors!
Deputy Art Valenzuela gave an update of the
wonderful youth activities at Pamela Park. We also
got reports from both the Live Oak and Duarte
Libraries on upcoming events/programs. (Please
visit their websites for more info.) Field Deputy
Brian Mejia reminded us of the upcoming meeting
at Pamela Park Wed, Feb 17, 7:00-8:30 pm to discuss
hat programs, etc. you would like. This is fantastic
and is being done for ALL LA COUNTY PARKS!
(Visit www.LAcountyParkNeeds.org for more info).
Special Thanks to Carol Wong Quan from the
LA County Assessor’s Office for a most informative
presentation. Our Assessor is Jeffrey Prang, (213)
974-3211 or 1-888-807-2111. His four primary
responsibilities include: Locate all taxable property
and establish ownership; Establish a taxable value for
all property subject to property taxation; Complete
assessment roll showing the assessed values of all
property; and Apply all legal exemptions.
Did you know that County Assessor Jeffrey
Prang and the LA County Board of Supervisors
proclaimed January as Homeowners Exemption
Awareness Month? There ARE property tax savings
available for homeowners. It’s estimated that nearly
400,000 homeowners have yet to take advantage of
the Homeowners’ Exemption. For the Homeowners’
Exemption application form, click

county areas to attend these council meetings. There
is SO MUCH information given out Next meeting-

LOCAL SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS TO SPEAK
AT RETIRED TEACHERS’ MEETING
At the invitation of the California Retired
Teachers’ Association-SGV Div. #71 (CalRTA),
four superintendents from school districts in the
CalRTA #71 division will be guest speakers at
the retirees’ luncheon meeting. This will be an
informal, cordial event at which the administrators
can share their school districts’ highlights, tell of
any long-range facilities projects, describe their
goals for student success, and much more. To
show their appreciation for the administrators’
dedication to education, CalRTA #71 will give
memberships to them.
The superintendents in attendance will be Dr.
Irella S. Perez, El Monte Union High School District;
Kathy Perini, Temple City USD; and Dr. Mary
Labrucherie, Valle Lindo (South El Monte) SD.
Dr. Mary Labrucherie has already been a CalRTA
#71 member for several years. Asst. Supt. Gary
Gonzales of Alhambra USD will also be present.
The superintendents will be seated at different tables
(look for their signs!) to enable them to visit with
members during the lunch, particularly those who
had taught in their districts.
The CalRTA #71 luncheon meeting will take
place on Friday, February 12, at 11:30 a.m. at the
Senior Center Building in Arcadia Park (county
park), 405 W. Santa Anita Ave., Arcadia, next to
the Lawn Bowling Greens. Guests are welcome
to come enjoy the luncheon and to hear from
the superintendents. The cost of the luncheon
for members and guests is $12. For luncheon
reservations, please call John Gera at (626) 286-0714
by the February 5 deadline.
Membership in the California Retired Teachers’
Association is open to all retired educators, as well as
to current educators, and to any others interested in
joining this active group. CalRTA’s motto remains
“Your Partner in Pension Protection.”
