in light of the world for which the students are being educated.

ST. RITA CELEBRATES CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Sierra Madre, CA – Students at St. Rita School will celebrate National
Catholic Schools Week, January 31-February 5, 2016, with a daily
line-up of fun activities on campus and community outreach projects
designed to honor the Sierra Madre organizations that make our
town so unique and special.
The week kicks off with students and their families “packing the
church” at the 10 o’clock Mass on Sunday, January 31, followed by a
school-wide open house from 11:00 am-1:00 pm in which current and
prospective families can tour the classrooms, view student artwork on
display and have coffee and donuts while marveling at exhibits in the
students’ Science Fair.
In the school week following, students will enjoy a kickball
tournament, a pep rally to celebrate school spirit, and participate in
a “souper bowl” where students bring a can of soup to be donated
and wear their favorite team jersey. Classes also compete in a “Penny
Crusade” to raise funds for the thousands of homeless men, women
and children in the San Gabriel Valley served by Catholic Charities.
The Transitional Kindergarten through 8th Grade classrooms
will work on a community “thank-you” project to recognize those
at the Fire Department, Library, Post Office, Parks and Recreation
Department, CLIMB, the Chamber, Women’s Club, Senior Center
and City Hall.
The week’s highlight will be a mass celebrated by Bishop O’Connell
on Tuesday, February 2nd at 8:00am. The Most Reverend David G.
O’Connell is the Episcopal Vicar of the San Gabriel Pastoral Region,
one of the five Pastoral Regions in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. In
his pastoral ministry, Bishop O’Connell has always been very active
in serving those in need. St. Rita invites the parish and community to
attend.
St. Rita is a top-ranked Catholic parish school, located at 322 N.
Baldwin Ave. in Sierra Madre, which focuses on faith, stewardship
and academic excellence. Visit www.st-ritaschool.org for more
information. Applications are currently being accepted, and school
tours are available by appointment.
AHS SENIOR TO COMPETE IN THE ‘NOBEL PRIZE
FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’
Arcadia High senior George Hou was
named one of 300 semifinalist in the
country, and now he is one of just 40
finalists nationally for the prestigious 75th
annual Intel Science Talent Search.
Each of the finalists receives $7,500.
Ten of the finalists were from California,
which in recent years has emerged as
a science powerhouse, competing with
longer-established competitive schools on
the East Coast.
The competition selects students based
on their scientific research and on the
potential they show as future scientific
leaders. In March they will undergo final
judging in Washington, D.C., where
they will publicly display their work and
meet with notable scientists. Three first-
place prizes, worth $150,000 each, will be
awarded, along with second- and third-
place prizes.
Hou’s project involves Separating Mixed
Signals in Noise-Polluted Environments
Using Global Optimization
This competition is acclaimed as the
nation’s most
prestigious
pre-college
science
competition, and what some call the “Nobel Prize for high school students.”
The contest is run by the Society for Science & the Public for its sponsor, the Intel Corporation.
