GPS HELPS TRACK YER
TRACKER
Happy Tails
by Chris Leclerc
Some dogs just love to venture beyond the perimeters of
their own back yards, and for obvious reasons when they
do get out, it causes great concern on the owner’s part for
their safety and timely return. I, myself have had dogs that
liked to roam, and I remember it being a real challenge to
keep them in. They seemed bound and determined to go
out on their own; watching and waiting for a chance to
sneak through a door or gate inadvertently left unlatched,
even if for only seconds, by an unwitting child or visitor in
my home.
In my experience having dogs with wanderlust, I remember
going into “search mode” immediately upon discovery that
my dog was missing. I’d put up posters all around town. I’d
gather friends and relatives to help me search on foot and by
car. We’d canvass the neighborhoods hoping to find my dog
before he was hit by a car or otherwise harmed.
These days we have the social media for networking and
sharing information instantaneously in an endeavor to bring
home a wayward woofer. There are even services available
with staff on hand to do the foot work for you. All of these
seek techniques are great and can be very effective, but now
technological advances are making it even more convenient
and efficient for a fretting pet owner to locate a roving
runaway.
In our new millennium, GPS (Global Positioning Systems)
technology plays a part in just about every aspect of our daily
lives, whether it be in a cell phone, automobile, recreational or
fitness device, home security system, the list is endless. Long
gone are the days when GPS technology was used strictly for
boating, air travel, meteorology or military. Micro-mobile
GPS is now found in consumer products for just about every
need or occasion, including micro-chips and tags designed to
help ensure the exact, real time whereabouts of our darling
dogs.
The use of GPS devices for the purpose of pet
tracking is not necessarily a new concept. The
idea has been around for a while, but much like
other tech toys we’ve come to expect to find on the
shelf today, the variety of features and selections
has broadened to accommodate just about any
particularity or preference that may exist among
today‘s pet-pampering purchaser.
Having had a few clients recently ask me
about pet tracking devices , I decided to do a little
research and share what I found in this week‘s
column. Credit goes to the wiki.ezvid.com website
for this list of Top 8 Pet Trackers, 2016.
#1: Marco Polo - a completely self contained
pet tracking, monitoring and location system
designed to work anywhere. It has the ability to track up to 3
animals simultaneously, and is a good choice for the farm or
for traveling.
#2: Tractive GPS Pet Tracker - easily clips onto your pet’s
existing collar and will send alerts to your smartphone as soon
as your furry friend leaves a predestinated safe zone. Set it,
forget it, and let your pet roam.
#3: Loc8tor Pet Handheld Finder offers a tracking range of
up to 400 feet. Its dual directional technology system provides
visual and audio clues to guide you to your pet. An alert
sounds if an animal leaves preset boundaries.
#4: ElectroFlip PeTrack runs on a rechargeable lithium-
polymer battery that lasts up to a full week when GPS is
enabled and up to 30 days in standby mode. It’s great for
keeping tabs when a trip takes you away from your dog.
#5: Tagg Pet GPS Plus delivers on-demand text and/or
e-mail notifications complete with maps that will help you
find your pet. When you use the precision of a GPS location
tracking system, you can find Fido anywhere in the USA.
#6: Cat Caller Pet Tracker is ideal for both felines and
smaller dogs. Its wireless frequency transmit’s a signal through
walls, closets and other tight spaces where pets may hide. Any
pet that can wear a collar can use this caller.
#7: Pawscout Smart Tag is affordable and reliable. It hooks
onto a collar and connects you to your pet within a 200-foot
radius via smartphone app. The tag also has a link to a detailed
digital profile of your pet, including contact information.
#8: Girafus Pro-Track-Tor pet safety tracker relies on RF,
or radio frequency technology to track your cat or dog. When
you have a clear line of sight, the device can detect a signal
from as far as 1,600 feet away.
I hope this information will be practical and useful in your
search for the best way to “track yer tracker“, or in other words,
seek out your lost pup. Good luck!

HIGHS – “Dazzle Camouflage”
By Sean Kayden
Canada’s HIGHS show off flair and slick
productions on their sweeping alt-pop debut,
“Dazzle Camouflage.” The band, which consists
of Doug Haynes, Karrie Douglas, Joel Harrower,
Paul Vroom, and Liam Cole have crafted the first
true summer album of 2016. “Dazzle Camouflage”
marks the follow-up to the band’s 2014 self-titled
EP and a new venture into darker overtones. The
record is abundantly filled with imagery, bold
colors, and paints a vivid landscape. The range of
the album touches upon indie-pop, folk-pop, and
dream-pop. Yes, the music here essentially has a
pop resonance, but it’s far more than that. The
debut is dazzlingly melodic with a vibrancy that’s
unrivaled by most albums thus far this year.
There’s tons of exquisiteness to find and explore
as HIGHS have truly constructed something
unequivocally memorable. With dual vocalists,
Haynes and Douglas’ juxtaposition adds much
depth and variety. “Dazzle Camouflage” is the
path you want to set yourself upon as what you
will see and feel is much superior than the roads
others have traveled on.
“I Do, Do You?” kicks off the LP beautifully.
A mixture Of Monsters and Men and Local
Natives, the instantly affable track is completely
addictive. The summer vibes, the “ah, ah, ahs”
in the chorus, and the lilt vocals from Haynes
just come together flawlessly. “Closetalkers”
starts with this spacey sound before it turns into
something undeniably compelling. The dreamy
composition blends numerous sounds and this
soothing feeling consumes the listener. HIGHS
are perfectionists at creating consoling sounds
that are difficult not to be utterly enamored
by. This is pitch-perfect indie-pop that can’t
nor shouldn’t be ignored. “Portugal” hits every
note as it sinks into your soul. HIGHS have a
penchant for performing tropical-pop sounds
and it’s aggressively addicting to be listening on
the other end of it. The quintet’s direction here
is very straightforward, however, it’s much richer
than I anticipated. Generally, bands that fall into
this category don’t have much to offer that’s all
that different from their peers. However, HIGHS
cut deep with thematic imagery, passionate
songwriting, and captivating arrangements.

Review By: Sean Kayden
The record has an Interlude track and the
second half of the record feels a bit darker than the
first half, but in a welcoming way. The sounds off
“So Sad, Never Mad” remind me of Foals, which
shouldn’t surprise as Luke Smith (Foals, Depeche
Mode) produced the record. The track has sharp
guitar riffs and a persuasive baseline. Haynes’
vocals seem heavier and the chorus shows off
Douglas’ vocal chops that bring lightness to the
track. The two together work magically and with
each passing song, it feels like this record was
heaven sent. Douglas provides lead vocals on
“Acting Strange” and at first seems jarring being
used to Haynes’ style, but then as you settle in, you
realize this is one of the best tracks off the album.
She demonstrates much strength, boastfulness,
and conviction. I wouldn’t have mind to hear a
few more tracks led by her as well. Haynes does
make a vocal appearance here toward the end and
it simply adds more delightfulness to the song.
The finale comes in the shape of “Gold Teeth.”
The pensive structure of the song works superbly
well as HIGHS once again show off instrumental
prowess in the final stretch of the song. It will
leave the listener enthusiastically satisfied with
not only the end of the track, but as a conclusion
to this brilliantly accomplished record. I may be
sounding gleeful but “Dazzle Camouflage” is an
amazing record that will probably go down as
one of the best-hidden gems of 2016.
LOOKING FOR A BEST FRIEND?
Caesar
Caesar is a white and brown tiger-striped domestic
short hair who is certainly hard to miss! At 8-years-
old and 14 pounds, he’s a calm and social male who
commands attention with his welcoming meows and
friendly yellow eyes.
Caesar arrived at the San Gabriel
Valley Humane Society from Temple
City on March 29, 2016 when his owner
reluctantly had to surrender him due to
health reasons. As an experienced pet and
family member, Caesar would make a
great addition to any home where he can
continue to share his love and affection,
both of which are in no short supply with
this cuddly, handsome guy!
Caesar is fond of curling up in
cardboard boxes and sprawling across
the lap of an adoring human. He’s
generous with his gentle head butts and
loves to be petted as he circles around, rubbing up
against volunteers and staff at the shelter who can’t
help but lavish him with attention. He also seems to get
along well with other cats and would be comfortable in
a home with both children and adults, as well as another
cat or dog.
Caesar is playful, talkative, and laid-back. As an adult,
Caesar is low maintenance and keeps his short fur coat
clean and soft. If you’re looking for a new best friend
and family member, you can’t go wrong with Caesar!
Come meet him and his charming feline friends in
person at the shelter!
His adoption fee is $99 and includes neuter
surgery, vaccinations, microchip and
a free wellness exam at a participating
veterinarian. Caesar also qualifies for our
‘Senior for Senior adoption program’.
Feel free to call us at (626) 286-1159
for more information on Caesar. He
currently resides at the San Gabriel
Valley Humane Society located at 851
E. Grand Avenue in San Gabriel. We
are located off San Gabriel Blvd, north of
Mission and south of Las Tunas Drive.

PET OF THE WEEK: BAILEY: ANIMAL ID #A4935658
Good things can come in small packages and
Bailey is one special delivery! Meet Bailey
(A4935658) is a people-pleasing 6-year-old cream
male Chihuahua who came to the Baldwin Park
Animal Care Center on April 6 as a stray from
El Monte. Weighing 5
lbs, Bailey relishes being
carried and would gladly
be your lap dog or purse
pet. He has a gentle
disposition, so we think
he would do well with
children as long as they
are careful of his small
size. Bailey gets along
well with other dogs, and
would be a good addition
to a multi-dog household.
Bailey is adorable and
affectionate, and will be a
great addition as an indoor pet and family member
for any loving household. To watch a video of the
loving little guy, please visit the following link:

To meet Bailey in person, please see him at
the Baldwin Park Shelter, located at 4275 N.
Elton, Baldwin Park, CA 91706 (Phone: 626-

open seven days a week,
12 pm-7 pm Monday-

with a great need for
adoptions. For more

FAMILY MATTERS By Marc Garlett
WHAT TO DO WITH A
CASH WINDFALL
Many of us like to fantasize about winning the
lottery. We muse with our friends about how we
might spend the money, and we dream about
never wanting for anything ever again.
The odds are against us, of course, at least as
far as the lottery goes. But that doesn’t mean -
at some point in our lives perhaps - we won’t
actually come into a major amount of cash,
usually in the form of an inheritance, or perhaps
through the settlement of a legal claim.
Planning before receiving such a windfall is
critical if you want to keep it and have it provide
for you the rest of your life and for your loved
one’s after you are gone.
Most people who receive a windfall lose it
almost as quickly as they receive it.
If you see a windfall coming your way, get
prepared BEORE you receive it:
1. Consider putting any large windfall you
receive into an asset protection trust, first and
foremost. You may even want to consider
appointing a co-trustee to govern the trust
alongside you so you can honestly tell friends
and family that you do not have unrestricted
control to your assets when they come asking
for handouts.
2. Hire an advisor you trust to help you
invest the assets you receive in a manner that is
aligned with your values and will support you
to use the windfall to support the long-term life
you desire; if you need recommendations to a
trusted investment advisor, contact us.
3. Get all of your own estate planning
documents updated, including your Will,
Revocable Living Trust, Health Care Directives
and Power of Attorney, plus establish a
relationship with an estate planning attorney
so if and when anything happens to you, your
family will be supported to stay out of court and
out of conflict.
If you anticipate receiving a windfall and need
legal assistance, or if you’d like to ensure your
family stays out of court and out of conflict
no matter what happens to you, schedule a
Family Estate Planning Session™ with me so
we can discuss your situation, goals, and get all
your questions answered. Normally, a Family
Wealth Planning Session™ is $750, but when you
mention this article and are one of the first three
families to book an appointment this month, I’ll
waive that fee.
