Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side
by Deanne Davis
“If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end,
it would probably be Labor Day weekend.” Doug Larson
Walking Sierra Madre on Labor Day weekend has been
splendid. Saturday’s weather was so perfect that I didn’t
have to close the windows and turn on the A/C. Of course,
the only thing wrong with Saturday was the start of the
long-awaited, long-anticipated start of college football.
Watching Texas A & M stomp all over UCLA – 31 to 24 –
was sad but when Alabama wiped the stadium floor with
the Trojans – 52 to 6 – that was flat out depressing. We did
see a fantastic game Sunday afternoon: Texas Longhorns
vs. Notre Dame. That one went into double overtime with
Texas winning 50-47. As our Texas girls are all Longhorn
supporters, we were delighted.
It was so cool Sunday morning that...dare I say it...we
were chilly while walking. It’s been so long since we were
chilly outside that we hardly knew what to say. Labor
Day Monday started out with another cool morning and
beautiful blue and pink flavored clouds filling the sky.
All the changes are complete at St. Rita’s and we stopped
to admire the planters, which have some stunning crepe
myrtles in place, some succulent things and a bunch of
spider plants, which grow with determination and send
out runners to make more. My kinda plant! These plants
will effectively screen off the seven huge air conditioners
they have there in the corner. St. Rita’s is going to be
cool, friends and neighbors! The new steps and railings
are gorgeous and if you haven’t stopped by to take a look,
you should.
Labor Day Monday was very very quiet. I said to
my walking buddy and BFF, John, that tomorrow will
be different. Tomorrow will be bedlam, chaos, and a
traffic nightmare as all the children return to school.
We’re kind of excited as we love to hear them playing.
Speaking of playing, the little kids’ play area at St.
Rita’s – around the corner on Alegria – has been raked
perfectly smooth, all the toys are in plastic boxes and it
looks so lonely without a herd of little people in there.
Tomorrow! Took pictures of these scarecrows along
Grandview. So clever!
Made this really easy crustless quiche which I adapted
from a recipe I saw in the Costco Magazine.
Grape Tomato & Cauliflower Quiche
Preheat oven to 350.
1 small cauliflower, cut into small florets and steamed till
tender (about 8 minutes in a microwave steamer bag)
2 TB Olive Oil
2 TB butter
. an onion, chopped
Put the butter and olive oil in a small pan, melt the butter,
add the onion and sauté till it’s tender
8 eggs
. cup fresh basil, chopped (I didn’t have that so just used
a tsp. of basil flakes)
1 cup all purpose flour
1-1/2 tsp. baking powder
1-1/2 tsp. kosher salt
. tsp. ground turmeric
. tsp. ground cumin
Pinch of chili flakes
Ground pepper to taste
5 oz. Parmesan cheese grated (I used good ol’ Kraft’s in
the green can)
1-1/2 cups grape tomatoes, sliced (use a serrated knife)
Whisk the eggs, add in the onion, combine all the dry
ingredients and add to the egg mixture. Gently stir in the
cauliflower and tomatoes. Spray a large pie pan – I used a
10” – add the mixture. Place on middle rack and bake 40-
45 minutes till golden brown and set. Remove from oven
and let set 15-20 minutes. Slice into wedges and enjoy!
Incidentally, if you haven’t seen Pete’s Dragon yet, you
need to treat yourself. It’s an excellent movie and Robert
Redford is great.
