Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side

by Deanne Davis

“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your
head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a
lullaby.” Langston Hughes

 Monday morning we awoke to the sound of
rain. I’m sure you did, too, and it was wonderful,
delightful, thrilling, exquisite and made us want to
do our Snoopy happy dance. A gentle, easily absorbed
rain and already our drooping lemon trees are
looking a little more enthusiastic. Gerardo Jimenez,
our landscape artist and all around garden genius,
has told me that if I would set our hose out to drip
just one small drop at a time and let it do that for 24
hours, our trees would all be happier. Unfortunately, I
can’t seem to get it together to do that very simple task
so we water all the trees sparingly, stingily, a couple
of times a week, while mentally beseeching them to
continue to live. “Live my beauties! Live!”

 Walking Sierra Madre currently is so much fun
because cleverly created scarecrows are everywhere.
Moses, shown here, is in front of Ascension Church
and the sign down by his feet says, “Moses – He
started life as a Basket Case. He was the first Water
Bender. He used tablets before Apple. Created by the
youth of The Episcopal Church of the Ascension,
Sierra Madre CA.” Now that’s clever.

 If you walk down Baldwin to Sierra Madre Blvd.
and turn right, you can see the really horrifying
scarecrow Norma has out in front of Sierra Juice Co.
Leonora Moss has a great one in her window with
a good story. Savor the Flavor does, too, and there’s
one in front of the Playhouse. Look across the street
at Brown’s Classic Interiors – Dee Wallace has a
terrific window. Don’t miss the buxom lass in front
of the Buccaneer and the guy in front of The Bottle
Shop. But ya gotta walk it, friends and neighbors,
you can’t see these amazing scarecrow people out the
window of your car. Trust me! The Kensington has a
scarecrow family.

 Speaking of the Playhouse, hope you saw the
column on the Arts & Entertainment page of the
October 15 issue of the News, boldly announcing
“Return of the Tingler” – The Time Machine returns,
plus Roddy Robot. All presented by The Symbiotic
Society – formerly known as the Zombie Players. Free
shows will run every half hour from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
on Halloween Night Only! We thoroughly enjoyed
the Zombie Players presentation last Halloween and
strongly encourage you to take advantage of what The
Symbiotic Society somewhat nutty, demented and
over-the-top members have for you this year. Free is
always good, and the Playhouse is right in the center
of all the Halloween activities downtown.

 We’ve heard a lot this past week or so about bad
behavior by some of our bears on the Bailey Canyon
Trail. Lots of conjecture about a romance interrupted;
or possibly our friend, Dan Richman got between a
mama bear and her pretty overgrown cub, but we’re
happy he wasn’t hurt worse than he was and that no
bears were euthanized. All of which brought to mind
a dear friend, storyteller and singer, Rosalie Sorrells,
who for many years, sang a wonderful song:

Waltzing With Bears.

“Well my uncle Walter goes waltzing with bears;
It’s a most unbearable state of affairs.
Every Saturday night he creeps down the back stairs;
Slips out of the house and goes waltzing with bears.
Chorus:
He goes wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wa- waltzing with bears,
Raggy bears, baggy bears, shaggy bears too.
And there’s nothin’ on earth uncle Walter won’t do
So he can go waltzing - wa- wa- wa- waltzing,
So he can go waltzing, go waltzing with bears.
I went to his room in the middle of the night,
I tiptoed inside and I turned on the light;
But to my dismay he was nowhere in sight,
‘Cause my uncle Walter goes waltzing at night.
Chorus:
Well I bought uncle Walter a new coat to wear,
But when he comes in it’s all covered with hair.
And lately I’ve noticed a couple new tears;
‘Cause my uncle Walter goes waltzing with bears.”

And there’s even more about uncle Walter.... Think it
was written by Seamus Kennedy and you can find it
on YouTube. A guaranteed smile!
