B3 BUSINESS NEWS & TRENDS LETTERS & NOTICES Mountain Views News Saturday, October 22, 2016 DEAR EDITOR - RE: LEAF BLOWERS The Sierra Madre City Council will be discussing leaf blowers in the near future possibly as soon as Oct.24th.Look on the city’s web site on Fridays for the agendas before for the 2nd and 4th Tuesday meetings. If you are tired of the constant noise and air pollution by these machines please go to the meeting or contact the council members on the city website to voice your concerns. It was heard a few years ago and very little happened because not enough people spoke up.Now is your chance to perhaps once and for all rid our beautiful city of these infernal machines as many other places across the U.S. have already done.It won’t happen unless we all speak out about it. J. Brown, Sierra Madre FAMILY MATTERS By Marc Garlett WHAT CAN AMERICANS LEARN ABOUT HAPPINESS FROM BHUTAN? Bhutan is an independent state in Southeast Asia, bordered by China to the north and India to the south. Nestled in the Himalayas, Bhutan is the last remaining Buddhist state in the world. But one of the most unique aspects of Bhutanese government is the country’s use of the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index to measure the society’s level of happiness. The country reports 91.2% of Bhutanese are narrowly, extensively, or deeply happy. Across groups the index shows: · men are happier than women; · urban dwellers are happier than rural residents; · those with a higher education level are happier than the less educated; and · single or married people are happier than those widowed, divorced, or separated. The country goes on to note that happiness is improving for women, older people, and lower educated citizens more quickly than for the rest of its population. But some believe that these factors don’t tell the entire story. Culturally, the Bhutanese are “expected to think about death five times a day.” Some people feel that reflecting on death causes greater focus and increased appreciation for life. Consider an article written by Eric Weiner for the BBC. Weiner cites research that seems to demonstrate a connection between thinking about death and positive thoughts. He also argued that “Unlike many of us in the West, the Bhutanese don’t sequester death. Death—and images of death—are everywhere.” It’s true: Confronting the thing we fear the most can be quite freeing. For example, planning for death brings the peace of mind knowing we are prepared for it when the time comes. There is great satisfaction in ensuring our families will be provided for and our assets will be tended to, even after we are gone. And as the Bhutanese know, putting death in context and being prepared for it are big keys to living fuller, happier lives.
