South Pas "Never Give Up"

 The Gold Line offers some
fun getaways and this is the
first in a series of destinations
and events along the Metro
that standout to us here at the
Mountain Views News. The
fair for Metro is $1.75 one way
and you need to remember to
have a TAP card (available at
the train station).

Little Tokyo is a vibrant cultural
center with an abundance of
destinations and landmarks
in and around the historic
walkable neighborhood. Go
Little Tokyo gives you a handful
of reasons why Little Tokyo
is LA’s ultimate urban and
cultural destination.

1. Cultural Mecca: A historical
hidden treasure, the Koyasan
Buddhist Temple has operated
since 1912 and sits in the center
of Little Tokyo’s 1st Street
historical district. This specific
form of Buddhism is also
known in Japanese as “mikkyo”
(secret teaching) and is one
of several streams of practice
within the Mahayana Buddhist
tradition. Open to the public
daily, all are welcome to ring
the doorbell and peek inside .

2. Hottest Brunch: Start your
day in Little Tokyo at one of
LA’s hottest brunch spots.
Whether you’re in the mood
for sweet or savory, Jist Café has
you covered. For over 70 years,
this mom-and-pop diner has
withstood years of change in
the Little Tokyo neighborhood,
serving up delicious
contemporary Japanese and
American breakfast comfort
food. Choose from a variety
of delectable offerings, like
their famous stack of TCHO
Chocolate Chip and Banana
Pancakes or their Pork Belly
Chashu Hash Skillet with a side
of rice .

3. Foodie Haven: Approved
by the Los Angeles Times’
Jonathan Gold as a “Vietnamese
izakaya”, Simbal offers
irresistibly inventive Pan-Asian
eats. Simbal’s creative southeast
Asian cooking combines
tradition and playfulness with
small plates made for mixing
and matching, accompanied
with a wide selection of
delicious craft cocktails, all
served in an open, industrial-
chic space.

4. Delicious Desserts: Famous
for their boxed mochi (soft
rice cake)-covered ice cream
found in the frozen section of
grocery stores across the US,
Mikawaya was founded in 1910
in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.
Their flagship store is currently
located in the Japanese Village
Plaza in Little Tokyo and boasts
a variety of unique flavors such
as plum wine, matcha green
tea, Kona coffee, mango and
many more for a cold bite to
curb your sweet-tooth craving .

5. Date Night: Experience a
taste of Little Tokyo’s night life
at Wolf & Crane, Little Tokyo’s
favorite neighborhood highball
bar. Aside from housing LA’s
widest selection of Japanese
whiskeys and for mixing the
best quality cocktails, visitors
come back for the intimate
ambiance, good company and
DJs playing nostalgic hip hop
and R&B tracks on weekends .

6. Family Fun: Located in the
heart of Little Tokyo, XLanes
LA features an extravagant, fun
for the whole family venue that
includes 24 lanes of LED-lit
bowling, an arcade, a nine-table
billiard room, exclusive VIP
lounges, a lavish sports bar and
full-service American-Italian
family restaurant .

7. Shop Local: Pick up some
Maneki Neko printed knee-
high socks, local artist designed
t-shirts, or pop-inspired,
Japanese fashion accessories at
Popkiller. This trendy boutique
has provided customers with
an endless supply of funky
Japanese goods, Kawaii culture
and fun, novelty designs that
can only be found in Little
Tokyo.

 Public response to South
Pasadena Public Library’s
online Strategic Planning
survey has been very strong
with about 700 community
members completing the
survey. The online survey was
utilized to collect opinions,
suggestions, and thoughts about
the Library from the public. The
Library’s Strategic Planning
Consultant Joe Matthews also
conducted a Strategic Planning
Community Forum on
October 22 in the Community
Room. It was attended by about
20 individuals, comprised of
members of the public, the
Friends of the Library, the
Library Board of Trustees, and
the Library staff. The Library
is very appreciative of all the
input from the public from
both the Community Forum
and the Online Forum.

 Mr. Matthews has recently
published four new easy-to-
read documents that offer
analyses of the public’s Library
Strategic Planning responses:
“Analysis of Online Survey—
‘Inspiring Ideas,” “Analysis
of the Community-Related
Questions,” “Online Survey
Appendix, and “Online Survey
Related Questions”. The
documents can be found under
“News” on the homepage of
the South Pasadena Library
Website and southpasadenaca.
