PASADENA UNIFIED ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR FRENCH

DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM IN 2017-2018

SCHOOL DIRECTORY

Pasadena, CA -- The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD)
is accepting applications for a French dual language immersion
program in the 2017-2018 academic year after a group of parents
approached district officials with a proposal to add a third language
to the district’s successful dual language programs. PUSD currently
offers dual language immersion programs in Spanish and Mandarin.

“The ability to speak more than one language can enhance brain
function, academic performance and business acumen,” said
Superintendent Brian McDonald. “As a school system committed to
responding to the needs and interests of Pasadena area families, we
are expanding opportunities for multilingual education that prepare
our students to compete on a global scale.”

Enthusiastic interest from a series of meetings with parents and
an online survey prompted district officials to propose opening a
French kindergarten, first, and second grade program in 2017-2018,
with plans to expand the program into upper grades each year. The
proposal is scheduled for discussion and action by the Board of
Education in January.

Applications for the K-2 French dual language program will be
accepted during the district’s annual Open Enrollment-School
Choice process, which is January 12 through February 3, 2017.
Families of entering kindergarten students can apply for the
program online at 2017.open-enrollment.info. Families of entering
first and second grade students must schedule an appointment with
the district’s Language Assessment and Development Department
at 626.396.3600 ext. 88280. All applicants who identify as French-
dominant will be assessed for language fluency.

The French program will begin at Altadena Elementary School
and may be moved to another site at a later time.

Pasadena Unified’s Dual Language Immersion Program launched
in 2008 and expands to higher grades each year. The programs pair
native and non-native speakers of the target language who access
subject matter content in both English and the target language. The
programs begin in kindergarten with 90 percent of instruction in
the target language. Gradually the instruction shifts to 50 percent
in English and 50 percent in the target language, prompting the
student to master academic subjects in both. For more information
about PUSD’s dual language immersion programs, go to pusd.us/
Domain/1288

Pasadena Unified’s proposal reflects a national trend as dual-
language programs grow in popularity across the country. Experts
estimate there are at least 2,000 in the U.S. — a jump from about 260
in 2005. A joint U.S. Department of Education-American Institutes
for Research report shows 39 states and Washington, D.C. were
offering dual-language education during the 2012-13 school year,
with Spanish and Chinese programs cited as the most commonly
used languages.

Basketball Coach, and Mylene dela Rosa P’15 & ‘19

Sierra Madre, CA (January 12, 2017) – Both the Alverno Heights
Academy Varsity Basketball and Varsity Soccer teams are celebrating
exciting victories over the Holy Family Gaels this week.

The Varsity Basketball team faced the Gaels on Tuesday, January
10 in a nail-biting game that ended with the first league win for the
team this season. Within the first 2 minutes, junior Hailey Jiang ‘18,
hit two three-pointers back to back; ending the game with a total of
four three-pointers made.

From start to finish, the game was close; always within six points
of each other. The Jaguars logged a total of thirty eight rebounds,
thirteen steals, and eleven blocks.

Junior Hailey Jiang ‘18 was the top scorer of the night with thirteen
points total and senior Allison Joseph ‘17 right behind with a total
of eight points; Allison also lead the team in rebounds, totaling
fourteen.

The game came down to the Jaguars needing to ensure no shots
and no fouls were given in the last minute and a half to keep the three
point lead. The game ended 31-28.

On Wednesday, January 11 the Varsity Soccer team pulled out a
5-0 win against the Gaels in their Horizon League home opener. The
Jaguars dominated in the first half to lead 5-0 at halftime. Tightened
defense in the second half for both teams prevented any more scoring.

The Jaguars offense bombarded the Gaels with ten shots on goal
and three corner kicks in the first half and five shots on goal and
one corner kick in the second half. Team co-captain senior forward
Larissa Hernandez ’17 had a shot blocked in the 14th minute, but
co-captain junior midfielder Subrina Hamdan ’18 was able to put it
back in for the goal. Hamdan scored again in the 15th minute off a
free kick. In the 16th minute, junior defender Nikki Oberhammer
’18 was able to connect with junior midfielder Jazmin Rebollo ‘18.
Rebollo ‘18 dribbled past defenders to find sophomore forward
Megan Cavender ’19 in the box for another goal. Hernandez ’17
assisted a goal with a pass to sophomore midfielder Beatriz Rivas
’19 who scored in the 19th minute. Hernandez ’17 put the ball in
the goal herself in the 36th minute off a pass from junior midfielder
Natalie Scigliano ‘8.

The Jaguars backline of co-captain senior Nicole Lianto ‘17,
Oberhammer ‘18, sophomore Elisia Bendy ‘19, and freshman Cassie
Lianto ’20 did not allow a shot on goal throughout the whole match.
Junior goalkeeper Ayanna Melin ’18 had only one save of a free kick
and earned her second clean slate of the season.

Varsity Basketball will play the Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto
High School Wildcats on Tuesday, January 17 at Bishop Conaty-Our
Lady of Loretto High School in Los Angeles and soccer will face the
Ramona Convent Tigers on Wednesday, January 18 at the Glendale
Sports Complex.

About Alverno Heights Academy

Alverno Heights Academy is an all-girls, independent, progressive
Catholic, college preparatory school dedicated to its mission of
empowering each young woman to be exactly the person she wants
to be. Located on the property of the former Barlow Estate in Sierra
Madre, California, Alverno Heights Academy was founded in 1960
by the Sisters of St. Francis who sought to create an environment in
the San Gabriel Valley where young women could become informed
and knowledgeable persons. Later renamed Alverno High School
and sponsored by the Immaculate Heart Community, Alverno’s
program—academic, spiritual, aesthetic, social, and physical—has
been shaped by the staff, trustees, and students. As Alverno Heights
Academy once again, the school remains committed to its mission
by encouraging each of their young women to be who they imagine.
