order to be considered, band
representatives submitted
detailed applications, which
included photos, video footage
and letters of recommendation.
Bands are required to raise all
necessary funds for travel and
accommodations. In addition
to marching in the five-and-a-
half-mile Rose Parade on New
Year’s Day, bands also perform
in one of three Bandfest events
scheduled for December 29
and 30, 2017 at Pasadena City
College.

 Band applications for the 2019
Rose Parade will be available
on the Tournament of Roses
website in spring 2017.

Senator Anthony J. Portantino
introduced SB 275 Thursday
that gives the Los Angeles
County Assessor’s Office the
ability to assess single-family
homes within the 710 corridor
appropriately. Keeping
properties affordable in the 710
corridor has been the goal and
intent of the state legislature
since passing the Roberti Bill
in 1979.

 The Roberti Bill planned and
outlined the process for the
disposition of the 710 properties
acquired by Caltrans. The Bill
directed the Department of
Transportation to sell surplus
residential properties along
SR 710 in a manner that
would preserve, upgrade, and
expand the supply of housing
available in the region. It also
put an emphasis on making
those homes and properties
affordable. The affordable
housing crisis continues to
be one of California’s biggest
issues and the disposition of
the Caltrans homes has finally
arrived. Legislation is now
needed to help the Los Angeles
County Assessor meet the spirit
and intent of Roberti.

 “This legislation will allow
many of the residents who
live in the SR 710 corridor
to purchase property with
an assessed valuation that
would not price them out
of that purchase,” stated
Portantino. “As the 710 surface
freeway and tunnel’s days are
numbered it is imperative that
we enact practical legislation
to help facilitate the proper
disposition of the Caltrans
homes and properties. I am
very grateful to the Los Angeles
County Assessor’s office for
working collaboratively on this
important fix for the residents
in my district,” concluded
Portantino.

 It was always intended that
many of the 710 homes and
properties would go to existing
tenants and be affordable
at the time of purchase. As
the affordable housing crisis
continues to be one of Los
Angeles’ biggest issues, this
bill has taken on even more
importance.

 “Assisting people who will
purchase 710 corridor homes
by valuing the properties
for affordability is the right
thing to do,” said Jeffrey
Prang, Los Angeles County
Assessor. “I support Senator
Portantino’s efforts to resolve
the long-standing concern
about residential properties
in the path of the former 710
Freeway.”

 Assessor Prang emphasized that
the clear direction provided in
Senator Portantino’s legislation
to assist the residents of the
area by making the homes as
affordable as possible.

Edan Epstein, Afternoon of the
Faun

Wednesday, March 15: 7 pm

 In this South Pasadena author’s
sixth novel, a man struggles
with grief following the death
of his charismatic father. His
despair sends him on a quest
to become completely invisible.
His journey perversely parallels
his father’s childhood struggle
for survival in the forests of
Europe at the end of World War
II. Afternoon of the Faun is a
lyrical tale of descent, survival,
and redemption.

Huntington Gets Unique
Edition of John Muir Writings

The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical
Gardens announced Wednesday that it has acquired a
unique 10-volume edition of The Life and Writings of
John Muir (1916–1924) that incorporates 260 original
photographs—most by Herbert W. Gleason (1855–1937),
a nature photographer who inspired the work of Ansel
Adams. The items were purchased at The Huntington’s
20th annual Library Collectors’ Council meeting held last
month.

The Council also purchased A Monograph on the Genus
Camellia (1819), an outsize volume containing sumptuous
hand-colored aquatint plates after watercolors by Clara
Maria Pope (d. 1838), one of a small number of women in
England who pursued an artistic career in the late 18th and
early 19th centuries.

Additional purchases included manuscripts by a close
member of Galileo’s circle and by a U.S. Revolutionary
War officer, as well as a genealogical roll of arms from the
Elizabethan era.

“During the past two decades, the Library Collectors’
Council has helped us acquire more than 100 significant
items—including rare books, individual manuscripts,
archival collections, and photographs—and spent nearly
$3.9 million doing so,” said David Zeidberg, Avery Director
of the Library at The Huntington.

The Library Collectors’ Council is a group of 43 families who
assist in the development of the collections by supporting
the purchase of important works that the Library would not
otherwise be able to afford.
