Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side

by Deanne Davis

SUPERVISOR BARGER COMES TO SIERRA MADRE

On Thursday the City Council of Sierra Madre held a special meeting with newly elect ed LA
County Supervisor Kathyrn Barger to discuss the status of the MS4 Permit requirements (Waste
Discharge Requirements for cities separate storm sewer systems) and ways for Sierra Madre to
remain in compliance. Updates on the 710 Extension and Measure H were also given.

“My favorite way to cook trout is whole, bone-in, on
the grill. The fish is stuffed with sliced lemon and herb
sprigs, brushed with oil, and cooked over fairly hot
coals until the skin is crisp and the flesh is moist and
flaky. Go ahead and gild the lily by adding a sauce.”

I don’t know if these little guys I photographed at
the Huck Finn Fishing Derby, sponsored by the
Fire Fighters, last Saturday are going to cook their
trout that way, but this much I do know, they will be
getting ice cream if their picture is in the paper. That’s
the Fire Fighter’s Rule! Declan and Nolan here with
their FisherKids Certificates and proud dads, just out
of sight, holding nets with two or three really good
sized trout in them... 3 and almost a half pounds is
what I’d call a good sized trout... have obviously had
a really good time. Took a picture, too, of a cute little
girl, Tabitha, who was standing on a rock working on
her casting. I asked her if she liked fishing and got the
“I’m only doing this to make my mom happy!” look.
But she was having a great time being outside on a
beautiful day.

“When a trout rises to a fly, it does not swim as much as
tilt its fins and jet skyward!”

Joseph Monninger

Saturday was an absolutely gorgeous day, fluffy clouds
in the sky, a nice breeze, sunlight enough to warm the
bones...and after camping out all night Friday, some of
those parental bones probably needed warming... and
the smoky remains of a campfire drifted by from time
to time on the breeze. We, my fishing buddy, John, and
I, went out around 10:30 or so to see what there was to
see and what we saw were families having a wonderful
time together. The Pasadena Casting Club was giving
lessons and we were really impressed with some of
the fly-casting we saw. We especially enjoyed several
moms who were casting with their daughters’ Hello
Kitty rods; said daughters having wandered off to see
what else was going on. Checking out Amazon.com, I
was astonished to see how many kinds of fishing poles
especially for kids there are available. John still has the
fishing poles he’s carried through his life from when
he and his Dad used to go fishing together when he
was a little kid. They went to some stream, he said, not
too far away, never caught anything but had a good
time. That’s pretty much what it’s about, isn’t it, having
a good time with your family.

Here’s something nice about Sierra Madre: The
FormLA Landscaping Newsletter mentioned us! And
I quote:

“The City of Sierra Madre looked at its broad expanses
of lawn around city hall and saw an opportunity to
conserve some water – and a little green. They reached
out to Glenn Putnam with the Sierra Madre Garden
Club to instigate a redesign of the space into a vibrant
park comprised of water-wise, foothill-friendly plants.
The Garden Club involved the full community in the
project. The Sierra Madre Community Foundation
joined the Garden Club to raise funds by selling bricks
and benches to mitigate the costs of the renovation.
The Sierra Madre Senior Commission sponsored the
Authentic Foothill Shade Garden. The Garden Club
also recruited community groups and residents to
help plant the new foliage. The Authentic LA Foothill
Gardens at Sierra Madre City Hall are now a source of
pride and cost savings for the city.”

We love how the gardens ‘round City Hall look
now. We can be very proud of ourselves as this is a
beautiful and water-wise area where it’s very pleasant
to just sit and look up at our own personal mountains.

Another thought on things floral: Trader Joe’s has
daffodils, 10 stems for $1.49, where you cut an inch
off the bottom, stick ‘em in some water and you’ll
have a week of absolute beauty and joy. We keep ours
in the kitchen.

A few goodies you might want to know about: Our
Library has a volunteer technology tutor available to
help patrons learn how to use the internet, software
such as Excel and Word, how to set up email, and
conquer their smart phones or tablets. He’ll be there
Monday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 2
to 5 p.m. Sign up or drop in and he’ll help you. Neat!
And, speaking of the Library, I finished “Rise of the
Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from
Missiles to the Moon to Mars” and if you haven’t read
this yet, start! It’s a terrific book, trust me!

Don’t forget Legendary Bingo is April 15th at the
Recreation Center to support our Rose Float. This is
NOT your Grandmother’s bingo! 6:30 till when the
last chip falls!

And, one last thing, today, April 1st, is my Walking
Sierra Madre buddy, John’s, and my 50th Anniversary.
More about that next week.
