Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side

by Deanne Davis

“Summer means happy times and good sunshine. Itmeans going to the beach, going to Disneyland, havingfun.” Brian Wilson

“Disneyland is a work of love. We didn’t go intoDisneyland just with the idea of making money.” Walt
Disney

Summer is, indeed, here, and our Texas girls,
daughter, Crissy, and granddaughters Jessie and Emily,
9 and 7 respectively, have finally arrived. We have beenplanning their trip to California for what feels likeyears and it’s utterly delightful to have them here inour clutches where we can take them all the places welike to go, surround them with cousins they’ve nevermet, and have them smile one million times while
somebody else takes their picture....well, actually, thatsomeone is usually me... and here is one of the picturesI’ve taken.

They arrived last Thursday and will be here till nextSaturday, which is way too short a visit, but VacationBible School at Wylie First Baptist starts on Mondaythe 12th. They’re registered, the shirts are boughtand they’ll be there! We headed to P F Chang’s inVictoria Gardens off the 15 as soon as they landedat Ontario for the traditional lunch...our family’stradition... whenever anybody gets off a plane, we headimmediately for P F Chang’s for steamed dumplings,
kung pao shrimp, crispy honey shrimp, a glass of wine,
pictures with the big horse in front, and to scheduleplans. Friday we went to see “Captain Underpants”
which was an absolute hoot. We all loved it, laughedourselves silly then went to dinner with Aunt Leah andUncle Chuck for another fabulous time.

Saturday was pool party at Aunt Patti’s and UncleDave’s and cousins, uncles, aunts, great-uncles andall sorts of folks from two year old Brady to 91 yearold Uncle Jay had a great time swimming, eatinghamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, fruit and potato salad.
Sunday after church was a repeat of Saturday andMonday they’re all off to KidSpace and John and I areregrouping. Regrouping means a nap.

Some weeks ago, Emily, who is 7 and just successfullyexited First Grade with an award for reading, called usto tell us what she had in mind for her visit. I quote,
“Grandma! I want to go to Disneyland and the beachand LegoLand and everywhere!” We’re planning a tripto the beach on Wednesday and tomorrow is the longawaited, greatly anticipated trip to Disneyland. Johnand I used to take the kids, when they were little to

Disneyland and we had coupons – A through E - forthe rides. “A” tickets being for boring stuff and all thegood/scary rides were “E’s”. I also don’t remember it
costing a lot. Of course, I could be confused, but I cansee us all now riding the Mad Hatter’s Teacups, SpaceMountain, Peter Pan, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, Pirates of
the Caribbean and, of course, Small World, without
having to take out a second on the house.

Talking over coffee with Aunt Patti, who is takingCrissy and the girls to Disneyland tomorrow, with bigcousins, Nicole, Blake and Luke who all have annual
passes, she casually dropped the information that itwill be “just $318.00 to get in but then there will befood and drinks, too.” You know that feeling when theworld sort of goes dark and you think you might faint?
I felt that. $318.00? Seriously? Yep! But they will havean unforgettable time and John and I will, too, as wewon’t be going!

Walt said he didn’t go into Disneyland with the ideaof making money, but I think something’s changedthere at the Happiest Place On Earth. So we dug downdeep in our pockets, looked under the couch cushions,
told each other we’re pathetically out of date and aresending the girls off tomorrow loaded with enoughdough to get in, ride everything, eat their way throughthe entire Magic Kingdom and buy a few dozensouvenirs. Hey! You don’t get to Disneyland every day,
especially if you live in Texas!

Crayons and coloring books, puzzles, damp bathingsuits and very small pieces of clothing are all over theplace, but we couldn’t be happier. Those of you outthere who are looking forward to a visit from smallpeople, just remember to enjoy every moment anddon’t worry about anything else. “It’s a Small Worldafter all!”
