Sibling Registration: The brothers and sisters ofPUSD students currently attending PUSD schoolson a permit have a one-time-only opportunity topre-enroll in the same school for 2018-2019 throughSibling Registration, which opens Oct. 30. To beeligible for Sibling Registration, students must liveat the same home address in PUSD and siblingsmust attend the same school together in the 2018-19school year.

Priority Enrollment is for current Willard 5thgraders who will transition to Blair Middle School’sInternational Baccalaureate program, and for 
current 5th and 8th grade students in Dual LanguageImmersion Programs who will continue in DualImmersion programs next year.

Registration takes place at schools--not theDistrict office—and once a student completes Sibling& Priority Registration, they are pre-enrolled for thenext academic year and may not participate in anyother phase of 2018-19 Open Enrollment-SchoolChoice.

Math Academy: 

PUSD’s Math Academy begins in 6th grade and isoffered at three PUSD schools in 2018-2019: 

• McKinley K-8 School
• Sierra Madre Middle School 
• Washington STEAM Magnet Academy
Current PUSD fifth grade students who maybe eligible for Math Academy in the 6th gradeshould not pre-register through Sibling & PriorityEnrollment in November for a middle school that 
does not have a Math Academy program.
To apply for the Math Academy in 2018-2019Current PUSD students 

• Applicants (rising 6th graders) must take anassessment November 13-17, 2017. Results will be 
released the week of December 4, 2017 
• Apply online to a middle school with a MathAcademy program through Open Enrollment-
School Choice January 11 - February 2, 2018
• Applicants must take a final qualifying test inearly March
• Eligible candidates register for school the weekof March 12-16, 2018

WHAT ARE ‘STEAM’ SUBJECTS 
AND WHY DO THEY MATTER? 


(StatePoint) If you’ve heard your child’s educatorstalking about “STEAM” subjects, they are 
referring to Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts and Math. And these subjects are growing inimportance, as more industries require a strongmastery of the concepts and skills involved.

What’s more, a growing body of research showsthat exposure to the arts can have a positive impacton one’s performance in science and math-orientedsubjects. As your children prepares to succeed inall their classes, keep these things in mind: 

The Right Classes

Talk to your children about ensuring they stacktheir class schedules with courses that challengebut don’t overwhelm them. It’s easy to overloada schedule with far too many advanced sciencecourses in one semester that can make success 
unattainable. By the same token, it’s important toensure that your student is taking enough of theright classes to build a strong foundation for futureendeavors. A guidance counselor can help yourchild strike the right balance. 

The Right Tools

STEAM success is built on having the righttools, so be sure students are well-equipped. Newmodels of calculators are taking into account thedemands on today’s students and offer expandedfeatures that give students the ability to easily draw 

three dimensional graphs and view them fromvarious angles to better analyze their shapes. Forexample, the fx-CG50, the newest model in Casio’scalculator portfolio, features a picture plot functionand color LCD with a full textbook-style display.

Likewise, students can build a strong artsfoundation by learning to play an instrument.

The Right Programming

After school programming can be an idealopportunity to reinforce STEAM learning in a waythat is fun, creative and social. From the robotics 
club to the orchestra, find out what your schooland larger community offer, and encourage yourchild to get involved. This programming will likelyimprove grades and test scores, as well as help yourchild draw connections between disciplines.

While not all trends are worthy of your attention,
the importance of STEAM learning can’t beunderstated and, as a parent, you can help bolstersuccess in these subjects.

FALL KID’S CAMP


The Recreation and Community Services 
Department offers the Fall Kid’s Camp at Holly 
Avenue Elementary School, 360 W. Duarte 
Road, Arcadia starting Monday, November 20 to 
Wednesday, November 22 from 8am-6pm. Each 
day is filled with fun group activities including 
crafts, board games, movies, and snacks for youth 
ages 5-12. Parents are able to sign their children up 
for one day or all three. 

Fall camp is $27 per child per day. To get a copy 
of the fall “Buzz” stop by our office, 375 Campus 
Drive; Arcadia City Hall, 240 W. Huntington Drive; 
or the Arcadia Public Library, 20 W. Duarte Road. 
To register in person come by our office or you 
can go to the city’s website at www.arcadiaCA.govunder the Recreation and Community Services 
Department to download a copy. The “Buzz” 
also displays programs and classes for the 2016 
fall season in our new, more user-friendly format
