A Film Night showcasing
the award-winning 2015
documentary “Tyrus” will
be presented in the Library
Community Room on
Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m.
The tour-de-force feature,
17 years in the making,
focuses on the inspirational
life of pioneering, Chinese-
American artist Tyrus
Wong. He came to the U.S.
from China as a young boy
with his father in the early
20th century.

 Tyrus’s only interests were
in painting and drawing and
he passionately overcame
poverty and bigotry,
becoming one of the first
artists to infuse Chinese
aesthetics into American
modern art, animation, and
design. The quiet beauty
of his Eastern influenced
paintings caught the eye of
Walt Disney and became the
inspiration for the classic
animated film “Bambi.”
Tyrus later worked at Warner
Brothers for 25 years, serving
as visual consultant for more
than 100 films, including
“Rebel Without a Cause,”
“The Wild Bunch,” and
“April in Paris.” Later in his
commercial art career, Tyrus
designed popular greeting
cards and beautiful kites
admired by millions. Tyrus
lived a vibrant life to the age
of 105 and retrospectives of
his work have appeared at
the Disney Family Museum
in San Francisco and the
Museum of Chinese in
America in New York City.

 The event will also exhibit
a handful of Tyrus’s artworks
handpicked by his family
and will open with a brief
set of musical stylings by
Calvin Joe on vocals and
acoustic guitar. The “Tyrus”
film will be introduced by
its filmmaker Pamela Tom,
who will also conduct an
interactive Q & A with the
audience. The free event
is presented by the South
Pasadena Public Library,
the Friends of the South
Pasadena Public Library,
and the South Pasadena
Chinese American Club.
Tyrus DVDs, notecards, and
mugs will be available for
purchase.

 Free parking is available in
the South Pasadena Unified
School District lot at 1020 El
Centro Street.

 The Community Room is
located at 1115 El Centro
Street. Doors will open
at 6:30 p.m. No tickets or
reservations are necessary
and refreshments will be
served.

 A recent community survey
of South Pasadena residents
is now available for the
public to access online. The
survey was conducted in
April with input from about
600 residents.

 The purpose of the study
was to research residents’
satisfaction, priorities
and concerns with city
services, facilities, strategic
goals, and tax issues. It was
conducted by True North, a
research firm specializing in
municipal government.

 The survey showed high
satisfaction with the quality
of life in South Pasadena,
with 9-in-10 residents
reporting excellent or
good. It also showed
strong satisfaction (8-in-10
positive) with municipal
services.

The survey asked residents
about the potential repeal of
the Utility Users’ Tax (UUT)
on the November ballot, and
showed a strong majority
(70%) in favor of retaining
the tax to avoid cuts to
city services. Additional
questions focused on
City communications
vehicles, showing digital
tools (e-newsletters, web,
social media) as residents’
preferred methods of
information delivery.

 Priorities that emerged
from the survey helped
inform the draft Fiscal Year
2018-19 budget, city officials
said, including investments
in infrastructure and
street repairs, emergency
preparedness and economic
development.
