MARC HERNANDEZ NAMED NEW ATHLETIC 
DIRECTOR AT LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL

La Salle High School has named Marc Hernandez, M.Ed., 
CAA its next Director of Athletics. He will transition into 
his role, currently occupied by Anthony Harris, on June 
1, 2018. Hernandez was formerly an Athletic Director at 
Saint Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs, and currently 
teaches English at La Salle.

 “We are very excited to have Marc as our new athletic 
director. He brings a wealth of experience that not only 
includes coaching and athletic administration, but also 
classroom teaching and experience from the business 
world. We know he is the right person to lead La Salle 
athletics into the future,” said Principal Courtney 
Kassakhian. 

 Under his direction as Athletic Director at Saint Paul 
High School, the Swordsmen earned 14 league titles, a 
CIF Champions of Character Award, a CIF finals berth in 
baseball and a CIF Championship in football. Hernandez 
was also Dean of Students and an Assistant Admissions 
Director. Hernandez was a coach at Woodrow Wilson 
High School, and a teacher and coach at Salesian High 
School and Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. 
Hernandez won the CIF 3A Football title at Woodrow 
Wilson. 

 “Today marks a new era in La Salle’s Athletics program, 
and I am proud that our School will be continuing our 
strong student-athlete programs and will be led by our 
new forward-thinking director,” said Dr. Richard Gray, La 
Salle’s President. “I could not be more enthusiastic about 
Marc’s appointment as he brings extensive experience, 
leadership and vision to the position.

 A native of Los Angeles, and an outstanding football 
player at Saint Paul High School, Hernandez was an 
All-League offensive and defensive player. Hernandez 
continued his playing career at Central College in Iowa 
where he played for legendary coach Ron “Skip” Schipper. 
Hernandez was a four-year letterman and the Dutch were 
nationally ranked and went 44-4 during his college career. 
Hernandez was a member of the 1996 All-American 
Bowl team.

 Hernandez earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 
English at Central College, in Iowa and a Master of 
Arts, Education - Curriculum and Instruction from the 
University of Phoenix. 

 “To be chosen as the Director of Athletics of a 
prestigious, academic institution like La Salle is truly an 
honor. I look forward to the opportunity to continue the 
growth of La Salle’s athletic program and setting forth a 
new direction,” said Hernandez.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL COLLEGE DECISION DAY!

Members of the Class of 2018 Display Their Future Plans

Sierra Madre, CA (May 23, 2018) – This month 
members of Alverno Heights Academy’s Class of 2018 
joined in the celebrations for National College Decision 
Day by sporting their college sweatshirts. As in years 
past, Alverno Heights Academy is excited and proud 
that 100 percent of our graduates were accepted to 
college! To date, these young women have received over 
$3.5 million in scholarships and grants with awards still 
rolling in. 

 Alverno graduates will be attending the University 
of California campuses in Berkeley, San Diego, Santa 
Barbara, and Santa Cruz. Private, out of state, and 
international universities being attended by members 
of the Class of 2018 include American Musical and 
Dramatic Academy, Art Center College of Design, 
Azusa Pacific University, Boston College, Cal Lutheran 
University, Caltech, Chapman University, Georgia Tech, 
Holy Names University, Ithaca College, Massachusetts 
Institute of Technology, Mount St. Mary’s University, 
Otis College of Design, Pace University, Sarah Lawrence 
College, University of Portland, University of San Diego. 
Additionally, members of the class of 2018 have chosen 
the California State Universities in Channel Islands, 
Fresno, Pomona, San Diego, San Francisco, and 
Sonoma as their home for the next four years. Finally, 
Alverno will have graduates at Citrus College, Glendale 
Community College, Pasadena City College, and Santa 
Monica College. 

 Alverno Heights Academy’s Baccalaureate will be 
held on Friday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Rita’s Church 
at 318 North Baldwin in Sierra Madre. Alverno’s 
Commencement will be held on Saturday, June 2 at 5:30 
p.m. on the Alverno terrace. Tickets are required for 
Graduation. 

 “Over the course of four years, these young women 
have worked incredibly hard to get to this exciting 
moment,” said Julia V. Fanara, Head of School. “We are 
extremely proud of their accomplishments and although 
they will be missed, we wish them well on this next big 
adventure in their lives. They are joining more than 
3,800 Alverno alumnae who have all gone on and made 
a lasting impact in this world and we cannot wait to see 
what contributions these graduates make.”

Can you provide some tips on how to choose a good 
estate sale company who can sell all the leftover 
items in my mother’s house?

Dear Inquiring,

 The estate sale business has become a huge 
industry over the past decade. There are roughly 
22,000 estate sale companies that currently operate 
in the U.S., up nearly 60 percent from just 10 years 
ago. But not all estate sale companies are alike. 

 Unlike appraisal, auction and real estate 
companies, estate sale operators are largely 
unregulated, with no licensing or standard 
educational requirements. That leaves the door 
open for inexperienced, unethical or even illegal 
operators. Therefore, it’s up to you to decipher a 
good reputable company from a bad one. Here are 
some tips to help you choose.

 Make a list: Start by asking friends, your real 
estate agent or attorney for recommendations. You 
can also search online. Websites like EstateSales.
net and EstateSales.org let you find estate sale 
companies in your area. 

 Check their reviews: After you find a few 
companies, check them out on the Better Business 
Bureau (BBB.org), Angie’s List (AngiesList.com), 
Yelp (Yelp.com) and other online review sites to 
eliminate ones with legitimately negative reviews. 

 Call some companies: Once you identify some 
estate sale companies, select a few to interview 
over the phone. Ask them how long they’ve been 
in business and how many estate sales they conduct 
each month. Also find out about their staff, the 
services they provide, if they are insured and 
bonded and if they charge a flat fee or commission. 
The national average commission for an estate sale 
is around 35 percent, but commissions vary by city 
and region.

 You may also want to ask them about visiting 
their next sale to get a better feel for how they 
operate. And be sure to get a list of references of 
their past clients and call them.

 
Schedule appointments: Set up two or three face-
to-face interviews with the companies you felt 
provided you with satisfactory answers during the 
phone interviews. 

 During their visit, show the estate liquidator 
through the property. Point out any items that 
will not be included in the sale, and if you have 
any items where price is a concern, discuss it with 
them at that time. Many estate companies will give 
you a quote, after a quick walk through the home.

 You also need to ask about their pricing (how do 
they research prices and is every item priced), how 
they track what items sell for, what credit cards do 
they accept, and how and where will they promote 
and market your sale. EstateSales.net is a leading 
site used to advertise sales, so check advertising 
approaches there. 

 Additionally, ask how many days will it take 
them to set up for the sale, how long will the sale 
last, and will they take care of getting any necessary 
permits to have the sale. 

 You also need to find out how and when you will 
be paid, and what types of services they provide 
when the sale is over. Will they clean up the house 
and dispose of the unsold items, and is there’s an 
extra charge for that? Also, make sure you get a 
copy of their contract and review it carefully before 
you sign it.
