Often seen as an activity just for kids, Adult Coloring is now a favorite among many adults to help destress, focus, and contemplate their busy days. Spend an hour with us revisiting your favorite childhood activity along with treats and tea. Supplies will be provided but feel free to bring your own coloring books and pencils as well. No pre-registration required, but please only adults 18 and over. Creative Writing Workshop Sunday, 2 pm: Jun 10 Are you a writer looking to sharpen your skills or gain inspiration for your current project? Or are you someone who loves to write creatively as a hobby? Spark your creativity with creative writing prompts and activities. Feel free to share your work with others in a non-judgmental environment. No registration is required, but must be 18 years or older to participate. Journey into Pu-erh Tea Sunday, 2 pm: Jun 17 If you are interested in learning about Puerh tea, Jeffrey McIntosh, Tea Master- intraining, will present a program covering its historic and geographic origins, ecological cultivation, health benefits, cultural evolution, and relevance from past to present time. The program consists of an informative lecture followed by an interactive traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Attendees will leave with a deeper appreciation of simplicity, subtlety, and pure enjoyment of the present moment. Braille Institute: Coping Skills for Sight Loss Mondays, 10:30 am: Jun 18 & 25 Sight loss can be caused by macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts or diabetic retinopathy. On Monday, June 18 and 25, the Braille Institute will offer the latest information on adapting to visual changes and which assistive devices might be appropriate for individuals. Practical day- to-day applications will be presented such as organizing and identifying money and marking and labeling household items. Attendees will learn about resources for getting around town and assistance with orientation and mobility. Get Your Blood Pressure and Glucose Checked By a Huntington Hospital Outreach Nurse Wednesday, 10 am: Jun 20 Huntington Hospital Community Outreach nurses want to empower all members of the community to enjoy the healthiest lifestyle possible. They offer free blood pressure and glucose screenings. Be sure to fast two hours before having your glucose checked. Mindfulness with Ron Serven Saturday, 2 pm: Jun 23 This exciting workshop will teach you how to be present in your life and not just a spectator from afar. All participants will learn how to become more self-aware, how to be more aware of how you live your life and connect to others, and how to integrate mindfulness into your life as well as learn the basics and benefits of meditation. Independence Day Blood Drive Monday, 10 am–4 pm: Jul 2 Celebrate our country’s independence by putting the red in red, white and blue! Giving blood at the library is safe and easy. Specific citywide watering restrictions in San Marino shall continue to be to enforced as wall at ongoing public outreach for the additional water conservation recommendations and best management practices shall be monitored in an effort to encourage residential and business owners to make water conservation a way of life. Residents and business owners are encouraged to adjust their irrigation schedules to reflect the following practice: Spring/Summer Schedule- thru October 31st, allows for residential and commercial properties to water a maximum of three days a week for residential and commercial properties (see days of the week below). The Winter Schedule, November 1st thru March 31st, allows for residential and commercial properties to water a maximum of two days a week. The two days of the week are at the discretion of the property owner based on the allowable days for the respective address. Current City water restrictions for watering residential and commercial properties that are being enforced include the following: Hosing off sidewalks, driveways and other hardscape areas Washing cars with hoses not equipped with a shut-off nozzle Use of fountains that do not re- circulate the water Watering lawns in a manner that causes run-off or within 48 hours of rainfall Additional water conservation recommendations and best management practices that are being monitored: •Limits On Watering Hours: Watering or irrigating of lawn, landscape or other vegetated area with potable water is prohibited between the hours of nine o’clock (9:00) A.M. and five o’clock (5:00) P.M. Pacific Time on any day, except by use of a handheld bucket or similar container, a handheld hose equipped with a positive self- closing water shutoff nozzle or device, or for very short periods of time for the express purpose of adjusting or repairing an irrigation system. •Limits On Watering Days: Watering or irrigating of lawn, landscape or other vegetated area with potable water shall be limited to either (3) three days per week or (2) two days a week based on the time of year and in accordance with the following schedule: properties with odd numbered addresses may do so on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays; properties with even numbered addresses may do so on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Wednesday is a Citywide “No Watering” day. Watering or irrigating of lawn, landscape or other vegetated area with potable water outside of this schedule shall be monitored. •Limits On Watering Duration: Watering or irrigating of lawn, landscape or other vegetated area with potable water using a landscape irrigation system or a watering device that is not continuously attended is limited to no more than fifteen (15) minutes watering per day per station. This subsection does not apply to landscape irrigation systems that exclusively use very low flow drip type irrigation systems when no emitter produces more than two (2) gallons of water per hour and weather based controllers or stream rotor sprinklers that meet a seventy percent (70%) efficiency standard An Author Night showcasing “Ali’s Bees,” an award-winning 2017 book and play by Dr. Bruce Olav Solheim, will be presented in the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room on Thursday, June at 7 p.m. The free event for students, family members, friends, and everyone else will open with a talented group of young actors performing a few scenes from “Ali’s Bees” that will bring the story to life. Their half hour performance will be followed by a presentation with author/playwright Solheim, the book’s illustrator Gabby Untermayerova, and a representative from the Council on American Islamic Relations. An interactive Q & A with the audience by the panelists will conclude the event. “Ali’s Bees” has won a Silver Medal from the 2017 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards competition and is “Indie Reader Approved.” “Ali’s Bees” has been accorded consistently glowing reviews on “Amazon” and “Goodreads” and has been featured in the “Pasadena Star-News” and “VVA Veterans Magazine.” Dr. Bruce Olav Solheim, the author/ playwright, is a U.S. Army veteran and a Distinguished Professor of History at Citrus College in Glendora, CA. Ali, a young Iraqi boy loses his parents in the Iraq War and comes to live with his beekeeper grandfather in America. Ali must learn to make new friends, deal with conflict and bullying, heal from wartime trauma, and learn to pay the strange game of baseball. More importantly, Ali inherits a love of honeybees from his grandfather and works to help save them. “Ali’s Bees” (the play and the book) deals with the essential themes of tolerance, forgiveness, conflict resolution, and the far-reaching benefits of cooperation. Free parking is available in the South Pasadena Unified School District lot at 1020 El Centro Street (entrance from Fairview Avenue between El Centro and Mission) and after noon at the Mission Meridian Parking Garage located at 805 Meridian Avenue adjacent to the Metro Gold Line Station, only one block from the Library. Dr. Bruce Olav Solheim Magical Music at the Mill The Old Mill Foundation announced that Magical Music at the Mill, chamber music under the stars, will return to The Old Mill in summer. Each evening will feature a different music ensemble performing on the Pomegranate Patio surrounded by the Mill’s beautiful pomegranate trees and lush gardens. In addition to enjoying the fine music, concertgoers are invited to view the building, learn about its history, and view the latest California Art Club exhibition in the Mill’s gallery. Voter Information at the South Pasadena Library In preparation for the upcoming state-wide election on Tuesday and the November midterm elections, the South Pasadena Public Library has both print and online voter resources available, including the Easy Voter Guide from the League of Women Voters. Created in collaboration with the California State Library, the aim of the Guide is to “make nonpartisan information about why you should vote, how to vote and what’s on the ballot as accessible to as many Californians as possible.” The Library has free copies in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean available at the Reference Desk. The celebration will include food booths, a fun zone, a community parade, entertainment, and a fireworks display at 9 p.m. All guests will need a wristband to enter the park. The Virginia Road entrance to Lacy Park will open at 7 a.m. No one will be allowed to enter via St. Albans Road until 3 p.m. Guests may reserve areas using blankets and chairs; no stakes or ropes will be permitted. Pre-sale wristbands will be available to San Marino residents for $5 each. Proof of residency is required and residents must present an identification card with their address or a utility bill. Pre-sale wristbands will be available for non-residents for $15 each. Children ages 2 years and under are free. Wristbands can be purchased Monday, June 11 through Tuesday, July 3 at the Recreation Department, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at City Hall, Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Friday from 7 to 11 a.m. Wristband sales begin at Crowell Public Library on Monday, June 18, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Wristbands purchased on Wednesday, July 4 are $20 each, regardless of residency. Children on decorated bikes accompanied by an adult are invited to participate. Bikes parade in a special section at the front and no registration is needed. Bands are also welcome.
