the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

November 15, 2018 – The City of Arcadia celebrates
the start of the holiday season with the fourth annual
Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration on Thursday,
December 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event takes
place at the Arcadia Transit Plaza on the corner of
Santa Clara Street and North First Avenue, and will
feature the lighting of the official Christmas Tree in
Arcadia by the Mayor, City Council, and Santa Claus.

Santa will arrive on an Arcadia Fire Truck and help
the Mayor “flip the switch,” bringing the festive tree
to life with lights and decorations. The celebration
includes free cocoa and cookies, strolling carolers, a
kids’ craft table where youngsters can decorate their
own ornaments, face painting, and holiday photos.
One of the highlights of this event is the holiday
craft market featuring a variety of local, handcrafted
items, gifts, and foods.

Bring a little joy to the children in need in our
community by donating a new, unwrapped toy.
The City will deliver the donated toys to the
Foothill Unity Center in time for their annual toy
distribution.

Don’t forget to join us for our other fun holiday
festivities. The merriment starts at the beginning
of December with two holiday events. The always
popular Breakfast with Santa is on December 1 at the
Community Center with two options for breakfast:

A very special Veterans Day Observance was held on
November 12 at Monrovia’s Library Park. Master of
Ceremony Scott Sinclair, President, Allied Veterans
Council welcomed us. He thanked us for attending
and noted the poignant poem, “In Flanders’ Field”
printed on one side of the program. Since it was the
100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, Scott felt this was
very appropriate. Floyd Henderson, Willie Williams,
Craig Switzer, Ed Barlow and Brian Neumann from
VFW 2070 posted Colors, followed by Monrovia HS
Band’s beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.
The Band also performed “America the Beautiful”,
“God Bless America”, a “Veterans Salute” (The
“theme” song for each branch of service) and Taps.
The beautiful Invocation and Benediction were done
by Chaplain Lionel Moreno, 18th District American
Legion. Presenters included Congresswoman Judy
Chu, Monrovia Council Member Larry Spicer(Army
Veteran), Arcadia City Clerk Gene Glasco, (Navy
Veteran), Duarte Mayor John Fasana, Kristy Lopez for
Senator Anthony Portantino and Hector Rodriguez
for Assemblyman Holden. All thanked the Veterans
not only for their service, but the sacrifices made by
them and their families.

Guest speaker, Major General Mark MacCarley,
Deputy Commanding General Support, First Army
Rock Island Arsenal was phenomenal. As a military
wife for twenty-two years, who lived in Germany
and South Korea, I experienced firsthand difficult
times-Korean President Park was assassinated and the
wives and children were prepared to leave on short
notice. What was so heartwarming to me and all
attendees about the General was he acknowledged
ALL MILITARY. It didn’t matter what their rank,
position, or assignment location was. All military
men and women risk all and give all for our country.
They make sacrifices leaving their families behind
and going into harm’s way. The General had great
praise for lower ranks and non-commissioned
officers; he spoke of all their hard work and how
much officers needed and depended on them.
Everyone in the audience was so blown away and
appreciative of General MacCarley. I have heard
many wonderful speakers over the years, but no
one has ever come close to what he said. Whether
you worked in a motor pool or an office, no matter
what your MOS was, you made the sacrifice and
commitment to serve our country.

Besides the Willie Williams and Ron Handy from
VFW 2070, I was thrilled to see Chuck Keen and
Earle Sweeney from American Legion Post 44.Other
highlights included the Placement of the Wreath by
Lt. Col. Charles West, Civil Air Patrol Vice President,
and Flag Folding by G. Willie Williams, VFW Post
#2070, (It is folded thirteen times and Janine Coyne
read the significance of each fold.) There also was
recognition of the Blue Star Families and a World
War II Veteran was presented the medals he had lost.
All attendees were given a small flag.

THANK YOU to all who played a role in this
AWESOME OBSERVANCE. It meant so much to my
daughter and me, and I am sure to all the Veterans
and their families.
