TWO ARCADIA UNIFIED SCHOOLS EARN CALIFORNIA
DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL HONORS

Holly Avenue Elementary School and Longley Way Elementary School in Arcadia have been named
California Distinguished Schools. Honoring “some of California’s most exemplary and inspiring public
schools,” the California Department of Education recently released its list of schools that received the
state’s top recognition. With nearly 6,000 public elementary schools in California, less than five percent
were named Distinguished Schools for 2018.

“These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students
realize their potential, and put them on the path to achieve their dreams,” said State Superintendent of
Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.

Along with all the other Arcadia Unified School District elementary and middle schools, Holly Avenue
Elementary and Longley Way Elementary have both been bestowed this coveted recognition in the past.

“It’s very rewarding to be recognized as two of the best schools in Southern California and the entire
state,” said Arcadia Unified School District Superintendent Dr. David Vannasdall. “I’m so proud of all
of our principals, teachers, students, staff, and parents who really work together in so many innovative
ways to help our children thrive in school.”

Principals Travis Long and Teresa Oakland were joined by two of their teachers and by Dr. Vanasadall
and Dr. Tom Bruce who were honored at the Disneyland Hotel by the State Superintendent and the
California Department of Education last week.

The 2018 California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes California elementary schools that have
made exceptional gains in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the
State Board of Education. Schools that applied were eligible based on their performance and progress on
the state indicators as described on the California School Dashboard.

Next weekend is the fabulous Monrovia Days
Weekend, celebrating this great city’s birthday.
It was incorporated in 1887, and it was very
exciting for us to relocate here in the midst of
their Centennial celebration, June, 1987. We were
truly pleased that we found such a great city to call
“home”.

This year’s festivities will be awesome as always,
and are the joint effort of the City of Monrovia, the
Monrovia Unified School District and Center Stage
with the focus on youth. Thank you to ALL the
amazing sponsors who have made this possible.
Festivities include games, carnival rides, food,
pie-eating contest, great entertainment, Saturday’s
Parade and more!

Officially, festivities begin Friday, May 18 with
games, carnival rides, food and entertainment.
Prior to 6pm, the Friends of the Monrovia Library
will be having a used book sale. Saturday, May 19,
the Parade beings at 10am along Myrtle Avenue.
There will be rides, games, entertainment, and
food all day. Festivities resume Sunday at 11am.
Please visit the Monrovia Days website for more
information.

Later in the month on Memorial Day, May 28, at
10am, there will be the wonderful annual Memorial
Day Event, honoring past and present Veterans at
the Live Oak Cemetery, 200 East Duarte Road,
Monrovia. This is always an impressive event as all
branches of the military are recognized. Our local
dignitaries: city, county, state and federal officials
attend or at least send a field representative if they
have a prior commitment at another Veterans’
event. There are also guest speakers, presentation
of the colors, an explanation of the 13 folds of the
flag, and a flyover. It is a very impressive event not
to be missed.
