Duarte, Calif.—June 6, 2018 —California School of the 
Arts – San Gabriel Valley in Duarte, CA, wins the Arts 
Schools Network (ASN) 2018 New and Emerging School 
Award. ASN, the nation’s largest professional membership 
organization of specialized arts schools, presents this 
award to a promising young school in its first three years 
of development that exemplifies solid planning and 
well-defined goals, and that demonstrates promise as an 
emerging school of excellence. The award will be presented 
at the annual ASN Conference, October 23-26, 2018, in 
Orange County, Calif. 

 California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley 
(CSArts-SGV) is the first school to open as an expansion of 
Orange County School of the Arts, one of the premier arts 
schools in the country. Its mission is to provide a creative, 
challenging and nurturing environment that offers bright 
and talented students unparalleled preparation for high 
education and a profession in the arts. 

 The tuition-free, donation-dependent public charter 
school opened on August 14, 2017 as part of a mutually 
beneficial partnership with the Duarte Unified School 
District. Seventh and eighth-grade students receive 
academic instruction at Duarte K-8 schools, and are 
shuttled to CSArts-SGV for 90 minutes of daily arts 
instruction. Ninth through 12th grade students receive a 
rigorous college-preparatory education and 140 minutes 
of arts conservatory instruction every day at CSArts-
SGV. This partnership has not only revitalized arts 
education in the community, but has also helped to bring 
a diverse population to the district and stabilize student 
enrollment. 

 CSArts-SGV offers 10 arts conservatories including 
acting, classical and contemporary dance, commercial 
dance, creative writing, instrumental music, integrated 
arts, musical theatre, production and design, visual arts 
and vocal arts. Students have opportunities to participate 
in master classes, guest artist presentations, field trips and 
performances.

 Dedicated to excellence and leadership in arts 
education, Arts Schools Network, a non-profit 
professional organization founded in 1981, is a dynamic 
resource for arts schools’ leaders, innovative partners 
and members of arts education institutions. Its mission is 
to provide leaders in arts schools with quality resources,

ALL ARCADIA UNIFIED SCHOOLS NAMED TO 
CALIFORNIA HONOR ROLL

ARCADIA-- Final report card season is underway, and 
each Arcadia Unified school has made it onto the 2017 
- 2018 Educational Results Partnership (ERP) Honor 
Roll. Of the nearly 130 school districts represented on 
ERP’s Scholar Honor Roll list, Arcadia Unified is the 
only school district to have each of its schools honored 
with this distinction. 

 “What a fantastic way to end the school year,” said 
Arcadia Unified Superintendent Dr. David Vannasdall. 
“We are very grateful for this recognition. It illuminates 
the tireless work our teachers, counselors, and staff do 
to achieve our purpose of challenging and inspiring 
students to make a positive and profound impact on 
their world.” 

 Sponsored by the Campaign for Business and 
Education Excellence (CBEE), ERP conducted an 
extensive analysis of student data for every public school 
in California, a process that included examining nearly 
10,500 schools. From this research, ERP named 1,798 
public schools to its 2017 - 2018 Honor Roll. ERP’s 
Honor Roll includes Arcadia High, Baldwin Stocker 
Elementary, Camino Grove Elementary, Dana Middle 
School, First Avenue Middle School, Foothills Middle 
School, Highland Oaks Elementary, Holly Avenue 
Elementary, Hugo Reid Elementary, and Longley Way 
Elementary, making Arcadia Unified the only school 
district on the Scholar Honor Roll to have every one of 
its comprehensive schools receive this recognition. 

 “Educational success must be data-informed,” said 
Greg Jones, ERP and CBEE board chairman. “These 
Honor Roll schools and districts are improving student 
achievement, and we have the data to prove it. It’s critical 
that the business community support and promote 
educational success as today’s students are tomorrow’s 
workforce.” 

 ERP is a nonprofit organization that applies data 
science to help improve student outcomes and career 
readiness. Its Honor Roll program recognizes public 
elementary, middle, and high schools that demonstrate 
consistently high levels of student academic 
achievement, improvement in achievement over time, 
and reduction in achievement gaps.

 “These bright spot schools and districts are 
implementing programs and practices that are 
improving educational equity and accelerating student 
success, said James Lanich, Ph.D., ERP president and 
CEO. “We need to shine a spotlight on their work and 
encourage others to replicate it.”

 In addition to the ERP Honor Roll recognition, 
Arcadia Unified is one of only five districts in Los 
Angeles County to be named to the prestigious 
2018 AP® District Honor Roll, marking the second 
consecutive year that the district has received this 
honor. Additionally, Arcadia Unified’s Holly Avenue 
and Longley Way elementary schools were named as 
California Distinguished Schools for 2018. Similarly, 
Arcadia High was identified as being in the top two 
percent of the best public high schools in the state by 
Niche.com, with at least one student from the Classes 
of 2016 and 2017 being accepted into every Ivy League 
school in the nation. Among other honors, Arcadia 
Unified was also recently ranked by Niche.com as 
the Best Place to Teach in Los Angeles. For more

HOW TO MAKE A LIVING WILL

What’s the best way to go about making a living will? 
I recently retired and would like to start getting my 
affairs in order, just in case.

Dear Approaching,

Preparing a living will now is a smart decision that 
gives you say in how you want to be treated at the 
end of your life. Here’s what you should know, along 
with some resources to help you create one. 

Advance Directive

To adequately spell out your wishes regarding your 
end-of-life medical treatment you need two legal 
documents: A “living will” which tells your doctor 
what kind of care you want to receive if you become 
incapacitated, and a “health care power of attorney” 
(or health care proxy), which names a person you 
authorize to make medical decisions on your behalf 
if you become unable to. 

 These two documents are known as an “advance 
directive,” and will only be utilized if you are too ill 
to make medical decisions yourself. You can also 
change or update it whenever you please.

Do-It-Yourself

It isn’t necessary to hire a lawyer to complete 
an advance directive. There are free or low-cost 
resources available today to help you write your 
advance directive, and it takes only a few minutes 
from start to finish. 

 One that’s completely free to use is Caring 
Connections, a resource created by the National 
Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. They 
provide state-specific advance directive forms with 
instructions on their website (CaringInfo.org) that 
you can download and print for free. Or you can call 
800-658-8898 and they will mail them to you and 
answer any questions you may have. 

 Or, for only $5, an even better tool is the Five 
Wishes living will. Created by Aging with Dignity, 
a nonprofit advocacy organization, Five Wishes is a 
simple do-it-yourself document that covers all facets 
of an advance directive that will help you create a 
more detailed customized document. It is legally valid 
in 42 states and the District of Columbia. To learn

Want Legal Help

If you would rather use a lawyer, look for one who 
specializes in estate planning and health care related 
matters. The National Academy of Elder Law 
Attorneys (NAELA.org) and the National Association 
of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC.org) 
websites have directories to help you find someone. 
Costs will vary depending on the state you reside in, 
but you can expect to pay somewhere between $200 
and $500 to get one made.

Do Not Resuscitate

You should also consider including a do-not-
resuscitate order (DNR) as part of your advance 
directive, since advanced directives do little to 
protect you from unwanted emergency care like 
CPR. Doctors and hospitals in all states accept them. 
To create a DNR, ask your doctor to fill out a state 
appropriate form and sign it. 

 Another tool you should know about that will 
compliment your advance directive is the Physician 
Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST). 
Currently endorsed in 22 states with 24 more in some 
phase of development, a POLST translates your end-of-
life wishes into medical orders to be honored by your

Tell Your Family

To insure your final wishes are followed, be sure you 
tell your family members, health care proxy and 
doctor so they all know what you want. You should 
also provide copies of your advanced directive 
to everyone involved to help prevent stress and 
arguments later. 

 For convenience, there are even resources – like 
DocuBank.com and MyDirectives.com – that will let 
you and your family members store your advanced 
directive online, so you can have immediate access to 
them when you need them.
