Arroyo Seco Weekend
Lineup Includes Neil Young

Museum of California Art set to Close

Local Area
News Briefs

 In a surprise move, the
Pasadena Museum of California
Art Board of Directors voted
Monday to close down the well
know local institution –when
the current exhibition seasons
end on October 7.

 Although no official reason
was given for the closing, staff,
including Director Susana Smith
Bautista, said the Museum had
financially been struggling for
years. All nine full time and 12
part time employees will lose
their jobs officials said.

 In a statement from Board
Chairman Jim Crawford, he
said “After sixteen years of
presenting art and design
through exhibitions that explore
the unique cultural dynamic
of California, the board of
directors would like to thank
all of the museum members,
donors, contributors, lenders,
and especially our hard working,
dedicated staff who have made
this wonderful adventure
possible.”

 PMCA first opened in 2002
and had been a part of Art Night
Pasadena.

 Crawford also said “Please enjoy
our current exhibitions that
just opened last Sunday: Judy
Chicago’s Birth Project: Born
Again, Grafton Tyler Brown:
Exploring California, and Brody
Albert: Strata, and come to all of
the great programming that we
have planned for you.”

 Judy Chicago’s Birth Project:
Born Again; Between 1980 and
1985, artist Judy Chicago (b.
1939) and a team of 150 female
needleworkers completed
eighty-four textile and needle
media works that analyzed
the interrelationships among
motherhood, maternity,
femaleness, and gender.

 Grafton Tyler Brown:
Exploring California; Grafton
Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was
a painter, graphic designer,
and lithographer in the 19th
century. A talented artist and
entrepreneur, Brown was the
only documented African
American in his field in the
western United States at the
time.

 Brody Albert: Strata; Brody
Albert: Strata focuses on unseen
sites, both intimate and public,
throughout California, and the
communities that inhabit them.
Los Angeles-based artist Brody
Albert presents three works,
expanding beyond the gallery
walls of the PMCA Project
Room and into the Museum’s
lobby and stairwell.

community through initiatives
that support entrepreneurship
and STEAM education, and
attract businesses and capital
to Pasadena. The milestone
will be celebrated with a tech

 To further promote Pasadena
as a premiere location for
business, the City of Pasadena
Economic Development Team
recently developed a new ad
campaign aimed at attracting
and retaining business and
talent. In tandem with the
ad campaign, a content-rich
website has launched with
features to help site selectors
and prospective companies and
talent explore, grow and connect
with the City of Roses. Part call
to action and part tagline, www.
futureyourselfhere.com features
content such as key industries,
demographics, economic
indicators, business resources,
education, workforce, and fast
facts for Pasadena.

 In addition to Innovate
Pasadena and Economic
Development’s efforts, the
Pasadena Convention and
Visitors Bureau has partnered
with Caltech, the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory (JPL) and the
City of Pasadena to showcase
Pasadena as a destination
for science and technology
meetings. The Pasadena
Convention and Visitors
Bureau recently worked closely
with the Planetary Society and
Bill Nye the Science Guy on a

Pasadena’s innovative spirit at
institutions such as Caltech, JPL,

Friends In Deed Backpack
and School Supply Drive

 Summer vacation has started
for the kids in our community
and we hope they have a nice
break. Here at Friends In Deed,
we are already thinking about
the upcoming school year and
getting the students in our food
pantry community started out
on the right foot.

From Tuesday, July 24 to Friday,
July 27, we will hold our annual
back-to-school backpack and
school supply drive.

 For our pantry clients, the
Back-To-School Backpack and
School Supply Drive is our most
important event. The start of
a new school year is exciting,
but it can also be scary and
intimidating for kids that don’t
have the necessary backpack
and school supplies.

 Our families in the Friends
In Deed community struggle to
make ends meet every month.
Bring on the new school year,
new clothes and shoes for their
ever growing children, fees for
school programs and projects,
and a backpack full of essential
items, and a family’s stress level
can grow exponentially. And,
as we all know, kids compare
themselves to other kids. So,
our goal is to help them feel
confident that they’ve got a nice
back pack full of the supplies
they need for a successful and
enjoyable new school year. It’s
a privilege to help our Friends
In Deed kids and their families
this way.

Of course, we don’t make this
happen all by ourselves. Every
year, you, our Friends In Deed
supporters, make the Back-to-
School Backpack and School
Supply Drive a big success. Last
year we distributed more than
300 backpacks and we expect
to do the same this year. Please
join us in this effort!

If you would like to help out:

 Please deliver empty backpacks
and any supplies to Friends In
Deed, between Tuesday, July 24
and Friday, July 27.

Please avoid all red and all blue
backpacks.

This is very important to us.

 Backpacks should be sturdy
enough to handle the crazy
amount of books kids heft
around, especially our high
school students.

 The supplies needed are
recommended by the Pasadena/
Altadena area schools and the
list is attached.

We will fill them and begin
distributing on Tuesday, July 31.

 If you have any questions,
contact Tim at the Food Pantry
(pantry@friendsindeedpas.org
or 626-797-6072).

 Thank you for helping us
make sure the students, in
our community, kick off the
upcoming school year on the
right foot.
