ANNUAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST SATURDAY, SEPT. 22nd Photo by Dave Felt WOMAN’S CLUB STUNNED BY TALENTS OF GUZMÁN, ALTANY, HUNTER, SUMI, WEITZEL Six years ago the GFWC Sierra Madre Woman’s Club decided to offer our musically gifted high school academic scholarship winners an opportunity to add another musical performance to their resumes before heading off to college by sharing their talents at an informal “Summertime Ice Cream Concert Social”. This year, in addition to Sierra Madre’s only musically gifted academic scholarship winner, Alex Weitzel, we asked Suzanna Guzmán, international mezzo-soprano and an active supporter of young musical artists, if she knew anyone who might wish to add to their resumes by performing for us. Suzanna Guzmán, Maria Elena Altany (rising operatic soprano) and Doug Sumi (pianist and faculty at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, who has come to the attention of Renee Fleming and Placido Domingo), agreed to come. They were joined at the last minute by our canyon’s Chris Hunter (tenor) who previously won a GFWC San Gabriel Valley District first place musical scholarship (supported by Sierra Madre Woman’s Club.) Kudos to “Our” Alex Weitzel who completely “held his own” with this professional quartet and their outstanding performances. Suzanna and Maria Elena brought members to tears with their duet of Leo Delibes’ The Flower Duet. Both Susanna and Maria Elena’s voices individually soared, and Chris’s tenor provided a rich counterpoint, while Doug’s accompaniment complilmented all. Please get to know Woman’s Club members so you can inveigle invitations to our outstanding events. GFWC Sierra Madre Woman’s Club was founded February 1907, a few days after the town’s 500 residents incorporated. It joined the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) in 1909, and the California Federation in 1911. Through the decades SMWC continuously focused on empower-ing its members and developing our town’s civic, cultural, educational and social opportunities. YOUR AD COULD BE HERE!
