SIERRA MADRE SPOTLIGHT:
GIRL SCOUT TROOP 03395
PLANT IT AND IT WILL GROW!
By Meghan Malooly
This week's Sierra Madre Spotlight is slightly different from oth-
ers. This week it's not just one or two people who caught my eye,
but instead an entire girl scout troop! These girls not only learn life
skills and first aid, but they chose to be a part of “The Girl Scout
Tree Promise” project. By making this promise these amazing sweet
girls planted a tree at Sierra Madre Elementary School on March
13, 2022. These 17 Daisies (a girl scout term indicating their age)
have already done something at such a young age that some people
never do. They chose to do something selfless for their community.

The goal of the Tree Promise project is to plant 5 million trees by
2026. These girls will forever get to say that they were a part of that. That they were a part of making a
conscious environmental decision that will definitely change the world. I know that sounds dramatic
(which is crazy because I’m definitely not a dramatic person, I mean I cry eve-rytime I see a spider but
that's normal right?) but look at what the world has gone through in the last few years. I think COVID
has taught us that things happen that are out of our control and we can't always know what lies in the
future for us. Between deforestation and bees disappearing we don't really know what to expect when
we think of what the environment will look like in the coming years, except for the 5 million beautiful
new trees that will grow and flourish in the years to come.

These young ladies and their inspiring troop leaders (Melissa Accad, Andromeda Legorreta, and Allison
Davies) have all promised to “plant, protect and honor” the tree that they helped give life to. They
began this process by attending a meeting at Bailey Canyon where the girls were able to see examples
of gorgeous trees both new and old. From there they researched what the best type of tree would be to
be planted in our community. Knowing that we have historically had many droughts, they made the
informed decision to plant a drought tolerant tree, a Crepe Myrtle, that will survive and live a very long
and admired life in our quaint little town. I’m not the only one who respects what these daisies and
their troop leaders have done. The local nursery, Crown Valley Nursery, that they purchased the tree
from was so impressed with what they were trying to do that they gave them a discount so that they
could purchase a tree that will grow to be as big and beautiful as these kind little scouts' hearts. (I have
to admit I’m really loving that I decided to lean into the goo and say every ridiculously cheesy thing
that comes to mind, which, for me, is a lot)

These little women have done something great, for not only our community but for all communi-ties.
Not many people can say that. What I love thinking about, is if all goes as planned, they can even show
their own kids, families, spouses, cats, etc. the special tree that they planted and share with them what
it meant to them to be able to do this. They will be able to tell them all of the interesting things they
learned about trees and share that they got to paint a rock and place it around the tree to help it grow.
(Ok, I know the rock won't literally help it grow, but the thought and sentimentality behind it will) So
please everyone, next time you eat a girl scout cookie or sing one of their fun songs please think of this
troop and the amazing contribution that they made to our town. If it were up to me March 13th would
be renamed Girl Scout Troop 03395 Day, but as previously stated I do tend to be a little dramatic. :)
Thank you to all of these young daisies and their incredible troop leaders, who are clearly fantastic
role models and are doing something right, for taking your time to add another thriving tree to our
landscape!
