LA OPERA CONDUCTOR SET TO LEAD
PASADENA SYMPHONY
The Chef Knows By Peter Dills
A deli in our own Back Yard.
PASADENA SANDWICH CO.
I hope you know that we are just a few days away from National Sandwich
Day (November 3). Do Foodie's look at this as our Christmas? With a
beautiful package all wrapped and ready for eating. As a little kid I marked
my calendar! Last week I visited Connal's on E. Washington and this past
week I visited an old friend. You know it's always my intention to give you
the best of the best. There are so many restaurants in the area. I stumble
upon a few and you my readers e-mail me some from time to time and I
even scour Facebook to probe the internet for terrestrial treasures.
Is a Sandwich Shop worth an actual review? I believe so, I know many
enjoy making one at home, but I have found it tough to review most of
those homespun delights. So, where do I like to go for a good sandwich?
Two of my favorite places are in East Pasadena. One is Whole Foods. Yes,
they make a great sandwich, and you can direct the maestro to fix it any
way you like. The sandwiches run about $9.50+.
The second spot I like is The Pasadena Sandwich Shop. You can sit down or go right to the deli case. I
usually go directly to the case. This family run business has not missed a beat in the past three years,
The Pasadena Sandwich Shop has done what Jerry's Deli and Ben's Deli weren't able to do. Stay in
business. The restaurant itself is small; in fact it is located in a small office building, wedged between
a dry cleaners and a vacant real estate office.
The prices range between $9 and $14. I have yet to finish an entire sandwich. Take the challenge
yourself! Here are a few of my recent lunches: The Big PCS "B" Roast Beef - cheddar, lettuce, tomato
with Russian dressing on a French Roll; The "Chicago" Corned Beef - Pastrami, Swiss, cole slaw (it's
triple decker on rye); and again, good luck in finishing one!!! The Sheepherder - Corned Beef, Pastrami,
Turkey, Salami, Swiss - It's a triple-decker on Rye.
You can mix and match meats and breads or you can "Trust The Cook," ($16) whatever the cook feels
as a fancy for the day. My suggestion, bring a friend to share.
Platters are available, and the restaurant offers chips and soda. Dine in or take out is available.
Peter's Condiment Tip: They have spicy beaver mustard, a must!!

The Pasadena Symphony continues its 95th season
with Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 on Saturday,
November 12, at Ambassador Auditorium with
both matinee and evening performances at 2:00pm
and 8:00pm. Newly appointed LA Opera Resident
Conductor, Lina González-Granados will lead
the orchestra as the second Artistic Partner of the
season. Hailing from Cali, Colombia, González-
Granados won the 2021 Sphinx Medal of Excellence
and Solti Award, and has made quite a splash in
Los Angeles this season with her Hollywood Bowl
debut described as “a show of raw power, an aural
force to glue you to your seat” (Los Angeles Times).
The Composers Showcase opens the program with
Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, inspired by the bravery and sacrifice of the
frontline works of the Covid-19 pandemic and the heartwarming ritual of evening
serenades that sprung up to honor their heroism. International Tchaikovsky
Competition winner Alexandra Conunova will then take center stage to paint the
Romantic soundscape of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto with her impressive range of
color. The program culminates with González-Granados taking the audience on
a Romantic journey through a world of destiny, fate and shocking climaxes for a
performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony that will have everyone talking.
The Pasadena Public Health Department recommends all guests either be fully
vaccinated or obtain a negative COVID-19 test prior to entry to Ambassador
Auditorium, but it is not required. Masks are strongly recommended but not
required. As conditions in the community evolve, the Pasadena Symphony
reserves the right to update policies with a focus on public safety. For the most
up to date venue safety protocols, visit pasadenasymphony-pops.org/symphony-
covid-safety/.
The Pasadena Symphony provides a vibrant experience specially designed for
the music lover, the social butterfly or a date night out. Guests can arrive early to
enjoy the outdoor, tented Symphony Lounge, which opens 2 hours prior to show
time. A posh setting along Ambassador Auditorium’s beautiful outdoor plaza, the
Symphony Lounge offers small bites, coffee, cocktails and fine wines from The
Michero Family, before the concert and during intermission.
All concerts are held at Ambassador Auditorium, 131 South St. John Ave,
Pasadena, CA. Subscription packages start at as low as $99, with single tickets
starting at $40. Both may be purchased online at www.pasadenasymphony-pops.

Jim Osterling Says:
VOTE YES ON MEASURE PCC FOR AFFORDABLE HIGHER EDUCATION AND JOB
TRAINING
For 100 years, Pasadena City College (PCC) has provided high-quality, affordable college education
and career training for residents of all ages, including thousands of graduates from our
local schools.
With the rising cost of four-year college, many students are turning to community college for
higher education at a fraction of the cost of Cal State, University of California (UC) and private
universities.
Each year thousands of local high school graduates from Sierra Madre and throughout the West
San Gabriel Valley rely on PCC for affordable access to higher education and job training. PCC
delivers the highest transfer rate to Cal State and UC among all community colleges in California.
The College’s satellite campuses bring these benefits to residents throughout our region.
Continuing to provide affordable access to higher education and job training requires up-to-
date classrooms, labs and technology to meet the growing demand. This November there is an
important measure on the ballot to support PCC which is aptly named Measure PCC.
Measure PCC is a community college facilities improvement bond measure on the November
8, 2022 ballot that will provide locally controlled funding for Pasadena City College to upgrade
aging classrooms, labs and job training facilities to maintain affordable, high-quality education
for local students.
Most of PCC’s facilities were built over 50 years ago and need repairs and upgrades. There is
a clear need to upgrade classrooms, instructional technology and career training facilities to
better prepare students for in-demand jobs in science, healthcare, nursing, engineering and
skilled trades. A portion of the funds will be used to replace a red tagged building (The Sarafian
Science building) and upgrade 4 yellow tagged buildings that have outdated structural and
building systems.
Voting Yes on Measure PCC ensures local students, including lower and middle-income students
who can’t afford expensive university tuition, can access affordable higher education and
job training in our area.
Voting YES on Measure PCC allows PCC to continue training and educating the nurses and
healthcare professionals that serve our medical needs, the firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement
officers and first responders that keep us safe, and the skilled workers who fuel our
economy.
Voting YES on Measure PCC will:
• Replace leaky roofs, rusty plumbing and faulty electrical systems
• Keep computer systems and instructional technology up to date
• Provide modern science labs and career training facilities to prepare students for in
demand careers
• Bring buildings to current health and safety codes
• Improve access for students with disabilities
• Remove asbestos, lead pipes and hazardous materials
• Improve student safety and campus security by upgrading lighting, intruder protection
and emergency communication systems, smoke detectors and fire alarms
Measure PCC requires a clear system of fiscal accountability, including a detailed project list
showing exactly how the funds must be used. An independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee
and independent audits ensure the funds are spent as promised. Public disclosure of all spending
is mandatory. Every penny raised must be spent locally to improve our local community college
facilities. No funds from Measure PCC may be used for administrator salaries or benefits.
Measure PCC is supported by PCC students, teachers, the PCC Foundation and the entire Board
of Trustees. Respected current and past local elected leaders including Congressman Adam
Schiff, Congresswoman Judy Chu, Senator Anthony Portantino, Assemblymember Chris Holden,
County Supervisor Kathryn Barger and former Senator Carol Liu all support Measure PCC.
Please refer to the website for more endorsements and information. https://www.yesonpcc.org/
Please join me in voting YES on PCC on or before November 8 to maintain affordable access to
higher education and job training.
