DAY OF THE DEAD:

A Mayan Approach to Closure

CHRISTOPHER Nyerges

[Nyerges is the author of “Til Death Do Us Part?”, of which this is an excerpt, selected for this time of
the year. The book is available as an e-book, or hard copy, from Amazon, or from www.SchoolofSelf-
Reliance.com].

In 2010 I went to Mexico‘s Yucatan peninsula to learn about the Maya culture and spirituality
under the tutelage of Miguel Angel Vergara Calleros.

Among other things, I was told that Vergara does “readings” with people based upon
Mayan beliefs. I didn‘t know precisely what a “reading” was, but I was urged me to take
advantage of this opportunity. I had to give Vergara‘s assistant my birthday the day before
in order for Vergara to prepare.

I was also asked to determine my personal goal, and to come up with pertinent questions. I decided that
my goal was to find peace with my wife who had died two years earlier. I still talked to her daily, and I still
missed her very much. Another goal was to live my destiny. Thus, my question was: “what are my steps to
living more fully my life goal?” I felt that I could, and should, be able to determine these things on my own,
but I still wanted the feedback from Vergara.

After lunch, I met with Vergara in his Campeche, his office, a table by the window in the hotel Tucan
Siho-Playa.

He prepared a document based on my birthdate. He pointed to the symbols on his black and white image as
he explained each. Plus, he had a small stack of cards and upon each was drawn a Mayan symbol.

He went into great detail about my character and personality, details which I share in my book, “On the Road
to 2012.”

Then, after his reading, I ask, “How do I find peace with Dolores? How do I fulfill my life‘s destiny?”

His answer was to point to the Mayan symbols, one by one, and to create the answer by their entirety.

He first points to a symbol, Ok, which he says represents “prints,” which refers to when I walk, footprints.

Next, he point to a symbol, Kan, which represents wisdom and knowledge.

Next, Ix, which refers to coming and doing ceremonies with Mother Earth.

Then, Eb, which means ―that is the way.

And finally, Akbal, which means to reconnect with your pure essence and be in peace inside you.

He smiles, and tells me that my answer is there. It is very obvious, really. It is the answer to everything. To
be who I am, or who I am to be, and to fulfill my dharma or destiny, I walk with wisdom, or seeking wisdom,
and join in the ceremonies that connect me with my self. I will know that this is the way, and this will help
me to reconnect with my own higher Self, and be at peace. Yes.

Vergara smiled, and nodded. “Yes,” he said, “go up higher, like the eagle, to see the spiritual geometry of
the problem. See the way in, and the way out. Then, let your jaguar essence go down and find the way out
with calmness and without emotional attachment.”

Next he tells me how to perform a special ceremony to find peace with
Dolores. Vergara tells me to dig a hole, around 3 feet wide, maybe 2 feet
deep, in a special place. I do this by myself, but if I choose to do so later,
I can do it again and invite others to join.

I needed to obtain the following items as offerings: Honey, Seeds, Oils,
Bread, Chocolate, Incense.

I was to put all of these items around the hole, and then talk to Dolores. I
ask for healing. I say words to the effect of: “Heart of Earth, I am doing
this ceremony in your name. Please heal my heart and mind from my
painful memories.” I was told to say whatever else I feel is appropriate.

When done, I would put all the items in the hole and bury them.

Then I was to be at peace, let Dolores be with me, and honor her. “But
you need to remember that you are incarnated,” said Vergara. “Go and
teach and share and honor, and devote these things to Dolores.” … He
told me that I could consult with him in the weeks that followed if I had
questions.

We hugged when it was done, and when I returned home, I was determined
to do these ceremonies. I did grow roses and keep roses in water
in my room some of the time.

But it wasn‘t until the following November – November of 2011 – that I finally dug the hole and did the
ceremony he described.

I did the ceremony as Vergara prescribed. There were no psychic appearances and no special clouds or
winds that spoke to me. However, within the next three days, I felt a feeling of calm and peace settle upon
me, as if the ceremony had in deed done its job to free each of us to continue on our needed path. I thanked
Dolores for the life we had, and I thanked Vergara for his guidance.

Pet of the Week

Just like his Addams Family's namesake, Fester
is missing a small amount of hair. Unlike the
famous follicularly challenged Uncle, this Fester
is likely to have a luxurious coat when his fur
grows in.

Fester is a two year-old shepherd mix, and an
active one! He loves exploring the play yard and
chasing toys. His fetch game needs improvement
though, as the chasing is much more fun! His
favorite one so far is the ball, but then he finds a
rope toy, no, wait, it's the stuffed toy!

This Fester cannot generate electricity, but it shouldn't shock you that he is a
really friendly and fun dog and will be a great addition to any family!

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter,
microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-
wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody
bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.
View photos of adoptable pets and schedule an adoption appointment at
pasadenahumane.org. Adoptions are by appointment only, and new adoption
appointments are available every Sunday and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters
by phone calls or email.

FAMILY MATTERS

HOW AN ESTATE PLAN CAN PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS
& FAMILY

If you’re a small business owner, you’ve most likely dedicated significant
time and energy to creating – and executing - a vision for your
business, and even writing up a detailed business plan for the growth of your business. Yet far fewer
business owners put the same effort into planning for their company’s continued success following
their retirement, incapacity, or death.

However, not planning for the future of your business once you are no longer around to run the
company could have disastrous consequences for you, your team, your clients/customers, and your
family. And of all the potential risks facing your business, the two that are impossible to avoid are
your incapacity and death.

Given this fact, creating an estate plan for the continued success of your business should you
become incapacitated or when you die is just as critical as any other planning you do for your
business, if not more so. The best part is that when you create an estate plan for your business, or
a succession plan, it makes your company more resilient, less dependent on you overall, and can
greatly improve your ability to take vacations, and have the freedom from your business you probably
desire.

WHAT IS A BUSINESS SUCCESSION PLAN?

A business succession plan is the term for an estate plan for your business. And that plan will
include several strategies, such as life insurance for liquidity, a buy-sell agreement (covering the
buyout of partners or other shareholders), and it may also include a trust to spell out the future
management of your business and to avoid the totally unnecessary court process called probate,
which could interrupt your company’s continued operation and even cause the loss of everything
you’ve worked so hard to build.

A WILL ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH.

When it comes to creating an estate plan, most people typically think of a will. While it’s possible
to leave your company to someone in your will, it’s far from the ideal option. That’s because,
upon your death, all assets passed through a will must first go through probate. And the cost, time,
and complexity involved when the court makes decisions about your business assets is completely
unnecessary.

During probate, the court oversees your will’s administration to ensure your assets (including
your business) are distributed according to your wishes. But probate can take years to complete,
and it is quite expensive, which can seriously disrupt your cash flow and your company’s operation.
What’s more, probate is a public process, potentially leaving your business affairs open to your
competitors.

Furthermore, a will only goes into effect upon your death, so it would do nothing to protect your
business should you become incapacitated by illness or injury before your eventual death. In fact,
if you only have a will in place (or have no estate plan at all), in the event of your incapacity, your
family will have to petition the court for guardianship in order to manage your business as well as
your other personal and financial affairs.

Like probate, the court process associated with guardianship in the event of your incapacity can
be long and costly. And in the end, whether it’s a family member or professional guardian agency,
there’s no guarantee the individual the court ultimately names as guardian would be the best person
to run your company.

YOU NEED A COMPREHENSIVE SUCCESSION PLAN.

Given the drawbacks associated with a stand-alone-will, a much better way to ensure your business’
continued success is through a comprehensive business succession plan. This can be a part of
your own personal estate plan, or it can be a completely separate plan, which closely coordinates
with your personal plan so as to provide the maximum protection for your business and your
family.

Best,
