WALKING SIERRA MADRE - The Social Side

basic ingredients of a truly merry

“I decided not to buy new clothes this
Christmas. Online shopping doesn’t
count!”

We are tired of Thanksgiving leftovers.
We’ve had all the turkey sandwiches
we want and are thinking how good
a big fresh salad would be. I did make
the cranberry sauce bread that was in
last week’s Walking Sierra Madre and,
I have to tell you, it was fabulous! Easy
and so good. We are ready to start
thinking about Christmas; which is
now three weeks away!
Saw an interesting article by Mike Snider from USA Today: Black Friday Online Spending
Record Set! Consumers spent a record $9.12 billion (yes, billion) while online shopping
Friday after Thanksgiving. Nearly half of online sales were made over smartphones,
up from 44% last year. Sierra Madreans didn’t do that, they went to the delightful Sierra
Madre Winter Festival and shopped there, enjoyed the music and seeing friends, visiting
the crafters, seeing Santa and enjoying a wonderful day right here at home. And the snow
slide! That was incredible and what a great idea. Hopefully, that is an innovation that is
here to stay.
Many years ago, before there were smartphones, online shopping and Black Friday, John
and I would hop in our little red VW Bug, park in the Fedco lot there on Colorado Blvd.
and buy one of everything in the toy department. I’d wrap it all and the children were
delighted. Hot Wheels was especially big at that time. Lacking sufficient courage and
strength to tackle the late-night Black Friday sales, I’ve probably missed out on some
amazing bargains. This year I’m making my list and checking it twice and I don’t care
who’s been naughty or nice, all children in my life are getting an Amazon gift card.
Christmas is totally up at my house and my neighbors have beautiful lights galore. This
year I have three light-festooned deer nodding their heads (this week’s picture) in my
front yard. My trees are fake, yes, but real trees are a little beyond me these days. I’ve
told this story before, but when we were first married, John drove us in my little blue
Ford Falcon down to the Los Angeles railroad yards where Christmas trees were being
offloaded from the trains and we bought our first tree there and tied it on top of my car.
I don’t remember how much it was, probably not much, as we didn’t have much to spend,
but it was beyond beautiful. Of course, time has gilded it, made it taller and fuller, but,
dear friends and neighbors, it was the most beautiful one we ever had. My fake trees from
Michael’s Craft Store look great, all pre-wired with lights and I’ve covered them with ornaments
the children have made over the year. I have a picture of three-year-old Crissy,
taken in her Sunday School class and mounted in a star. We laminated it and that’s the
first thing I put on. Jessie made some really cute elves out of paper bags at school. These
are my favorites. I expect you have your favorites, too; probably the same sort of things.
“That First Noel’s come ‘round again,
Just like it does each year,
To tell us it’s Christmas, finally it’s Christmas,
Joyfully it’s Christmas,
The best time of the year, the best time of the year...”
This particular song goes on to tell us that the tree is in the window, the wreath is on the
door, and about a million ornaments are scattered on the floor! Most probably you’re way
past that stage, the tree is up and gorgeous. You finally untangled the lights and put the
angel up on top. But here’s the question you’ll be facing in a few days when the presents
are all unwrapped and everything you got everybody was exactly what they wanted (an
Amazon gift card): Why is it that putting up Christmas decorations is so much more fun
than taking them down? Also, why is it that the Christmas decorations that seem so few
and so light as you take them out of the plastic crates have doubled (like wire hangers) in
size and tripled in weight and you can’t remember when on earth you carried all those
to the living room.
Playing Christmas music and rediscovering each precious Christmas item is such fun
and then deciding where to put each one is an adventure. I’m especially partial to all my
little lighted houses. My mother started collecting them many years ago and gave her
collection to me. I have added to it over the years and now think I have about twenty of
them. They look fantastic on top of the bookcases, and the tall cabinet. The most interesting
part of putting these things up is, of course, not falling off the ladder. The second
most interesting thing is figuring out how to get them all plugged in somewhere.
The song goes on to say:
“But that’s not the reason we celebrate the season...
Oh, it’s that baby in the manger,
Christ child in the manger,
Mary kneeling by his side,
Joseph beaming down with pride.
Peace on earth, good will to men,
We celebrate that night again.”
(Deanne Davis/David Wheatley from “Star of Wonder”)
Whatever kind of tree you have, fake or fantastically real that fills the house with
that marvelous evergreen smell, I hope that decorating it brings you joy and pleasant
memories.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given…” Is. 9:6

Christmas is just a few short weeks away and my book:
“Sunrises and Sunflowers Speak Hope”
Would be a really nice gift for everyone you know. It’s on Amazon.com“Star of Wonder” a delightful Christmas Kindle story is there, too.
