Director of Public Works, Tony
Olmos, announced this week
that the department will host
a second community outreach
and engagement for the Sierra
Madre Median Enhancement
Project and Master Plan, which
is currently in early design
phase, on June 20. Several new
concepts have been developed,
including landscape design,
native and drought-tolerant
plant palette preferences, and
water capture enhancements
that Public Works intends to
showcase to the community
for feedback before moving
forward with 60% design. A
flyer for the event is attached
and can also be accessed on
the City’s project website at bit.
ly/SierraMadreMedian. The
design concepts and video
footage will be posted on the
City’s project website for anyone
who is unable to attend the
event.
A Master Plan is being developed
to reimagine City medians
along Sierra Madre Boulevard
from Michillinda Avenue west
to the 210 Freeway. As part
of the Master Plan, the Sierra
Madre Median Enhancement
Project encompasses the
medians between Michillinda
Avenue and East Washington
Boulevard and aims to develop a
contiguous stormwater capture
project that improves water
quality, enhances local water
supply and provides urban
greening enhancements to this
heavily urbanized corridor.
An initial outreach event was
similarly hosted at Victory Park
Community Center in March
to allow community members
to identify priorities for the
medians and solicit input on
community desires for the
corridor both near and long term
(photos attached from event).
The event was well received with
over 60 community members in
attendance, enthusiastic to see
this long-desired community
project fully realized. Full
design plans for the median
enhancements project and
conceptual designs for the larger
Master Plan are scheduled to be
completed in December 2024.
Tournament of Roses
Celebrates Red Rose Day
In celebration of Red Rose
Day, volunteer Members of
the Tournament of Roses
Association brightened the
day of hundreds of people
Wednesday by surprising
them with long-stemmed
red roses. This act of
spreading cheer embodies
the community spirit of the
Tournament of Roses.
The red rose, the iconic
symbol of the Rose Parade
and Rose Bowl Game, has
long been recognized as a
symbol of love, but it also
symbolizes gratitude – and
it is with gratitude that the
“White Suiter” volunteer
Members literally took to the
streets of Los Angeles and
Pasadena.
“We are thrilled to celebrate
Red Rose Day by bringing a
little joy and beauty to people’s
lives,” said Tournament of
Roses President, Ed Morales.
“A simple rose can convey so
much – love, appreciation,
and a reminder to stop and
enjoy the moment.”
Hundreds of commuters at
Union Station were surprised
by the gift of a long-stem
red rose, as were people
visiting the Old Town area of
Pasadena. “It’s a small token
of our gratitude to the people
throughout the community
who support us each New
Year, and we hope that it
invites people to stop and,
of course, smell the roses,”
Morales said.
