A Message from the Sierra Madre Police Chief Gus Barrientos

As your Police Chief, I am 
committed to ensuring the 
safety and security of our 
community. Recently, we 
have observed a concerning 
trend in residential 
burglaries and thefts, and 
I want to bring this to your 
attention to enhance our 
collective awareness and 
proactive measures.

Incidents of Residential Burglaries:

Over the past few months, while we have not seen an increase 
in residential burglaries in our community there has been a 
noticeable increase in surrounding neighborhoods and change 
in modus operandi. These crimes not only result in the loss 
of valuable property but also significantly impact the sense of 
security within our community. It is crucial for all of us to stay 
informed and take necessary precautions to protect our homes 
and loved ones.

Changes in Suspects Modus Operandi:

It is revealed that burglars and/or thieves are becoming more 
sophisticated in their methods. One notable change is the use of 
concealed surveillance cameras by suspects to monitor potential 
targets. These cameras are often hidden in inconspicuous 
locations, allowing criminals to gather information about 
homeowners’ routines, security systems, and potential entry 
points. This evolving tactic underscores the need for heightened 
vigilance and preventive measures.

Steps to Enhance Home Security:

Here are some practical steps you can take to enhance the 
security of your home and deter potential burglars and/or 
thieves:

1.Install Visible Surveillance Cameras: While suspects may
use concealed cameras, having visible security cameras 
around your property can act as a strong deterrent. Ensure
these cameras are strategically placed to cover all entry points.

2.Strengthen Entry Points: Invest in high-quality locks for
doors and windows. Reinforce sliding doors with a security
bar or rods, and consider installing deadbolts on all exterior
doors.

3.Outdoor Lighting: Adequate outdoor lighting can
discourage burglars from approaching your home. Motion-
activated lights are particularly effective in startling intruders 
and alerting homeowners.

4.Continuous Neighborhood Watch Program: Join our
neighborhood watch program to stay informed. Being part
of a vigilant community can significantly reduce the risk of
crime. Share information and report any suspicious activities
to the police immediately.

5. Home Security Systems: Consider installing a comprehensive
home security system. Modern systems offer features such as
alarms, remote monitoring, and notifications, providing an
added layer of protection.

6.Be Mindful of Social Media: Avoid sharing details of your
travel plans or daily routines on social media platforms.
Burglars often exploit such information to target homes when
residents are away.

7.Vacation Checks: If you plan to be away from home for an
extended period, notify the police department of your travel
dates via email or in person. We offer a vacation check service
where officers or volunteers will periodically check your
property to ensure it remains secure. This added vigilance can
help deter potential burglars.

this rise in residential burglaries. We are increasing patrols 
in affected areas, enhancing our investigative techniques, 
and collaborating with community members to gather 
valuable information. However, we cannot do this alone. Your 
cooperation and proactive efforts are essential in creating a 
safer environment for everyone.
