You’re lacing up your running/walking shoes, 
ready to get moving, when you realize you forgot 
your headphones. Suddenly, you feel less excited. 
Why is that? Because music has a way of 
transforming exercise from a chore into a full-
on experience. Whether it’s the heart-pounding 
beats of a pop song or the steady rhythm of a 
classic rock tune, the right playlist can make all 
the difference in how we feel and perform during 
a workout.

But what’s really happening when we press 
play? How does music work on our bodies and 
minds? Find out why your playlist might just be 
the most powerful tool in your fitness arsenal.

It’s science. Researchers have been studying 
the connection between music and exercise for 
years, and the results are clear: music has the 
power to boost performance. It’s not just about 
feeling pumped up—it’s about how our brains and bodies respond to sound.

When we listen to music, especially songs we love, our brains release dopamine, the 
"feel-good" chemical. This makes us happier and more motivated, even when we’re 
tackling something as challenging as a tough workout. The beats and rhythms in 
music also help us synchronize our movements. Think about how your feet naturally 
fall into step with the tempo of a song. This rhythmic connection can make 
exercises like running or cycling feel easier and more efficient.

Studies have shown that people who listen to music while exercising tend to work 
out longer and harder than those who don’t. Why? Because music distracts us from 
fatigue and discomfort. When you’re focused on the lyrics or the melody, you’re less 
likely to notice your legs getting tired or your heart pounding.

Not all music has the same effect, though. The key is to match the tempo and energy 
of the songs to the type of workout you’re doing.

For activities like sprinting, HIIT, or intense cardio, fast-paced music with a strong 
beat is ideal. Songs with 140–180 beats per minute (BPM) can help you push 
through those challenging sets. Think of upbeat tracks like "Good 4 U" by Olivia 
Rodrigo or "Sk8er Boi" by Avril Lavigne.

If you’re going for a long run or cycling session, songs with a moderate BPM (120–
140) can help you maintain a consistent pace. Artists like David Guetta singing 
“Titanium” or Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” often hit this sweet spot.

For stretching or winding down, slower, soothing tracks are best. Songs around 
60–100 BPM, like those by Norah Jones, Sam Smith or instrumental pieces, help 
your heart rate come down while keeping you relaxed.

Even professional athletes rely on music to stay motivated. Olympic swimmer Michael 
Phelps famously listened to high-energy electronic music before competing, 
using it to get into the zone. Serena Williams has spoken about how music was a 
key part of her pre-match routine. She listened to upbeat songs to get her energized 
and ready to compete. Some of her favorite artists include Beyoncé and Prince. The 
world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, is well-known for his love of reggae music, particularly 
Bob Marley. He listens to music to help him get into a positive and confident 
mindset before his races.

Ready to get started with making your own playlists? Choose music that inspires 
you. Nostalgic songs or tracks with powerful lyrics can create an emotional connection, 
giving you that extra boost of energy when you need it most.

Begin with a familiar track that immediately puts you in the mood to move. Think 
of it as your warm-up hype song. If you’re doing intervals alternate song speeds so 
that strengthening exercises are done to slower songs while cardio work is done to 
faster, energizing songs. If you’re going for a run or doing something that stays at 
the same pace and intensity, make your playlist songs gradually get faster. You won’t 
even notice you’re moving faster and working harder. Choose songs that make you 
feel happy or powerful. And avoid playlist fatigue by adding new songs or rotating 
old favorites.

As much as music can enhance workouts, there are times when silence or natural 
sounds might be a better choice. For example, if you’re practicing mindfulness during 
yoga or running on a quiet trail, the absence of music can help you stay present 
and in tune with your body.

Music and exercise enhance each other. The right playlist can elevate your experience 
and help you reach new levels of performance. So, next time you work out 
make sure your playlist is as ready as you are. Because sometimes, the difference 
between a good workout and a great one is just a beat away.
