FITNESS CHALLENGES

You know that friend who always says, “I 
should work out, but…” and then trails off 
with an excuse? Maybe it’s “I don’t have time,” 
or “I’ll start next month,” or even, “I just don’t 
like exercise.” Well, getting them to move more 
might be easier than you think.

The secret? Make it fun. People stick with things 
they enjoy, and fitness challenges add just the 
right mix of motivation, competition, and 
accountability. The key is to keep it light-hearted 
and social while encouraging movement. Here 
are four challenges guaranteed to get even the 
most stubborn couch potato moving.

One of the easiest fitness challenges to get 
people hooked is the “7-Day Step Challenge.” 
It’s simple, measurable, and doesn’t require any 
special equipment. Plus, everyone loves beating 
their own best score. Entice your friends or 
family to hit a step goal for a week, like 8,000 or 10,000 steps a day. If that sounds too 
easy, aim higher. Use a step-tracking app or a smartwatch to keep score and make it 
competitive by offering a small prize (coffee on the winner?). Or turn it into a team 
effort: If your group reaches a combined goal of 70,000 steps, everyone gets a reward.

This test works well because it doesn’t require gym equipment or a complicated 
workout routine. It’s just about getting out there and moving, and it’s something 
everyone can fit into their day. Plus, people feel better when they move, making it 
easier to keep the streak alive.

The “Try Something New Challenge” keeps things exciting. People get bored doing 
the same workouts, so trying something new can reignite their interest in fitness. 
Each person in your group picks a workout activity that no one else has done before. 
It could be rock climbing, a dance class, pickleball, or even goat yoga (yes, it’s a thing). 
Set a deadline. Then everyone has to try their new activity within a month. Bonus 
points if you do it together! You can even make it into a day trip or outing and share 
your experiences afterward.

Trying new activities breaks the monotony of regular exercise. If people feel like 
they’ve done everything already, they might not be as excited to work out. The “Try 
Something New Challenge” gives them a chance to try something they might not have 
considered before. It could even become their new favorite way to move.

For those who need more structure to stay on track, the “30-Day Streak Challenge” is 
perfect. It’s all about building a habit without feeling overwhelmed. Once people start 
a streak, they won’t want to break it, especially when they can track their progress. 
Pick a simple fitness goal, like doing 5 minutes of exercise every day for 30 days. It 
could be stretching, push-ups, or even a brisk walk. The trick is to choose something 
easy to commit to every day. Over time, the goal becomes part of your routine, and 
the 30-day streak helps solidify the habit.

This task is great for people with busy schedules or who find it hard to stick to an 
exercise plan. It doesn’t matter if you’re not working out for hours each day; the goal 
is consistency. Once you’ve completed your 30-day streak, you can ask your group to 
extend it or increase the daily exercise time. It’s all about building lasting habits.

Finally, try the “Workout for a Cause Challenge.” People are more likely to commit 
when their efforts benefit someone else. Find a cause that motivates your group, like a 
charity that donates meals for every mile walked, or a virtual 5K that raises money for 
a good cause (how about to help recent fire victims?). Or pledge to donate a certain 
amount for every workout completed, and at the end of the month, pick a local charity. 
Suddenly, working out isn’t just about you but about helping others. Not only do you 
get your workout in, but you’re also making a positive impact in the world.

This motivator adds an extra layer of purpose to your workouts. When people know 
their effort is going toward something bigger than themselves, they’re more likely to 
stick with it. The accountability of knowing their workouts are benefiting others can 
make fitness feel more meaningful.

The key to getting others excited about exercise isn’t to lecture them about fitness. Just 
make it social, fun, and rewarding. Challenges work because they add competition 
and accountability to keep people engaged. You may be surprised when your friend 
who “hates” working out might just be the one pushing you to keep going by the end 
of it.
