LA SALLE STUDENTS CREATE CARDS TO SEND TO JUVENILE HALL
Pasadena, CA - Under the direction
of La Salle High School’s Librarian,
Delia Swanner, the December Café
Bibliothèque, (student library social) in
the Blakeslee Library, had students create
Holiday cards for the young adults in
Juvenile Hall.
For the past 25 years, Just People
has visited kids in Sylmar Juvenile Hall
on Christmas Day and passed-out
over 2,000 handmade Holiday cards.
“We appreciated La Salle’s contribution
since the giving of your time and spirit
by making these cards helps the teens
in juvenile hall, some of whom never
get visitors except from our group
on Christmas Day,” said a Just People
spokesperson. La Salle, a participant since
2005, contributed 70 cards made by over
55 students in December. Just People is
a non-profit group that tries to offer some
hope and encouragement to some of the
many boys and girls currently detained in
our area’s juvenile detention centers.

PASADENA UNIFIED
INVITES COMMUNITY
TO FIRST CHOICE
FESTIVAL
Families encouraged to explore
options, find best educational fit
Pasadena, CA --- Making the choice
on where to send a child to school
can be a daunting and stressful task
for families. To make this decision
a little easier, the Pasadena Unified
School District (PUSD) will be hosting
the inaugural First Choice Festival
January 14, 2014 from 4:30 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m. at the PUSD Education
Center, 351 South Hudson Avenue
(Corner of Hudson Avenue and Del
Mar Boulevard), in Pasadena. The
First Choice Festival will be a one
stop shop for parents and the community
to meet and speak to representatives
from every PUSD school.
Whether families are considering a
PUSD signature program school or
simply want to learn more about the
campus down the block, this festival
is an opportunity to find the best
educational fit for each individual
family.
“I would like to invite residents
of Altadena, Pasadena and Sierra
Madre to the festival to learn more
about their public schools and the
exciting programs that are being offered,”
said PUSD Superintendent
Jon R. Gundry. “The First Choice
Festival will showcase the multitude
of educational options in PUSD, including
programs that prepare students
with global and enduring skills
for the 21st century.”
At the festival there will be information
and presentations about PUSD
signature programs such as Mandarin
and Spanish Dual Language Immersion,
International Baccalaureate,
College & Career Pathways, and
the district’s new magnet schools.
There will also be activities for kids,
information about preschool and
afterschool programs, and free immunizations
required for students
to attend school (for uninsured or
Medi-Cal eligible children). Festival
attendees can enter a raffle to win
a family membership to Kidspace
Museum or a full scholarship to the
Pasadena Educational Foundation
Summer Enrichment Program.
The timing of the festival coincides
with the district’s Open Enrollment
process which runs from January
9-February 6. Open Enrollment is
an opportunity for district students
to apply to a school other than the
one they attended in 2013-2014 or
for those enrolling in PUSD for the
first time and interested in applying
to a school other than their neighborhood
school. Staff will be available
at the festival to help parents
complete the online Open Enrollment
application. Open Enrollment
applications can also be submitted
online at openenrollment.info.
More information about the festival
will be posted at gopusd.com/firstchoice
or call 626-396-3606.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
A MADEA CHRISTMAS
While this was definitely not
high on my to-see list of movies
this holiday season, I’m glad that
I saw it. Not all Madea movies
do the best at delivering a strong,
emotional point but this one
does it very well.
When her daughter Lacey
(Tika Sumpter) won’t come
home for Christmas, the overprotective
mother Eileen (Anna
Maria Horsford) enlists the help
of Madea (Tyler Perry) to get
her down to her country home.
When she arrives unexpectedly,
she adds stress to an already
nerve racking situation that has
been building in the town: their
annual Christmas jubilee may
not happen and the only was to get the money to save it, the local
school, and the town is to get money from Lacey’s old boyfriend.
This movie handles a very delicate topic (racism in the
modern age) very well. It looks the practice right in the face and
says ‘This is not good. Stop it.’ Madea’s straightforward and brutally
honest approach to situations not only progresses the plot
at a good pace but also keeps annoying characters in line and the
audience laughing. While it’s not the best comedy ever, A Madea
Christmas is a charming holiday movie that has a message of acceptance
with a nice and warm Christmas theme at its heart.
