The Winners Circle appears to be the 
home of the Sierra Madre Rose Float 
Association. For the 8th time in the 
last 9 years, the Association has put together 
an award winning float. 

 The 2014 entry, “Catching The Big 
One” was selected as the winner of the 
Mayor’s Trophy - “The Most Outstanding 
City Entry National or International”. 
The float, which was designed by 
Award Winning creator Charles Meier, 
was derived from the Tournament of 
Roses parade’s overall theme, “The 
Sky’s The Limit” depicts a small fishing 
boat looking for the big catch. The 
line was cast by the SMRFA Princesses 
Hannah Latham, who is a sophomore 
at Maranatha High School, Madison 
Vleck, who is a sophomore at PHS, and 
Tessa Brandstater, who is a senior at 
PHS.

The float was approximately 42 ft long 
and 25 ft high.

 Float designer, Charles Meier, who has 
been with the SMRFA for most of the 
last 9 years, is the Creative Director for 
his own company, Paradiso Designs. 
According to his website, “He first fell 
in love with the Tournament of Roses® 
at age 9 after seeing the parade from 
the grandstands for the first time. That 
day he went home and began sketching 
floats. Four years later, Charles set 
the record as the youngest designer in 
Tournament history, creating his first 
float at age 13. Over the last two decades, 
Charles earned awards for 90% 
of his designs—the highest prize-winning 
rate in the industry.” This year, in 
addition to the Sierra Madre float, his 
creations also won the Extraordinaire 
Trophy for the Singpoli Group and the 
Grand Marshal’s Trophy for the Public 
Storage Float.

 Congratulations are also in order for 
all of the hard working volunteers who 
spent countless hours painstakingly 
painting, gluing and placing millions 
of seeds and flowers on the float. Also 
included in the thanks are Bob Young, 
President of the SMRFA and all of the 
hard working volunteers, including 
Dick and Kaye Sappington, Donna 
Sutcliffe, Barbie Bevington, Gwen Robertson, 
David and Bonnie Colcher, just 
to name a few. 

 So what’s next for this award winning 
organization? Breaking down the big 
fish and begin working on the 2015 entry.

FORMER MAYOR JOSH MORAN WILL NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION

 In a surprise announcement just 
before press time, former Sierra 
Madre Mayor and current City 
Council member Josh Moran notified 
the Mountain Views News 
that he would not be seeking a 
second term on the city council.

 The announcement comes just 
a day after the City Clerk Nancy 
Shollenberger released the names 
of the five candidates that have 
“pulled papers” as of January 2nd 
for seats on the City Council. 

 Moran, who grew up in Sierra 
Madre and was first elected to 
the council in 2010. He served as 
Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem during his tenure on the council. 
He cited personal reasons for his decision not to run again. 
Says Moran, 

 “As election time rolls around again, I would like to let you 
know that I will not be seeking reelection for a second term. 
Though it has been an honor and a privilege to represent the 
citizens of this town for the past three and a half years, the 
birth of my son last June has obviously changed my priorities, 
and I do not want to miss out on the joys and trials of raising 
a child. 

 Being on council and working full time was already like spinning 
plates; I don’t need to tell you what happens when you 
throw a child onto that stage. And so, as I turn my attention 
from the public good to the good of my family, I want to wish 
those who are running the best of luck, and urge them to continue 
to strive for what is best for the entire 
community, and for our City’s future.”

 Moran’s decision comes almost two weeks 
before incumbents are required to file for re-
election. Current Councilman Chris Koerber 
has already announced his intent to run. 
He will be seeking the full four year term, as 
he currently sits in the unexpired term for 
former Mayor Joe Mosca who resigned when 
his family moved to London. Koerber ran 
for the remaining two years of Mosca’s term 
and won.

 No word on when current Mayor Nancy 
Walsh will be filing her re-election papers.
