ROTARY AWARDS OUR FINEST TEACHERS FOR 2014-2015
John Steinbeck said, “ I
have come to believe that
a great teacher is a great
artist and that there are as
few as there are any other
great artists. Teaching might
even be the greatest of the
arts since the medium is the
human mind and spirit.”
Sierra Madre Rotary
honors teachers with
Breakfast, recognition
to all the other schools
and a monetary award. A
plaque is displayed at each
of the schools with the
teacher’s name and year in
perpetuity.
This year the honors were presented as follows:

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD REVIEW
ST. RITA SCHOOL CELEBRATES STUDENTS WHO RECEIVED THEIR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
In early May, the 2nd grade class at St. Rita and
other school-aged parishioners completed their
journey towards Eucharist. The religious education
a student receives prepares them for sacraments, and
puts a strong emphasis on Catholic community. St.
Rita encourages all students to live and learn with a
Christian attitude. The preparation for this event is
the foundation of the early religious curriculum at
the school.
Throughout the year, the students participate in
several events leading up to First Holy Communion.
They learn about the different parts of Mass and how
to become active participants and not just observers.
Students participate in two retreats with their
parents prior to their first Reconciliation and First
Holy Communion. The focus of these retreats is for
families to have a meaningful faith-filled experience
within the school community. Prior to First Holy
Communion, the children and their families attend
the Agape breakfast. They join together to make
bread and to break bread together. Each step in the process is tied into a
reflection shared between parent and child through sharing a meal together
and spending time in prayer.
Following are the St. Rita School students we honor this year. Caitlin
Andrews, Eric Baham, Madeline Barber, Jordan Boskovich, Matea Cerielik-
Weeks, Jacqueline Chavarry, John Crane, Grace Culver, Zachary DeLeon,
Dorothy Driscoll, Christine Ellis, Maya Eriksson, Dylan Gallardo, Abigail
Gleason, Lauren Kilpatrick, Caroline Krappman, Emily Lavin, Theresa
Mariz Magkawas, Tristan Morse, James Nolan, Nora O’Reilly, Lauren
Oseguera, Holly Rettig, Joseph Sandoval, Dane Shepard, Luke Smith,
Morgan Sullivan, Alexander Wallace, Emily White, Jarett Smith, and Jake
Smith.
Having not seen any of the previous ‘Mad Max’ films, I only had
what people told me about the franchise to go off of. I could tell
that this film had a lot of expectations to live up to; it has many
avid fans who hoped that it would succeed, as well as all of the
people who had seen any of the visually stunning trailers. But
does this movie, which has been in development for over 25
years, have any chance of living up to the originals?
Max (Tom Hardy) has been living alone in the post-apocalyptic
world of the future for a long time, alone and haunted by his
memories of the past. When a gang of mysterious drivers capture
Max, he gets unknowingly involved in a revolution that will
completely a small, unstable society of humans and the future of
humanity.
‘Fury Road’ not only succeeds on a visual level, but on an
intellectual one as well; it’s not just another post-apocalyptic
movie. The amazing cinematography makes the film play as if
you were actually there, watching things unfold in real life. The
story and character development come naturally, with no plot
twists that seem illogical or unrealistic. ‘Fury Road’ is what many
directors have tried to create but failed at: an intelligent action
movie.
