10 FOOD AND DRINK
“Summertime, and the living is easy.” Well, maybe. Depending on your geographic location the
dog days of summer are now upon you. Summer wines are defined as light, crispy, and fruitful, and
generally lower in alcohol. How about a chardonnay
(shar–don-ay)? Many vineyard acres in California
dedicate their dirt to the chardonnay grape, and
for good reason. The grape is used not only for
chardonnay wine, but for California sparklers as well.
A few months ago I mentioned Susan Lueker and Megan Schofield of Simi Winery as being two of a
handful of female wine makers. That trend continues at Wild Horse where the director of winemaking
is Chrissy Whittmann. Bravo ladies! What do we look for when purchasing a chardonnay? A few
years back the term “buttery” was popular, then “oakey” took the stage. I look for how the chardonnay
tastes at room temperature, and since it is July, how does it do when chilled, and of course, the price.
The central coast, as represented by this Wild Horse chardonnay, passes on both fronts. You’ll get
more flavor from a below room temperature glass, but if you need to chill your wine the flavors of the
fruit are still prominent. My suggestion is this, if you are drinking it just below room temperature, go
with some summer fruit as a pairing -- watermelon, peaches, or a handful of cherries. You prefer it
cold? Then have it with a nice hot pizza or grilled shrimp. The price is right, and many stores offer
discounts for case purchases.
