“What’s Going On?”

News and Views from Joan Schmidt

JOIN US FOR A

THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY CELEBRATION

Invite friends and family to celebrate the Feast of Gratitude & Gravy.

This is a special weekend for families, singles, couples, and young adults.

ARCADIA IS BACK ON TRACK:

MICKEY SEGAL SWORN IN

Imagine sitting around a blazing fire in the fireplace
of the main lodge, surrounded by family and close
friends you didn’t even know you had. The aromas
of roasting turkey, fresh-baked apple pie, homemade
bread and hot apple cider fills the air, mingled with the
faint aromatic fragrance of oak smoke from the fire
place

This event can be thought of as “Hike in, EAT, hike
out.” However, there’s much more to Thanksgiving
than just eating: there is fellowship, the beautiful ascent
of the Santa Anita Canyon, probably a “talent show,” a
wicked ping-pong match, some work projects—all of
it sure to make you bang your cup on the table and
holler, “Can I have some more please?!”

Thanksgiving at Camp is, in many ways, like having
a holiday with a family of 40+. There is cooking to do
by many of the “family” members, there is clean-up by
others, some will go out and gather wood for the fire,
the kids play, the adults drink. So be ready for lots of
participation.

Here is the Big Picture:

November 25-26-27, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday +
* Wednesday drop your personal items at
Adams’ Pack Station by 7:30 am and then we
hike into Camp and start cooking for both
Wednesday dinner and Thanksgiving goodies.
* Thursday is more cooking, playing, working and
finally, the Feast mid-afternoon (4:00 pm). While
still in a gravy-induced daze, we entertain each
other Thursday evening while debating when to
eat the pies versus starting the talent show versus
lying down for a nap. All of these will be decided
on site by those still able to speak intelligibly.
* On Friday, there will general moaning about over-
eating, sneaking in for pie for breakfast, farewell to the
unfortunate few who must leave, continuation of the
ping-pong tournament, short hikes, bird-watching,
zip-line riding, etc. Or, (radical idea,) completely relax
and do nothing. It is so hard to do, but so worthwhile!

Thanksgiving is about sharing and caring for family
and friends. One special tradition at Thanksgiving
camp is the sharing of our talents and skills with
others. We call upon participants to lead a program or
offer a workshop in order to provide a wide variety of
activities throughout the weekend. Bring your talent
for the talent show. So, please start thinking about what
you can share with others to make this weekend even
more special. Do you have a good game or art project?
Would you like to lead a hike or yoga class? Can you
lead songs at a campfire? Let’s make this loads of fun.

Last Tuesday’s
Arcadia’s Council
Meeting: “A Breath
of Fresh Air”,
“Return to the Old
Guard”, or just
“Yeah” as former Mayor/ City Council Member
Mickey Segal was sworn in. Council Member
John Wuo had resigned amid allegations over his
endorsement of USFIA and Gemcoin besides his
ethics investigation by the Fair Political Practices
Commission begun in September. Segal will
finish out the term until the municipal election
in April.

This appointment of Segal was the first order
of business at the Meeting. An interesting aside
was a letter read from Dr. Sheng Chang, former
Mayor/Council Member who nominated himself
to finish Wuo’s term, but said he (Chang) would
seek reelection in the April election. (One of
the stipulations had been that whoever finished
Wuo’s term would NOT seek reelection in
April 2016.) However Mayor Pro tem Chandler
nominated Segal; it was seconded by Council
Member Beck and carried by a unanimous vote-
much to everyone’s relief.

After the swearing-in by City Clerk Gene
Glasco, Segal was congratulated and welcomed
back by City Staff, elected officials and residents
during a five-minute recess as seating was
rearranged. To say that Mickey Segal is most
qualified is the understatement of the year.
What he has done for the City is unmatched
and with his wife Lee have been an integral part
of the fundraising for the Methodist Hospital
Foundation-just to give one example.

In opening statements, Segal stated there were
two pressing issues-residential code issues and
the ballot initiative to repeal the Utility Users
Tax, which he is very against.

“I will do everything possible I can, in my
belief, to do what’s right for the community and
then I’ll be out of here, but I can promise you that
resolving these two issues will get my full time
and permanent commitment for the next six
months,” he told the audience.

 Council Member Tom Beck expressed
everyone’s feelings, “Starting last year… City
Council has done more to harm the image, the
reputation of Arcadia than any City Council in
Arcadia in the last 100 years…so many votes and
actions this City Council has taken…held us up
to ridicule…but it’s over…we’ve turned the page
with Mickey.”

Beck’s statements are very true. They have been
reiterated by Editorials in the Star News, by my
ophthalmologist, even at Santa Anita Park while
waiting for American Pharoah to return from the
East Coast!

A few major issues were FINALLY voted on.
After five months, the Council voted to resume
the residential zoning code update and to include
the Highlands Homeowners Association in a
citywide historic survey. The Council also voted
to reinstate a neighborhood impacts committee.
(This group of about twelve residents, developers,
real estate professionals and city staff will work
on zoning changes that all would like to see.)

There were many issues discussed. Please go
to the City of Arcadia website. Arcadia residents
may view their Council Meetings on Cable
television. However there is a link to see Council
Meetings on line.

Between Mickey Segal returning to office and
the upcoming Saturday “Arcadia Fusion” (Street
Fair with both American and Asian vendors)
beginning on November 7th, Arcadia’s future is
looking great!

BOARD APPROVES MANDATORY SPAY/NEUTER
AND MICROCHIPPING PROGRAM FOR CATS

LOS ANGELES COUNTY — On a motion by
Mayor Michael D. Antonovich, the Board of
Supervisors unanimously approved amending Title
10 of the Los Angeles County Code to require the
mandatory spaying or neutering and microchipping
of cats in unincorporated Los Angeles County.

“Focused on reducing the uncontrolled breeding
of cats that can turn into a severe public health
concern, this action will help identify the owners of
the nearly 29,000 cats that are impounded annually
and prevent them from being euthanized.” In Fiscal
Year 2014-2015, the Department impounded 28,911
cats of which 21,055 were euthanized. Moreover,
only 1.6 percent of cats turned in to animal care
centers were reunited with their owners.

Cat owners are encouraged to take advantage
of low-cost procedures offered by the County
Department of Animal Care and Control at
animalcare.lacounty.gov.

In addition, the Board approved a motion asking
for a 3 month pilot program with reduced adoption
fees. The Department of Animal Care and Control
will use data collected during the pilot program to
determine whether the reduced fees led to more
adoptions and whether a more formalized program
should be developed and implemented.

HALLOWEEN “TRUNK OR TREAT”

OFFERS SAFE FUN AT CHURCH

Youngsters costumed as ghosts, goblins, princesses,
pirates and other creatures of the night are invited
to Church of the Good Shepherd to seek their
Halloween treats. The annual “Trunk or Treat”
event will be held on Halloween night, Saturday,
Oct. 31. People will decorate their car trunks with
eerie lights, spooky sounds, and weird masks and
will line up in the church’s parking lot. “Trunk or
Treat” will be open from 6:30-8:00 p.m. and offer
tasty goodies to the kids. Community residents can
enjoy this safe and fun celebration of Halloween
in their family-friendly costumes. Church of the
Good Shepherd, United Methodist, is at 400 W.
Duarte Road, Arcadia.
