At the May 8 meeting of the Sierra Madre Civic Club, the Educational Awards Committee presented
the five exceptional 2025 Award recipients.

from their applications and essays. Students introduced their families and friends, spoke about
their plans for the future, and shared the reasons that receiving this Award was so meaningful to
them. All five of the honorees are Sierra Madre residents, and they said in individual ways that
their experiences growing up here will always be treasured and remembered fondly.

The Sierra Madre Civic Club has been fulfilling it’s purpose to promote unity and good fellowship
and to strive toward civic, philanthropic and youth welfare advancement in our community since
1944. Thanks to all of you for your continued support!

OVER 500 PARTICIPATE IN 4TH ANNUAL

KID-FIT FAMILY FUN RUN

S. El Monte, CA — The temperature was perfect and spirits were high on Saturday, May 17th, as
more than 500 runners, along with enthusiastic spectators and family members, gathered at Legg
Lake in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area for a community fitness celebration like no other.
Hosted by Duarte’s KID-FIT Preschool Health and Fitness Organization, this yearly event featured
both a 1K and 5K run designed to promote healthy habits for families and youth.

The course offered a picturesque setting, with participants winding their way around scenic trails
lined with clear lake water, local wildlife, and plenty of cheering supporters. From young children
to senior citizens, and even individuals with disabilities, the event drew people of all ages and
backgrounds—proving that fitness is truly for everyone.

Volunteers from Ice Bear Karate, a program of the Santa Anita YMCA in Monrovia, were on hand to
help keep the event running smoothly. Their dedication and energy helped make the day a success.

“This event is all about fun, fitness, and family,” said Michele Silence, founder and director of the
nonprofit KID-FIT organization. “It’s great to see so many school teams, youth groups, and entire
families participating together. That’s exactly what we aim for—creating positive, active memories
that last a lifetime.”

This year’s 5K race saw some incredible performances. Felipe Loera, 28, of El Monte took first place
overall with a time of 16:41. On the women’s side, 12-year-old Lake Fandell from Los Angeles wowed
the crowd by finishing in 19:55. The Eagle Rock Running Club earned top honors as fastest youth
team, taking home $500.

Individual youth cash prizes were awarded by age group, with $50 for M/F ages 3–6, $100 for
ages 7–10, $200 for ages 11–14, and $300 for ages 15–19. All were celebrated for their effort and
achievements.

While the 5K attracted experienced runners and competitive youth teams, the 1K race offered a
fun, action-packed course perfect for younger children and families. Each 1K participant received
a medal, a goody bag, and a commemorative T-shirt—ensuring that every child walked away with
a sense of accomplishment.

A festive atmosphere surrounded the day, with music, cheering, and a variety of raffle baskets
drawing plenty of interest. Prizes included massage gift certificates, fine wine, dining gift cards, and
tickets to local entertainment venues, adding an extra layer of excitement for everyone attending.

The success of the event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of local sponsors.
Main sponsors included BJ’s Restaurant, Rize Credit Union, San Gabriel Valley Water Company,
Assemblymember Blanca Rubio, Longo Toyota/Lexus/Penske, Action Designz, and Run With
Us. Additional support came from D’Aquino Italian Imports, Trader Joe’s, the Arcadia Chinese
Association, Craig’s Crew, and Smart and Final.

“This kind of community collaboration is what makes an event like this work,” added Silence. “It
brings people together with a shared mission—to live healthier and happier lives.”

With the event growing year after year, the KID-FIT Family Fun Run 5K continues to make a
lasting impact. The organization behind it, KID-FIT, has long been committed to building healthy
lifestyle habits in children and their families, focusing on prevention through fitness, education,
and fun.

As the runners crossed the finish line and families posed for photos, one thing was clear: the
KID-FIT 5K is much more than a race—it’s a celebration of community, health, and the power of
movement.
