EATON AND PALISADES AIR MONITORING UPDATE

 

DIAMOND BAR – The South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) continues its expanded air 
monitoring efforts in response to ongoing debris removal efforts near the Eaton and Palisades fire areas. Reported air 
monitoring data includes particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), air toxics (such as lead and arsenic), and asbestos in communities 
near the burn zones.

 

The public within and near the Eaton and Palisades burn areas is strongly encouraged to follow the safety precautions outlined 
by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to minimize the potential risk of exposure to ash, soot, and 
fire debris. Strong winds can carry ash and soot over a wider area, increasing the potential for exposure, so it is especially 
important to take extra care during weather fluctuations and windy conditions.

ASSEMBLYMEMBER HARABEDIAN 
SUPPORTS COMMISSIONER LARA’S 
FORMAL INVESTIGATION INTO STATE 
FARM’S WILDFIRE CLAIMS HANDLING

(SACRAMENTO, CA) - Assemblymember John Harabedian (D–
Pasadena) issued the following statement after Insurance Commissioner 
Ricardo Lara announced a formal Market Conduct Examination 
into State Farm’s handling of insurance claims related to the 
Palisades and Eaton wildfires:

“Following the Eaton Fire, our community deserves clear communication 
and fair treatment to facilitate a swift rebuilding process. I 
have received numerous complaints from neighbors regarding the 
claims process. A market conduct examination will provide the clarity 
we urgently need. I am grateful to Commissioner Lara for taking 
action to demand transparency and ensure that families receive 
the answers they deserve.” said Assemblymember John Harabedian 
(D-Pasadena)

According to Commissioner Lara, the Department has received 
troubling reports from survivors and advocacy groups, including the 
repeated reassignment of claims adjusters, inconsistent communication, 
and delays that have left families in limbo. These issues will be 
a key focus of the investigation, which is conducted under statutory 
authority and may take several months to complete.

While insurers are required by California law to pay claims fully, 
fairly, and promptly, recent cases have raised concerns about whether 
that standard is being met—especially when it comes to smoke damage 
and large-scale recovery challenges.

“The strongest evidence we can bring to bear is the voice of consumers 
themselves,” Commissioner Lara added. “I continue to urge any 
wildfire survivor experiencing delayed payments, claim disputes, 
multiple adjusters, smoke damage issues, or any other problems to 
file a formal complaint with my Department.” 

Complaints can be submitted at insurance.ca.gov or by calling 
800-927-HELP.

As the Department’s examination moves forward, Assemblymember 
Harabedian will be monitoring its progress and working with both 
local constituents and the Department throughout the process.

$25,000 REWARD EXTENDED FOR 
UNSOLVED PASADENA MURDER

 Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger introduced a 
motion to again extend a $25,000 reward for any details leading to the 
apprehension and conviction of those responsible for the killing of 
27-year-old Ernesto Jimenez in Pasadena.

 Jimenez was fatally shot while walking to Villa Park in the evening 
on Nov. 13, 2020. He was affectionately known as “Big Ernesto” in the 
community and enjoyed playing music often at Villa Park. Mr. Jimenez 
was widely known for his caring and warm nature. He was not a gang 
member and had no gang affiliations.

 “Nearly four years have gone by since Ernesto’s life violently ended as 
he was strolling to his neighborhood park,” Supervisor Kathryn Barger 
said. “I remain hopeful that this reward will prompt someone with 
information to come forward and provide investigators with a critical 
tip or bit of crucial information to finally help solve this case. Ernesto’s 
family and friends are heartbroken. They and the broader Pasadena 
community deserve answers, justice, and closure.” 

 “We are not going to let a coward violate the safety and security of our 
city,” Pasadena Mayor Victor M. Gordo said. “We owe it to the family 
to find the person(s) responsible. I thank Supervisor Barger for never 
forgetting our local families who deserve closure.”

ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING 
STATIONS NOW AVAILABLE AT UPPER 
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY MUNICIPAL 
WATER DISTRICT OFFICES IN

The Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District (USGVMW) 
has installed three new electric vehicle charging stations 
for public use at their headquarters in Monrovia (248 E Foothill 
Blvd.). The facilities include dual-port chargers for electric vehicles 
and plug-in hybrids.

The three 11kV chargers are on 100 percent green power from the 
Clean Power Alliance. Cost for charging is $0.55 per kWh. Those 
wishing to use USGVMW’s charging facilities will need to down-
load the Monta Charge app on their smartphone to access services 
and for payment.

Please note that the chargers are owned and maintained by USGVMW.
