“Architecture and DNA” is a series of photographs that examines the influence of a father’s work as
an architect on his daughter’s work as an artist.
Inspired by models of buildings and gardens that Cybele’s dad designed when she was a child, Cybele
started constructing her own buildings out of foam core – emphasizing the kind of spaces that fit her
personal life. Unlike her dad’s works that were designed to be used in the real world, her structures
were created as spaces of potential – architecture for her own personal/artistic narratives.
The garden and studio of the home Cybele grew up in were designed by her dad and, of all his work,
had the most immediate impact on her. For this series of photographs she projected images of their
garden and studio onto her own structures, creating a 3rd space – one that exposes the complexity
of influence and departure from a parent. Cybele holds an MFA from Hunter College in New York,
where she received the Tony Smith Award in her final year. She has recently shown at Krowswork
Gallery in Oakland and Artists Television Access Window Gallery in San francisco. Cybele will be an
artist in residence at the Bemis Center in Omaha this fall as well an affiliate artist at the Headlands
Center for the Arts in 2011.
Cybele’s father (the silent partner in this project) was founder of Cal Poly Pomona’s Lyle Center for
Regenerative Studies. Her mother, Harriett Lyle, is a prominent Sierra Madre civic leader.
When you hear that someone
managed to sell a home
without representation, it's
likely that the sale was to a
family member, close friend,
or a tenant who was already
renting and living there.
These exceptional cases are
not the norm, and there are
powerful reasons why it is so
difficult to make a sale "by
owner."
The biggest roadblock is
that For Sale By Owners
(FSBOs) aren't included in
the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) that licensed agents and organizations use. A sign in the yard
and an ad in the newspaper are no match for the widespread exposure gained from a listing visible
on the MLS.
Since the FSBO has no listing agreement providing for a sales commission, many agents won't show
these homes with no promise of compensation. Again, this greatly reduces the number of potential
buyers exposed to the offering, not to mention the fact that buyers who do express interest will not
have been screened by a professional to determine their qualifications.
Perhaps the most hazardous aspect of selling “by owner” is the potential for legal oversights and
complications. Real estate transactions are loaded withpotential liability for unrepresented and
unwitting sellers. One overlooked form or improper disclosure could generate an expensive lawsuit.
Just as you wouldn't enter the courtroom without an attorney, you shouldn't sell your home without
professional representation.
