Health Tips From Dr. John Talevich

FYI:

Home Safety Surprises
And Suggestions

by Elinor Ginzler

(NAPSI)-Any time of year can be the
right time to take a look around your
home and find ways to make it safer
for you and your family.

 For example, simple home
maintenance can avert a number of
potential problems. Cleaning lint
filters in the clothes dryer before
every load and cleaning the dryer
vent line each year can prevent dryer
fires. Shockingly, there are more than
15,000 dryer-related fires each year.

Placing a barbecue grill too close
to the house can be another way to
cook up accidents. It’s estimated
that 6,500 barbecue grill fires cause
as much as $27 million in property
losses each year.

Some injuries can be prevented by
just choosing a different tool for a
difficult task. Consider using a can
opener instead of a kitchen knife the
next time you open those frustrating
anti-theft plastic clamshell packages.
And did you know that a sharp knife
is safer than a dull knife? A dull
blade leads to slips.

AARP has compiled a list of 30
home safety facts and tips that shine
a light on the simple things that can
help make homes safer and more
user friendly.

Did you know that:

• 86,000 people fall each year
because of their pets?

• Power-mower injuries cause
80,000 hospital visits each year?

• Poison ivy is getting more potent
and harder to identify?

• More people are injured using
hand tools than power tools?

Many of these injuries can be
prevented with simple fixes that take
just moments but rarely make it to
our to-do lists.

Consider these small tasks:

• Moving the grill 10 feet from the
house or shrubs can help protect
you from a larger fire if the grill
tips or the fire flares.

• Feeding the cat before making
dinner can stop it from milling
around the kitchen when you’re
cooking. A baby gate can keep the
dog out of the kitchen altogether.

• Most mower injuries are caused
by stones or other things kicked
out by mower blades moving at
high speed. Clearing the yard of
debris before mowing can help.

• Can’t recognize poison ivy? The
oil that causes people to react to
poison ivy won’t penetrate long
sleeves and pants or vinyl work
gloves.

Recipe of the Week:

4th of July BBQ’d Cornish Hens

INGREDIENTS:

 3 cloves Garlic crushed

 1 tb Seasoned salt

 1/2 c Oil

 1c Fresh lemon juice

 12 tsp Italian Salad dressing

 1/2 c Chopped onions

 1 Pepper

 1 ts Crushed thyme

4 Rock Cornich Hens, giblets removed

DIRECTIONS:

Blend garlic, seasoned salt, oil, lemon
juice, dressing, onions, pepper, and
thyme. Marinate the birds overnight in the
refrigerator.

Cut the birds lengthwise.

Cook on outside grill, bone side down
10 minutes, flesh side down 5 minutes,
alternating 10 minutes and 5 minutes in
this manner for about an hour and basting
with marinade frequently (at least every 5
minutes) while barbequing.

Serves 8.

If you can’t get outside to barbecue, just
use the oven method:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Place skin side up in a shallow pan, baste
with marinade, cover with foil and roast for
30 minutes.

Remove foil and brush with marinade
again. Roast again uncovered for 20-30
minutes (brush with marinade again after
about 10 minutes).

Test for doneness: drumsticks should be
soft and juices should not be tinged with
pink when you pierce the thickest part of
the thigh with a fork.

In the last two articles, we have
discussed some basic considerations
regarding digestive health.   These are
1) simple foods, properly combined, to
reduce gastric distress and 2) elimination
of foods which may be inflammatory in
individual cases.   Also considered were
some time-tested herbal and supplemental
supports for improved digestion.   This
third installment is concerned with the
stomach bacterium, helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori has become a hot
topic in recent years due to research done
by two Australian doctors, Barry Marshall,
M.D. and Robin Warren, M.D.   Prior to
their discovery that ulcers are caused by
this organism, it was commonly believed
that anxiety and emotional stress were the
primary causes.   Most researchers felt that bacteria could not live in the acid environment
of the stomach.

For those suffering from long-standing gastric distress, it can be a relief to know what
might be causing the problem.   Once diagnosed, helicobacter can be eliminated by a visit to
a medical specialist familiar with the issue.   It should be mentioned that properly diagnosing
this bacterium can be tricky, but trained practitioners are able to effectively interpret results.

So, why is it important to know about this troublesome bug?   In many cases, people
suffer for years, spend thousands of dollars on medications, and have never been tested for
helicobacter.   It can be of great benefit to identify the presence of it and work to reduce its
influence on the body.

The vast majority of stomach and digestive problems are associated with lifestyle choices.

With appropriate modifications to diet and stress-management, even long-standing
inflammation can and will be repaired. Effective herbal and supplemental supports may
also assist the healing process and, in the case of deep-seated conditions, the newer research
can be beneficial.
