MILLENIALS FOR THE 21st CENTURY
WORKPLACE”

Guest Lecture Focuses on Preparing this Generation for
College & Careers

Pasadena, CA – The Pasadena Unified School District’s
(PUSD) invites parents, educators, community partners,
and the general public to Preparing Millennials for the 21st
Century Workplace, a free lecture about raising children
born after 1981, and how to prepare them to succeed in
college and in their careers.

Author and social marketing expert Richard Delano will
discuss the ways generations form unique and predictable
personalities in their youth, and how these define their
attitudes and behaviors at each stage of life.

He will focus on the “Millenials,” and the characteristics
that may surprise, intrigue, and inspire their parents
and teachers. He will also talk about the education that
Millenials want and need to prepare them for the 21st
century workplace.

Mr. Delano co-founded and is marketing director for
LifeCourse Associates with authors Bill Strauss and Neil
Howe (Generations, 13 Gen and 4th Turning). Mr. Delano
is working with PUSD as a Next Generation Learning
Community designated by the Ford Motor Company
Fund’s Advisory Council.

The lecture is sponsored by PUSD’s High Schools and
College and Careers Pathways Department, which prepares
all students for college and careers through programs such
as academies, career and technical education, and work

Jump-Starting Your Child's School Year Can
Be Child's Play

(NAPSI)-One proven way to get kids serious about learning is to make
it fun.

That's a lesson software makers have taken to heart-and they are creating
educational games that put young brains to work.

For example, a superpersonalized, wildly imaginative and really fun
game that also teaches math, science, reading and critical thinking skills
was created by JumpStart.com, the best-selling educational software
developer.

Built with 3-D technology, the game takes kids' online gaming to a whole
new level of engagement. The award-winning, adventure-based, 3-D
virtual world combines learning and fun to maximize engagement and
educational value.

While exploring a constantly changing animated world, game players
must accomplish missions that require them to practice essential age-
appropriate learning skills, including counting, colors and shape
recognition for pre-K and kindergarten, all the way through grammar,
vocabulary, math and science facts for older kids.

As kids learn to navigate in the "Virtual World" game, they build
confidence about trying new things.

The games are based on national educational standards-meaning the
skills that kids learn in the games will translate directly into success in
the classroom.

JumpStart.com has been described as a groundbreaking evolution in
children's learning games and the first learning game delivered in a
browser with high-quality 3-D graphics and advanced game play. Kids 3
to 10 can use the site to interact, explore and learn.

In the more than 19 years of its existence, the game company has acquired
about 30 million parents as fans. The company's Knowledge Adventure,
JumpStart and Math Blaster brands have earned over 500 awards.

Also, the game designers know that kids learn and play differently-that's
why there are different areas and games perfect for kids of all different
learning styles.

Fun with Sign Language
for Children at the
Library

An Introduction to ASL for
Hearing Children

Emmy-Lou Thomas-Smith, teacher
of “My Smart Hands” children’s
sign language classes, will share
her expertise with parents and
young children in an active and fun
program at the Sierra Madre Public
Library’s Preschool Storytimes on
Monday, August 16 at 10:00 a.m. and
Wednesday, August 18 at 7:00 p.m.

Ms. Thomas-Smith, a Sierra Madre
resident, is herself hard of hearing,
and teaches “My Smart Hands” and
“Sing & Sign” classes using American
Sign Language for hearing children.
Although most babies start talking
between 1 and 2 years of age, they
are able to understand and want to
communicate much earlier. Because
they have control over their hands
before they develop verbal skills,
signing helps them express what they
are not yet able to say, which has the
added benefit of reducing frustration
and temper tantrums.

Emmy-Lou explains, “Research shows
that babies who use sign tend to speak
and read sooner and have larger
vocabularies. Signing gives them a
bridge of meaningful communication
while they transition to speaking
language. Our mission is to bring
to parents, educators and children a
better understanding of the value of
visual communication early in life.”

In addition to the special presentation,
each storytime will also include the
regular program of stories, songs and
crafts.

The Sierra Madre Public Library is
located at 440 West Sierra Madre
Boulevard in Sierra Madre. For more
information please call (626) 355-
7186, or visit our website at www.
sierramadre.lib.ca.us. This program is
free and open to the public.

Do You Know a Teacher Who Deserves
Recognition?

The Ron Clark Academy is searching for nominations for the Great American Teacher
Awards, a national award to recognize America's most innovative and creative teachers.
Nominations and applications must be submitted by September 1, 2010.

Do you know a teacher who is changing students’ lives through outstanding work in
the classroom? The Ron Clark Academy, in partnership with Great American Financial
Resources, Inc., is searching for phenomenal teachers from across the country to participate
in the second annual Great American Teacher Awards. Ron Clark and Kim Bearden, who
are national award-winning educators themselves, are currently accepting applications for
this prestigious award to recognize those who are doing exceptional work to inspire their
students.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to recognize those teachers who are doing amazing
work inside their classrooms,” said Ron Clark, founder of the The Ron Clark Academy in
Atlanta. “We all remember that teacher who was filled with energy and excitement, that
teacher who was eager to help us learn. We are absolutely thrilled to launch this national
award. It’s our way of saying thank you to those who have committed their lives to children
and education.”

In order to apply, the nominee must be a passionate, dedicated teacher who is currently
employed by a public or private school, at any grade level or subject from pre-kindergarten
through grade 12, and who is planning to continue in an active teaching status. A minimum
of three years of current teaching experience is required.

The deadline to submit applications is September 1, 2010. Applications will be reviewed by
a selection committee, and semifinalists will receive a scheduled classroom visit by Ron
Clark or a member of the Ron Clark Academy staff. From these semifinalists, five teachers
will be selected as national finalists, and they will be honored at a special gala on Friday,
November 19th, 2010, which will serve as the kick-off event for the November National
Educators’ Conference. Each finalist will receive prizes and national recognition. The five
finalists will also be interviewed by Ron Clark and the Ron Clark Academy staff and a panel
of judges from across the country.

The five national finalists will receive the following: An all-expense paid trip to Atlanta for
the finalist and a guest to attend the Ron Clark Academy’s National Educators’ Conference
in November of 2010; special recognition at the National conference; classroom resources
and supplies; media opportunities; and a $1,000 honorarium.

After the five finalists have been selected, one teacher will be named the Great American
Teacher of the Year. In addition to the prizes listed above, this exceptional teacher will
receive a $10,000 cash award and a $5,000 cash gift to his/her school.

To nominate a teacher, to submit an application or to learn how to become a sponsor of the
2010 Great American Teacher Awards, visit www.greatamericanteacherawards.com.
