Sierra Madre, Ca.

HOT STUFF!

“We’re havin’ a heatwave, a tropical heatwave...” I was going to pose the
questions as to who sang it first, who made it more famous the second
time, in what movies, and who wrote it, but all you have to do these days
is look it up on the internet - way too easy! For those of you who do, check
out the lyrics - pretty racy stuff for 1938 and even 1954! I’m not gonna
give away the answers though... you never know when QuizMistress
Deanna might want to use ‘em in her Tuesday Night Trivia at Cafe 322!
I suggest you do your homework. Trivia Night details below and photo
of the hostess attached. You can also see her perform with the Mellow
Dz, Mercy & the Merkettes and New Astroturf.

Sierra Madre Library to Take Part in
“Snapshot”

A Day in the Life of California Libraries

On Monday, October 4, The Sierra Madre Public Library is joining
libraries across the state in participating in “Snapshot: One Day in
the Life of California Libraries,” to show how important academic,
public, school, and special libraries and library systems are to the
state of California. This Snapshot Day has been developed by the
California Library Association (CLA).

The Library will compile statistics, customer comments,
photographs, and other data chronicling a typical library day. The
results collected will be added to those of other libraries across
California, by CLA, to show how libraries provide invaluable
services to California citizens.

Toni Buckner, Sierra Madre Public Library Director, reflecting on
the importance of libraries in the life of the community, stated,
“Our libraries provide irreplaceable and unique services to our
communities, especially in these stressed economic times. Library
usage is rising throughout California, and the demand is growing
for books and other resources. As library services nationwide are
being curtailed, access to a wide variety of educational programs
and databases, as well as free computer and Internet use in our
public libraries has proven invaluable, especially to job seekers
and students. We hope that this “snapshot” of a day in the life of
California libraries will reinforce in the minds of decision makers
the critical need for their ongoing support of library resources
and services.”

What has the Sierra Madre Library meant to you? We invite you
to drop by any time between 12:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. on October 4,
and share how libraries in general, and the Sierra Madre Library
in particular, have impacted and made a positive difference in
your life. Haven’t been to our—or any—library in a while? You
might be surprised to learn that the library isn’t “just about books”
anymore. Let our friendly staff give you a tour and explain the
many valuable free services available to you.

For more information on this event, please call 626-355-7186,
or visit either the Library’s website at www.sierramadre.lib.ca.us,
or the CLA website at www.cla-net.org. The Sierra Madre Public
Library is located at 440 West Sierra Madre Boulevard in Sierra
Madre.

The Sierra Madre Public Library
is pleased to present Broadway
and film veteran Duffy Hudson
performing as Edgar Allan Poe
in a solo show, “The
Shadow of the Raven.”
The performance,
which is free and open
to the public, will take
place at the Library on
Thursday, October 14,
at 7:00 p.m.

 Poe wrote some
of the darkest and
most chilling tales in
American literature,
and was himself an
enigma. To this day,
even the circumstances surrounding
his own death remain a mystery. In
this unique play, Poe rises from
the dead and looks back at his life
through the lens of some of his most
famous works.

 Duffy Hudson is an accomplished
actor, director, scriptwriter and
filmmaker, having performed on
Broadway and off-Broadway for
more than fourteen years.
He has acted in several
feature films and directed
more than 300 theatrical
productions. His film
company, Cinncinatus
Motion Picture, recently
completed a feature film,
Tattered Angel, starring
Lynda Carter.

 Middle and High School
students may be able to obtain
extra English or Theater class
credit for attending this event.

Interested students should check with
their teachers before the program date to
ensure that credit will be given. A proof
of attendance form, to be filled out by the
student and signed by Library staff, will be
available following the performance.
