With Bobby Eldridge
Alverno X Country Runners Medal at Bell-Jeff
Griffith Park Invitational By Lara L. Larramendi

Alverno High School Cross Country Team
concluded its tune up competitions with
four runners, two varsity and two junior
varsity, capturing medals at the 37th Annual
Bell-Jeff Griffith Park Cross Country
Invitational held Saturday, September 25th
at Griffith Park.

Varsity runners Eryn Blakely and Audrey
Davy improved their race times and finish
over their 2009 performance. Blakely, a
sophomore placed 4th clocking in at 21:20
and Davy, a senior, in 19th place with a time
of 23.27. Only 106 runners had their times
officially recorded in this race, even though
there were more entries.

Francesca Rueda, a freshman, and Sahhara
Assafiri, senior, earned medals in the junior
varsity race. Rueda posted a time of 30:11
and Assafiri came in at 31:31. In this race
there were more entries than the 62 runners’
time that were officially recorded.

More than 3,000 runners representing over
80 schools, some from as far away as Santa
Maria and Mammoth Lakes, participated
in this year’s 37th Annual Bellarmine/
Griffith Park Cross Country Invitiational.
Bellarmine/Griffith Park or Bell-Jeff Griffith
Park, by whichever name you want to call it,
everyone agreed that it was hot and dusty,
hot and dusty. Temperatures at 11:17 am
race time for the Blue Division Varsity Girls
and 12:23 pm for the Junior Varsity hovered
in the triple digits. The high temperatures
made the rugged 3-mile course of hills, dirt,
soft sand and grassy surfaces even more
challenging for the runners.

All of the Jaguar runners that ran completed
their race. Competing for the varsity team
were Miranda Akkari, Eryn Blakely, Audrey
Davy, Ashley Haylett, Kelly Janzen, Jessica
Lopez and Adrianna Martinez. Junior
varsity runners were Sahhara Assafiri,
Holly Coates, Bella Daniels-Campos, Madi
Daniels-Campos, Reagan Dowd, Victoria
Pintado, Nicolette Rodriguez and Francesca
Rueda.

Alverno begins their quest for a Horizon
League cross-country championship on
Wednesday, September 29th at 4pm against
Holy Family at the Rose Bowl. After
competing in two tough invitationals and
finishing better than some of their League
rivals (Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto,
Holy Family, Sacred Heart of Jesus and
San Gabriel Mission), Alverno’s runners
are very motivated to win their League
championship crown.

Alverno High School is the independent,
Catholic, college-prep high school for girls
in Sierra Madre, celebrating 50 years of
empowering exceptional women. Its college-
prep curriculum, leadership program, arts and
sports attracts students from public and private
schools throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

IS PUTTING ABOUT
DISTANCE OR DIRECTION?

Here is a 10 million dollar question! Is great putting a result of
distance control or accuracy? I have asked at least 10,000 amateur
golfers why they think they 3-putt, is it because of distance or
direction? 99% of the time they say it is direction. I am convinced
that it is distance control.

 OR, lack of.

Let me explain why I went off on a tangent in the first paragraph.
If you want to lower your handicap and become a great putter,
you HAVE to start focusing on touch. Now comes the next 10
million dollar question. Are some of us born with touch or do you
have to work for it?

The minute you approach a great putter (you always can find them
on the putting green), they will tell you they have worked hard to
become a great putter. On the other hand when you approach
someone that doesn’t putt well (they are usually pounding
drivers), they will tell you that all great putters are born.

You have to have a tiny bit of humor when you talk about putting,
if not...Here is the really cool thing about developing great touch
on the putting green. You DON’T have to make every putt you
look at. By the way, nobody else does, not even the greatest of
them all-made them all.

Read the next sentence a couple of times. The average tour player,
playing on the best greens, with the best equipment, only makes
50% of their 6-footers and 25% of their 10 footers. That is wild. I
know you think they make more putts than that but they don’t.
However; they only 3-putt from inside 30 feet---1% of the time.
DO YOU GET IT???

They HARDILY EVER 3-putt. They have developed great touch
on the greens.

Golfingly yours, Bobby Eldridge www.igolffixes.com

Bobby’s weekly pearl: If you want to make a change with your
putting, spend the time on the green and not on the practice tee.

Action-packed 25th Annual Industry Hills
Pro Rodeo for Children in Need, Oct. 9 & 10

Golf Tournament, Clinic
& Exhibition to Benefit
Junior Golfers

The First Tee of Pasadena will hold its
annual Invitational Golf Tournament,
Junior Clinic and Golf Exhibition on
Tuesday October 5, 2010 to benefit
youth participants of The First Tee
of Pasadena. The public is invited to
attend the free Junior Clinic and Golf
Exhibition, followed by a reception
and silent auction, beginning at 5pm at
Brookside Golf Club.

The theme of this year’s Junior Clinic
and Golf Exhibition is Friends of The
First Tee. PGA Tour golf professional
James Oh (http://www.pgatour.com/
players/02/63/71/) and former Stanford
Women’s golfer Angela Rho ( http://
www.gostanford.com/sports/w-golf/
mtt/rho_angela00.html ) will be
hosting the clinic and exhibition. James
and Angela have been friends since
they were both 9 years old, met due to
golf and will share their experiences
as junior, high school, college and, for
James, professional golfers.

The First Tee of Pasadena’s programs
are directed toward youth ages 5
to 17, with a specific target for 5th
through 8th graders. Since 2007, The
First Tee of Pasadena has also offered
our “Mulligan” programming to over
123 special challenged youths from
Optimist Youth Home, Pasadena
PAL, Rose City High School and
Five Acres. Since 2008, we have also
worked with the Pasadena Parks &
Recreation Department in providing
introduction programs in a non-golf
setting and in 2009 implemented the
National Schools Program into 10
PUSD elementary schools. The First
Tee’s core programs cost $25 per 8
week session; however scholarships
are available so that no youth is turned
away due to economic circumstance.

Tee of Pasadena and its many programs,

demand, (trick rope artist)
Tomas Garcilazo of Mexico
City, introduced at an early
age to his family heritage and
tradition of “La Charreria,”
a skill performed by generations through the
Mexican Charro. Garcilazo has devoted his life
to sharing Mexico’s National Sport La Charreria

been performing off and on since he was five,
sometimes preferring to play with his toys off to

in the San Gabriel Valley who are mentally
challenged, physically handicapped or come
from disadvantaged or abusive homes. Since its
inception in 1985, the Gabriel Foundation has
contributed more than $1.7 million to various
charities dealing with disadvantaged youth.

The Industry Hills Pro Rodeo is the Foundation’s
annual fundraiser and over $84,000 was donated
last year with proceeds from the 2009 Rodeo.
