Library Offers Introductory Class

On Tuesday, January 18 at 10:00 a.m., Polly Bonnett and 
Jill Schofield will present, “The SKYPE’S the Limit,” at the 
Sierra Madre Public Library, 440 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., 
Sierra Madre.

SKYPE is an Internet phone service offering free calling, 
texting and video chatting from desktop computers, laptops 
and mobile devices. If the high cost of calling family and

Free on-air publicity for local events

Sierra Madre’s new community radio station is now accepting 
scripts for Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about 
community events. PSAs will be broadcast on the air at no 
charge. The station operates 24/7 and can be heard at 1630 on 
the AM dial.

Any local non-profit or non-commercial organization can have 
their event information broadcast to the public on Sierra Madre 
Community Information Radio. This new radio station covers 
the city of Sierra Madre, plus surrounding areas of Pasadena, 
Arcadia, and Monrovia. 

In a nutshell, your event must:

• Benefit a non-commercial or non-profit entity

• Be open to the public

• Be of general interest to local citizens

Just 
write a Public Service Announcement that describes your 
event and e-mail it to radio@cityofsierramadre.com. 


Older “Sierra Madre” 

American of the Year

 The Senior Community Commission is now accepting nominations 
for the Older “Sierra Madre” American of the Year. If 
you know someone living in Sierra Madre who has demonstrated 
outstanding community service and is 60 years of age or 
older, please contact the Senior Services Desk at (626) 355-7394 
for a nomination form.

 Nominations are due to the Community & Personnel Services 
Department, 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., by Monday, February 
28, 2011. The Senior Community Commission will discuss 
nominees at its Study Session on March 3, 2011 and announce 
the honoree at their regular scheduled meeting also on March 3 
at 3 pm in the City Council Chambers. The honoree will also be 
recognized at a special reception held in their honor on Friday, 
May 13th at the Sierra Madre Hart Park House.

BRETT PERKINS IN CONCERT 
ON JANUARY 30 AT SIERRA 
MADRE PLAYHOUSE; ALSO, 
MUSICAL GUESTS

 Brett Perkins, a singer-songwriter whose brand of 
pop/folk has won him an international following, will perform 
in concert for one night only at Sierra Madre Playhouse 
on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 7 p.m.

 Appearing on the same bill will be musical guests, 
which include some of the finest singer-songwriters from 
Southern California, as well as musical friends from Europe.

 Perkins began his musical career over 20 years ago, 
and was lead vocalist for The Sneaks as well as a featured 
dancer on Soul Train before settling into a solo career as 
a singer-songwriter. At one point, in the 90s, he was CEO 
of the National Academy of Songwriters. Over the years, 
he’s worked with legendary musical figures like Burt Bacharach, 
Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills and Jackson 
Browne.

 An American, Perkins has for several years made his 
home in Copenhagen, where he presents the annual Copenhagen 
Songwriters Festival. He performs internationally. 
His mellow, soothing brand of pop has intergenerational 
appeal. 

 Brett returns to the Sierra Madre Playhouse following 
a successful date there last winter.

AT THE LIBRARY

Sierra Madre Public Library between Monday, January 10 and 
Saturday, January 22. The Friends received a large donation of 
books by popular mystery authors, which will be on sale for $1.00 
each. This is an ideal opportunity to try out a new author or fill 
in a gap in your personal collection. In addition to Mysteries, 
there will also be a wonderful selection of Fiction, Time Warner, 
Children’s and Specialty books, also only $1.00 each. Drop by 
often—there will plenty of new titles to choose from, as books 
are replenished daily.

Pasadena’s First United Methodist Church presents:

“Religion and Science”

On January 23rd, The First United Methodist Church of Pasadena 
SpiritSeekers begins a series entitled " Religion and Science" 
facilitated by Tom Prince. Tom Prince is a professor of Physics 
at Caltech and a Senior Research Scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion 
Laboratory (JPL). His research interests include black 
holes, neutron stars, and the early universe. Between 2001 and 
2006, Tom was the Chief Scientist at JPL, responsible for internal 
research and development. He is currently the Director of the 
Keck Institute for Space Studies at Caltech. 

Is there a dichotomy between religion and science ? What are 
the limits of religion and science ? What does the universe tell 
us about God ? These questions and others will be explored 
during this series. The class is open to all. It begins at 9:00 am 
Sunday mornings in the church lounge off Green Street. First

Civic Club Offers Education Awards

 Sierra Madre Civic Club will again provide its annual Education 
Awards to worthy Sierra Madre High School seniors graduating 
in 2011. Monetary awards and individual certificates will be presented 
to those chosen at the club’s May 12th meeting, 7:30 p.m., 
held in Memorial Park Hart Senior Center.

 Applications for the award are available at local high schools, 
Sierra Madre Public Library, City Hall, Youth Activity Center 
(YAC), also by contacting Education Awards Committee Chair 
Leslee Hinton or by emailing smcceducation2011@hotmail.com 
or by phone (626) 355-5595.

 A personal essay is required and must be typed or printed legibly. 
Also, a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s community 
service supervisor with significant knowledge of his or 
her experience and involvement.

 The deadline for applications to be received is March 1, 2011. 
Those postmarked after that date or those that are incomplete 
will not be considered.
