La Salle Senior, Andrew Barmann, Signs to Swim for UCSB
PASADENA, CA - La Salle High School’s
Andrew Barmann signed a letter of intent to
attend The University of California at Santa
Barbara on a full athletic scholarship for
swimming.
Barmann has led the Lancers to the CIF-
SS Division VI championship last season
and hopes to take the Lancers there again
this May. Andrew was heavily recruited by
The US Naval Academy, Columbia, Amherst
and the University of Massachusetts, but
choose the University of California at Santa
Barbara after a meeting with the coaches and
taking a tour of the campus.
“UCSB was particularly appealing because
I could stay on the west coast and since
UCSB will be a swimming team member of
the Pac 12 next year, the competition will be
excellent,” he said.
After starting his competitive career at age
seven in Pasadena, Andrew joined the San
Marino Tsunamis club swim team in the fall
of 2003 at age ten and, under the coaching
of Gyongyver Sovago, developed into an excellent
breaststroker. In 2005, Andrew set
the Crest League record for 11-12 boys in
the 50 yard breaststroke. In 2006, Andrew
joined the Swim Pasadena club and, under
the coaching of Sheri and Terry Stoddard,
competed at the 2008 and 2009 USA Swimming
Short Course Junior National Championships
and at the 2009 and 2010 Summer
Junior National Championships. In 2010, he
was a member of the Swim Pasadena men’s
800 meter freestyle relay at the USA Swimming
National Championships.
Andrew immediately made an impact
on the La Salle swim team as a freshman in
2008. He broke the school record in the 100
yard breaststroke (1:02:50) the first time he
swam the event in high school competition.
Andrew broke the school record in the 500
yard freestyle as a sophomore, and set a new
record (4:34.90) as a junior. The three-time
Del Rey League MVP and two-time Pasadena
Star-News All Area First Team member
is also a two-time CIF champion (500
yard freestyle). He was an Academic All-
American in 2009 and selected an Athletic
All-American in 2010.
“La Salle has been great. Even though it
has almost 800 students, it’s a place were everyone
knows each other. Everyone is very
welcoming and it’s all inclusive,” Andrew
said. Besides being a three-year letterman,
Andrew has a 3.5 GPA and is a member of the
National Honor Society, California Scholarship
Federation, Phi Alpha Chi service
group and is a La Salle Student Ambassador.
After this season with the Lancers, Andrew
will continue training for the Olympic
Trials and 2012 Olympics in London while
competing with the UCSB swim team.

Oranges and Grapefruits
Raise Funds For Nursery School
It’s here again... with the new
year comes our annual fundraiser
for Leland’s school:
Altadena Nursery School’s
Annual Orange and Grapefruit
sale!! As you may remember
from last year, we
are selling cases of California
navel oranges and Arizona
ruby grapefruit to raise funds for Leland’s co-op preschool
(which we adore!!). We were so pleased last year to receive
our cases: they exceeded our expectations and were so
sweet and delicious.
The cases can be bought full, or in half or quarter sizes. We
found last year that a full case of oranges was great for our
family of four (they will last up to six weeks if kept in a cool
dry place). The oranges are $27.00 for a full case, $18.00 for
a half case and $12.00 for a quarter case, and the grapefruit
are $21.00 for a full case, $15.00 for a half case and $10.00
for a quarter case. If you turn your nose to citrus, or already
have an orange tree in the back yard, you still have opportunities
to help!
You can buy a case that will be donated to a local food
bank, or make a cash donation to the school. 20% of citrus
purchased or donated to a food bank is tax deductible,
and 100% of donations made directly to the school are tax
deductible. You can email or call us to place your order,
or visit the schools website, www.ansoranges.com, to buy
them online (just be sure to select our family name, White,
during checkout). The oranges and grapefruit will be delivered
to your door between January 29th and February 6th.

Inspiring Children To Become Lifelong Readers
(NAPS)—Encouraging your children to read can help them
succeed.
According to the National Institute for Literacy, success in
school and life starts with learning to read. When children
become good readers in early grades, they are more likely to
become better learners throughout
their school years and beyond.
However, results from the
National Assessment of Educational
Progress reading test
found that 37 percent of American
fourth graders read below
the “basic” level.
According to a Kaiser Family
Foundation study, the media
landscape is changing rapidly.
Kids ages 8–18 are now spending
an average of more than 7
hours, 30 minutes per day with
media. While parental involvement
is critical, it ultimately
comes down to inspiring the
individual child not only to read books, but to find their own
passion about reading in all forms. Reading can include printed
media as well as online newspapers, magazines, blogs, games
and anything on a phone.
Here are a few tips to help get your kids reading:
• Find authors your child likes to build connections and
excitement about reading.
• Choose all kinds of books, such as nonfiction, fiction
and certain themes. It exposes them to various kinds of literature
and also helps them determine their personal preference.
• Suggest books that build on personal experiences such
as friendship, family, trips, pets or sports.
• Find the book award winners at your school library or
public library.
• Suggest that your child visit sites such as www.read.gov,
where children can discover, learn and experience the joys of
reading.
The Lifelong Literacy campaign is a public-service advertising
campaign (PSA) launched by the Ad Council and the Library
of Congress. New PSAs, aimed to reach children in the fourth,
fifth and sixth grades and their parents, focus on engaging children
in all forms of literacy. The objective is to inspire a lifelong
love of reading and encourage kids to explore their imaginations.
The TV, online and outdoor PSAs feature characters and
scenes from Disney’s new film “Tangled.”
