Grand Opening Dana gym
Fourteen months after ground was officially broken on construction
of what was then called the Joint-Use Gymnasium Project, a
grand opening ceremony was held Tuesday afternoon for what is
now called the Dana Gym on the northeast corner of the property
at Dana Middle School, 1401 S. First Ave.
Officials from the City of Arcadia, Arcadia Unified School District,
police and fire departments, Chamber of Commerce, students,
and many others filled the bleachers to capacity in the 8,700
square-foot building that represents the first and only gymnasium
operated by the school or the city other than those at the high
school.
With the City and school district contributing an equal share,
Dana Middle School and the school district will get priority use of
the facility during school hours (weekdays from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.),
while the City’s Recreation and Community Services under director
Sara Somogyi will oversee scheduling of activities on weeknights
(5 p.m. – 10 p.m.), weekends, and summertime.
Sign-ups began last month for an adult men’s winter basketball
league set to start Jan. 23.
The City is also offering winter classes for adults 50 years of age
and older in yoga, strength training, line dancing, tai chi, zumba
gold and aerobics. Registration is open now for classes at the new
gym and the Community Center, 365 Campus Drive, by calling Arcadia
Senior Services at 574.5130 or signing in at www.ci.arcadia.
ca.us.
The gymnasium features telescopic bleachers, a full-size basketball
court, two cross courts, a home/visitor electronic scoreboard,
office space, restrooms and an outdoor asphalt basketball court on
the west side of the building.
While it was Mayor John Wuo and School Board president Cung
T. Nguyen who were the point people at the time of the groundbreaking,
it was current school board president Lori Phillipi and
Mayor Peter Amundson who officiated on Tuesday. Both praised
the cooperation of the two entities, with Mayor Amundson noting
that the building was not only only opening on schedule but came
in significantly under the initial $3 million budget.
The initial plan was for the City and School District to each contribute
25% to create a combined matching of 50% from the state,
which agreed to approve a grant of up to $1.5 million for the gym.
But construction bids came in under budget at about $2.8 mil.,
potentially allowing a lower contribution of about $650,000 each
from the City and Arcadia Unified School District, the latter acting
as the primary agency for the project.

Arcadia Police Blotter
For the period of Sunday, January 2, through
Saturday, January 8, the Police Department responded
to 907 calls for service of which 129 required
formal investigations. The following is a
summary report of the major incidents handled by
the Department during this period.
Sunday, January 2:
1. Shortly before 3:00 a.m., a traffic stop was
conducted at Genoa and Santa Anita when a car
was seen swerving in the roadway. An intoxicated
24-year-old male Hispanic driver was arrested
for DUI.
2. Two auto burglaries were reported at the 24
Hour Fitness parking structure located at 125
North First. Unknown suspect(s) smashed car
windows and stole a wallet from one vehicle between
8:00 a.m. and 9:09 a.m., and took a purse
from another vehicle between 10:30 a.m. and
1:00 p.m.
Monday, January 3:
3. Around 1:13 p.m., units responded to 1201
South Baldwin regarding a disturbance between
two motorists. The victim was sitting in his parked
vehicle talking on his cell phone when a motorist,
possibly looking for a parking spot, stopped behind
the victim’s vehicle and began honking. The
suspect finally drove away but returned a short
time later. The victim made a finger gesture, and
this angered the suspect who then exited his vehicle
and kicked the victim’s car door. A private
person’s arrest was made, and a 39-year-old male
Asian was taken into custody for vandalism.
4. Two private persons’ arrests were made at the
Hollister store located at Westfield Mall around
4:11 p.m. A 15-year-old male Vietnamese and a
16-year-old male Hispanic removed sensor tags
from shirts and left the store without making
payment. They were arrested for petty theft and
were later cited and released.
Tuesday, January 4:
5. Around 5:16 a.m., units were dispatched
to Westfield Mall regarding a suspicious subject
who was possibly intoxicated. The man was located
but he refused to cooperate with officers’
commands and physically resisted. The 24-year-
old Asian was taken to the ground, handcuffed,
and arrested for obstructing/resisting.
6. A residential burglary occurred in the 800
block of West Huntington between 10:45 a.m.
and 1:15 p.m. Unknown suspect(s) entered the
home by unknown means, ransacked rooms, and
stole jewelry.
Wednesday, January 5:
7. Officers responded to Bare Escentuals located
at Westfield Mall around 7:56 p.m. in reference
to a battery and robbery incident. During
an argument, the ex-boyfriend pushed the victim
against a wall and grabbed her cell phone from
her hand. An area search for the 23-year-old Hispanic
was conducted, but he was not located.
8. Shortly before 8:00 p.m., units were dispatched
to REI regarding a grand theft. Around
4:30 p.m. a male suspect purchased three bike
computers and paid cash for the items. Six minutes
later, he re-entered the store and wanted to
return the items for a full refund; however, he
claimed to have lost his receipt within that brief
period. The cashier gave him the refund since
he had just purchased the items. Believing this
is suspicious, the store manager sent an email to
other REI stores regarding the suspect. She was
later notified that the same suspect had tried to
return several bike computers at the Santa Monica
location by using the receipt that was generated
from the Arcadia store. The manager conducted
an inventory search and discovered about
$967 in bike computers were stolen. The suspect
was subsequently arrested by Santa Monica PD.
Thursday, January 6:
9. Between 9:00 a.m. on January 5 and 11:45
a.m. on January 6, an auto burglary occurred in
the 1000 block of Fairview. Unknown suspect(s)
pried open a car window in order to unlock the
doors. The suspect(s) then stole four tires and
rims for a loss of about $1,050.
10. APD officers assisted a regional task force
in the arrest of seven men in Monrovia for possession
of several hundred pounds of marijuana.
Friday, January 7:
11. Around 2:35 p.m., a victim came to the station
to file a fraud report. Unknown suspect(s)
obtained the victim’s debit card information by
unknown means and made six fraudulent charges
totaling $1400.
12. Units responded to the intersection of Santa
Anita and Live Oak around 3:34 p.m. in reference
to a driver of a white van causing a disturbance
with other motorists. When officers located the
van and tried the conduct a traffic stop at Mayflower
and Larkfield, the suspect driver fled the
scene. A pursuit ensued; however, due to traffic
conditions and speed, the pursuit was terminated.
Saturday, January 8:
13. Shortly after 6:30 p.m., officers were dispatched
to the 1700 block of South Baldwin regarding
a suspicious circumstance report. The
victim advised that he purchased a cell phone
on Craigslist and later discovered that the phone
was reported as lost or stolen. The suspect is a
16-year-old male Asian.
14. Loss prevention personnel from Macy’s advised
that they had detained a woman for theft
around 8:40 a.m. The suspect was seen concealing
merchandise in her purse while in a fitting
room and left the store without paying for the
items. A private person’s arrest was made, and
the 26-year-old suspect was taken into custody
for petty theft and $255 in merchandise was
recovered.
