WELLNESS IN THE PARK
A Senior Information & Health Screen Fair will be hosted
by the Sierra Madre Community & Personnel Services
Department and Sierra Madre Senior Community
Commission, St. Rita Senior Ministry, and be.royal oaks
retirement community. The event takes place on Saturday,
September 24th in Memorial Park. The Kiwanis Pancake
Breakfast will run concurrently from 7am to 11am, $5.00 per
participant. At 9am to 12pm, the FREE Health Screenings
for Seniors, which include osteoporosis, hearing, body fat,
dental, FREE flu shots (for those whose primary insurance is
Medicare, all others $25), healthy eating & downsizing tips,
and so much more...

your neighbors for a morning filled with valuable information.

FALL AQUATICS PROGRAMS
Season passes for the Fall Lap Swim Program are now on
sale! This is a great opportunity for low impact exercise in a
heated outdoor pool. A minimum of 50 fall season passes
must be sold by Friday, September 16 for the program to
continue. Registration may be done online at www.cityofsierramadre.
com/onlineregistration or at the Community
Services Office at 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd. During the fall
season, there will be no daily admissions; however, this year
the fall pass will also grant swimmers access to water aerobics

Water Aerobics
Sierra Madre Aquatic Center is continuing water aerobics
into the fall season! The benefits of water exercise include
low impact, resistance, and cardiovascular training in a
fun environment. Water Aerobics can be taken by people
of all ages, and is especially beneficial for those seeking a
low to no impact workout. Exercising in water also reduces
overheating from continuous training and since we conduct
the class in the shallow end you do not need to be a strong

Bargain Book Table Sale
A windfall of wonderful donations has prompted the Friends of
the Sierra Madre Library to share the bounty at yet another Bargain
Book Table Sale. The next one is coming right on the heels of
the late August sale, and will be held from Tuesday, September 6,
through Saturday, September 10, during the Library’s open hours.
Fiction, Mysteries, Current Affairs, Young Adult and Children’s
Books will be the featured topics. The table is replenished daily,
and books are always $1.00 each.
We welcome books and DVD donations in good condition.
Magazines may be placed on the “Free Bench” at the back of the
Library, or, if the issues have been published within the last 6
months, they can be brought to the Service Desk for the Library’s
magazine takeaway section. Please call the number below if you
would like directions to the Library or more information on the
donation guidelines.
The Sierra Madre Public Library, located at 440 West Sierra Madre
Boulevard in Sierra Madre, is open Monday through Wednesday
from Noon to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday from Noon to 6 p.m.,

Farmer’s Market Is Back!
New Location
The Sierra Madre Farmer’s Market new location is in
Downtown Sierra Madre on Hermosa Avenue, south
of Sierra Madre Boulevard to Mariposa Avenue. The
hours will be from 3:00-8:00 p.m. during the summer
with the exception of major holidays. During the winter/
Pacific Standard time the market could possibly
end at 7:00 p.m.

Free on-air publicity for local events
Sierra Madre’s new community radio station is now accepting scripts
for Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about community events.
PSAs will be broadcast on the air at no charge. The station operates
24/7 and can be heard at 1630 on the AM dial.
Any local non-profit or non-commercial organization can have
their event information broadcast to the public on Sierra Madre
Community Information Radio. This new radio station covers the city
of Sierra Madre, plus surrounding areas of Pasadena, Arcadia, and
Monrovia.
In a nutshell, your event must:
• Benefit a non-commercial or non-profit entity
• Be open to the public
• Be of general interest to local citizens

write a Public Service Announcement that describes your

CELEBRATING WOMEN’S
EQUALITY DAY AUGUST 28
What better way than a scoop of ice cream with a
little fudge sauce on top to savor women’s right to vote? To
celebrate the momentous day 91 years ago when women
gained full participation in democracy with the
passage of the 19th amendment, the League of Women Voters
Pasadena Area is throwing an ice cream social for the
whole family on Sunday, Aug. 28, 4:00-5:30 p.m., at the historic
Hillmont House, 939 N. Hill Ave.,
Pasadena.
Ragtime music by Dad’s Band Plus One, games and
activities for children and plenty of Carmela’s ice cream on
the lawn of a Victorian landmark promise and old-fashioned
good time. Children under 13 are free. Everyone else
pays only $5.

SIERRA MADRE CONCERT IN
THE PARK SERIES
Join the City of Sierra Madre this summer for the FREE Concerts
in the Park Series which begin Sunday, July 10, 2011 and occurs
every Sunday through August 28, 2011.
August 28 – The Silver Beatles (Beatles Tribute Band) hosted
by the Community and Personnel Services Department.
The eight concerts are held from 6:00 pm and run through 8:00pm.
All concerts will be held at the Memorial Park Bandshell, 222 W.
Sierra Madre Blvd. next to City Hall. Seating is on the green so remember
to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Alcohol is prohibited.
Spectators are encouraged to support local organizations that may
provide refreshments.
